Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Shinoa Hiragi

The second summer.

Six months until the apocalypse.

This Christmas, the monsters of the Revelation, the Hyakuya Sect's virus, and the Vampire invasion will all arrive.

Luke was idling at home.

He had been expelled from school for beating someone so badly they suffered upper body fractures and lower body paralysis.

Although the other party had started the trouble.

But Luke didn't have a single scratch on him and caused such severe consequences, so he was expelled.

The other party seemed to be a distant relative of the Goshi Family who wasn't favored. His older brother was actually quite pleased about the incident and even gave Luke a large sum of money in private, more than what Akane Natsume had paid in compensation.

Akane Natsume had just sold the house to cover the medical compensation, and Luke gave the money to Akane Natsume.

Akane Natsume was also quite surprised by this.

But the issue of Luke's schooling remained unresolved.

Given his formidable reputation, not a single elementary school in the vicinity was willing to accept Luke.

Akane Natsume's heart was filled with worry, but Luke said it suited him just fine. Since the main storyline would start soon anyway, he could relax a bit early.

"You have a new task."

Luke tapped open the light screen.

Task: Loiter around the Hyakuya Orphanage for two hours.

Reward: The light novel 'Ichinose Guren: The Shattered Sixteen-Year-Old'.

Deadline: Before sunset today.

What kind of task is this?

Luke was very puzzled by this task.

He hadn't been back to the Hyakuya Orphanage since returning from Sanguinem because meeting with Saito would be awkward and dangerous.

Yet now Miku was telling him to go loiter nearby. He didn't know what would happen.

But the reward was truly attractive.

It could provide him with a lot of potentially useful information.

He glanced at the clock on the wall.

Around 2:20 PM.

No time to waste. After a quick wash-up and changing into casual clothes, Luke headed towards the Hyakuya Orphanage.

Come to think of it, Saito should know he returned safely, right? As Japan's largest curse technique organization, the Hyakuya Sect should have that much intelligence network.

But why hadn't they come to cause trouble for Luke?

When he first returned, Luke was constantly on edge, but there had been no movement for months.

The moment Luke entered within a kilometer of the Hyakuya Orphanage, Miku started the timer.

If being here is enough, then I'll just look around this area.

Time passed quickly. Over an hour went by as Luke absentmindedly found a stray cat to pet and lost himself in thought.

He had helped many cats in the Shibuya area while doing tasks.

Now, legends about him circulated among the stray cat community of Shibuya.

Older cats would tell the kittens: If you meet a silver-haired boy when you're hungry, don't be afraid. He is the Messenger sent by the Cat God to help you;

If you meet the Messenger when you're in trouble, you need not worry, for he will help you escape your predicament;

But if you meet the Messenger while sunbathing, then offer up your soft belly. It is the reward he deserves.

Don't worry, the Messenger is very gentle. You won't feel any discomfort.

Of course, Luke knew none of this.

"Such a cute little kitten!"

As Luke was lost in thought, a sweet voice reached his ears.

Looking towards the sound, he saw a girl with grayish-purple hair, who appeared to be about seven or eight years old, gazing curiously at the purring calico cat comfortably nestled in his arms.

"I'm so jealous. Little animals always run away from me, but they're so well-behaved with you."

Shinoa Hiragi! That must be her.

"Hello."

Luke politely lifted his head to greet her.

"Ah! It's you, the super invincible violent Little Snow Wolf!"

Shinoa Hiragi exclaimed in surprise upon seeing the boy's face.

Luke's expression froze.

Is this some new way of greeting people?

Noticing his confusion, Shinoa Hiragi explained with a smile:

"It's like this. I saw you beat up that person from the Goshi Family."

Luke understood.

"But who came up with this nickname?"

Shinoa Hiragi gave a faint smile.

"It was me~ What do you think? Does it fit?"

Luke was somewhat speechless.

"How is that like me at all, you idiot!"

Shinoa Hiragi stubbornly insisted.

"It fits perfectly! When you were fighting, you were super invincibly violent. Three people couldn't hold you back. You have silver hair and look so pretty, but you're so wild—just like a Little Snow Wolf cub!"

Shinoa Hiragi was always blunt.

For a moment, Luke was at a loss for words to retort.

Seeing his silence, Shinoa Hiragi thought he had accepted the nickname and her creativity, nodding with satisfaction.

"Hey, Little Snow Wolf, why did you hit that Goshi guy?"

"Didn't like him, so I hit him."

"You paralyzed his lower half just because you didn't like him? Would you hit me if you didn't like me?"

"He kept looking down on me and insulting my mother. I only slapped him once and knocked out a tooth. Then he charged at me to fight, so I defended myself."

"Huh?!"

Shinoa Hiragi was a bit taken aback. This little wolf still dared to claim he wasn't violent.

"Isn't that a bit excessive for self-defense?"

"Is it? I left him alive, didn't I?"

Now even Shinoa Hiragi was truly speechless.

But she realized this wasn't a good topic and pointed to the cat in Luke's arms.

"Let me hold it."

Luke shook his head.

"It says it doesn't like you."

Shinoa Hiragi protested.

"Liar! It didn't even meow."

"Telepathy."

Shinoa Hiragi was so annoyed she pouted, grumbling, 'Hmph, who cares...' Luke found her expression rather amusing. So cute.

"Here, you can hold it."

Instantly, Shinoa Hiragi's unhappiness vanished, replaced by a beaming smile as she took the kitten. The speed of her mood change left Luke utterly astounded.

Ah, so soft and comfortable! So this is what petting a cat feels like.

But the kitten seemed a bit restless in her arms.

Feeling the kitten squirm, Shinoa Hiragi handed it back to Luke, somewhat dejected.

"It really doesn't seem to like me much. But thank you. This was my first time petting a cat, a very happy first experience!"

Luke took the kitten back, and it immediately settled down, lying quietly in his arms.

Shinoa Hiragi felt a twinge of jealousy.

"Honestly, why would a little kitten like a violent maniac like you?"

Luke glanced at her but said nothing.

The reason small animals were unwilling to get close to Shinoa Hiragi was probably due to the aura of shikama doji on her.

Once Shinoa Hiragi gained deeper control over shikama doji, she would be able to interact with small animals normally.

"Little Snow Wolf, what's your name? And why are you here?"

"Shouldn't you introduce yourself first before asking someone's name?"

Shinoa Hiragi hesitated for a moment, then answered truthfully, "My name is Shinoa Hiragi."

"Luke."

Shinoa Hiragi noticed the boy didn't seem to react to her name at all, which struck her as odd.

"My name is Shinoa Hiragi, you know."

"You already said that."

"Aren't you surprised? I'm from the Hiragi family!"

"Why should I be surprised?"

"The Hiragi family! The leaders of the Emperor's Demons!"

"So?"

Shinoa Hiragi was momentarily stunned. She realized this Little Snow Wolf seemed different from other kids her age who wanted to curry favor with her.

"No wonder you dared to hit someone from the Goshi Family. Turns out you're just an idiot with no reverence for prestigious families."

"We're all human. Why should prestigious families be considered superior to me? Are you very proud of your Hiragi family identity?"

Hearing this, Shinoa Hiragi hurriedly explained.

"Not at all. The Hiragi family is what I hate the most."

Luke nodded.

"Then by your own logic, you're an idiot too."
