Chapter 34 - Chapter 33:Vanessa Pushes Too Far

The rest of the afternoon at Rivera Group felt unusually tense.

Not because of deadlines.

Not because of meetings.

But because of the moment that had almost happened in the elevator.

Sofia Mirano sat at her desk staring at her computer screen, yet she had read the same email three times without processing a single word.

Leo's voice echoed in her mind.

"You matter to me more than you should."

Her fingers paused above the keyboard.

What had he really meant?

The words hadn't been a full confession.

But they hadn't been casual either.

Sofia exhaled slowly.

The unfinished conversation hung between them like a question neither of them had answered yet.

Across the hall, Leo Rivera sat behind his desk reviewing quarterly projections.

Or at least pretending to.

Because his thoughts were somewhere else entirely.

The elevator.

Her expression.

The moment he had nearly crossed a line he had been trying very hard not to cross.

Leo leaned back in his chair and rubbed his temple.

He was usually a man of control.

But lately, that control felt dangerously thin whenever Sofia was involved.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in."

The office door opened.

Vanessa Clarke stepped inside.

Leo looked up immediately.

"Yes?"

Vanessa walked in confidently, holding a tablet.

"I wanted to discuss the marketing proposal revisions."

Leo nodded toward the chair across from him.

"Sit."

Vanessa sat down, crossing one leg neatly over the other.

For a few minutes, the conversation stayed strictly professional.

Marketing budgets.

Campaign strategies.

International expansion.

But Vanessa had not come to his office only for business.

And eventually, the conversation shifted.

She closed her tablet slowly.

"There's something else I wanted to mention."

Leo's eyes narrowed slightly.

"What is it?"

Vanessa leaned back in her chair.

"The office atmosphere today."

Leo's voice cooled slightly.

"What about it?"

Vanessa gave a small, thoughtful smile.

"People are talking."

Leo remained silent.

Vanessa continued casually.

"They're curious."

"About?"

Vanessa tilted her head slightly.

"You and Sofia."

Leo's expression hardened instantly.

"That topic isn't appropriate for this office."

Vanessa didn't seem intimidated.

"With respect, Mr. Rivera… the entire company is already discussing it."

Leo's voice dropped slightly.

"That doesn't mean you should encourage it."

Vanessa studied him carefully.

"I'm not encouraging anything."

She paused.

"I'm observing."

Leo leaned forward.

"And what exactly are you observing?"

Vanessa's smile returned.

"That you seem unusually protective of your secretary."

Leo didn't respond.

Vanessa's tone remained calm.

"Lunch together. Private conversations. Leaving the party together."

Leo's voice became sharp.

"Miss Clarke."

"Yes?"

"You're stepping into a conversation that isn't your concern."

Vanessa held his gaze.

"Perhaps."

Then she said quietly,

"But you should be careful."

Leo frowned.

"Careful?"

"Yes."

Vanessa leaned forward slightly.

"Companies don't usually appreciate relationships between CEOs and their direct employees."

The warning hung in the air.

Leo stood from his chair.

The movement was calm.

But unmistakably firm.

"This discussion is over."

Vanessa stood as well.

She picked up her tablet slowly.

"I meant no offense."

Leo didn't answer.

Vanessa walked toward the door.

But before leaving, she turned back one last time.

"You know," she said softly, "rumors can be dangerous."

Leo crossed his arms.

"So can assumptions."

Vanessa smiled faintly.

Then she left.

The door closed behind her.

Leo stood still for several seconds, staring at the door.

Vanessa's words lingered in his mind.

Companies don't appreciate relationships between CEOs and their direct employees.

He knew that.

Of course he did.

It was one of the first rules of corporate leadership.

And yet…

He walked toward the window, looking out over the city skyline.

Some rules were easier to follow before you met someone who made breaking them feel worth it.

Outside his office, Sofia had finished organizing the next day's meeting schedules.

She stood to stretch her shoulders when she noticed Vanessa walking past her desk.

Vanessa stopped.

"Good afternoon, Sofia."

Sofia nodded politely.

"Good afternoon."

Vanessa studied her for a moment.

"You seem very busy today."

"There's always something to organize."

Vanessa's lips curved slightly.

"I imagine Mr. Rivera keeps you very busy."

Sofia recognized the tone immediately.

"Yes."

Vanessa leaned lightly against the edge of Sofia's desk.

"You two seem… close lately."

Sofia kept her voice calm.

"We work together every day."

Vanessa smiled.

"Of course."

Then her voice lowered slightly.

"You should be careful."

Sofia frowned.

"Careful?"

Vanessa straightened.

"Office rumors can be cruel."

Sofia met her eyes.

"I'm aware."

Vanessa tilted her head slightly.

"Just remember… powerful men rarely mix business with emotions."

The words felt like a quiet challenge.

Sofia didn't respond.

Vanessa gave one final polite smile before walking away.

But the comment stayed in Sofia's mind.

Later that evening, the office floor slowly began to empty again.

Employees gathered their things and left for the day.

Sofia finished sending the final emails and shut down her computer.

Across the hall, Leo's office light was still on.

She hesitated for a moment before walking over and knocking lightly.

"Come in."

She stepped inside.

Leo looked up from his desk.

"Sofia."

"I finished the schedule for tomorrow."

She placed the folder on his desk.

Leo nodded.

"Thank you."

For a moment neither of them spoke.

But the tension from earlier lingered quietly in the room.

Sofia finally asked softly,

"Did something happen today?"

Leo looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Vanessa."

Leo's expression hardened slightly.

"She spoke to you?"

"Yes."

Leo exhaled slowly.

"She's pushing boundaries."

Sofia folded her arms lightly.

"She warned me about rumors."

Leo almost laughed.

"That's ironic."

Sofia studied him carefully.

"Is she right?"

Leo frowned.

"About what?"

"That companies don't like relationships between CEOs and their employees."

Leo didn't answer immediately.

Instead he stood and walked around the desk.

Stopping only a few steps away from her.

"That depends," he said quietly.

"On what?"

Leo looked directly at her.

"On whether the relationship matters enough."

Sofia's heart skipped.

The room felt suddenly smaller.

More intense.

She lowered her voice slightly.

"And does it?"

Leo opened his mouth to answer.

But once again…

The words refused to come out.

Because saying them would change everything.

And neither of them seemed ready to take that step.

Yet.
