Chapter 38: Super Soldier Serum?
Inside a suburban Oscorp laboratory, Lance Ryder stood silently on a steel beam high above the massive facility, watching the fierce battle unfolding below.
The scene was chaotic.
When two Spider-Men suddenly appeared in the laboratory at the same time, Norman Osborn, Dr. Spencer, Alister Spencer, Eddie Brock, and several assassins working for Wilson Fisk were completely stunned.
None of them had expected things to spiral so far out of control.
Eddie Brock had never planned for Fisk's men to appear.
According to the original plan, once Spider-Man was captured, they were supposed to hand him over to the New York Police Department.
Eddie's relationship with the police wasn't perfect—he still had a few outstanding warrants—but it was manageable.
However, Fisk's assassins had arrived to kill Spider-Man.
If that happened while the cameras were still broadcasting, the consequences would be disastrous.
The citizens of New York would never forgive Eddie Brock.
They might even tear him apart.
And J. Jonah Jameson certainly wouldn't protect him.
Even if Spider-Man died, the Daily Bugle would be linked directly to organized crime.
Dr. Spencer quickly realized what had happened.
He narrowed his eyes and looked at Norman Osborn.
"I didn't expect you to be working with Fisk."
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Osborn replied calmly.
Of course, he had no intention of admitting anything.
The entire operation had been arranged by him.
Spider-Man was a living person. If he died inside an Oscorp laboratory, the police would immediately launch an investigation.
To avoid that problem, it was better if Fisk took the blame.
The battle began almost immediately.
Even though Fisk's assassins carried submachine guns, they were no match for Spider-Man.
Seeing this, Dr. Spencer quickly activated the Spider Killer — Black Widow.
Peter Parker was incredibly strong.
But the mechanical spider was equally dangerous.
Its armor was extremely tough.
Even when Parker swung a steel beam at it, he couldn't leave a single scratch on its shell.
Meanwhile, Norman Osborn walked to the control console.
He activated the two remaining drones, sending them toward Spider-Man.
The drones didn't cause much damage.
But their attacks triggered explosions across the laboratory floor.
Soon, flames began spreading rapidly throughout the facility.
From above, Lance noticed something strange.
The fire was spreading far too quickly.
He inhaled deeply and caught a faint chemical smell in the air.
Some kind of volatile gas was present.
That gas was accelerating the flames.
Spider-Man noticed it as well.
His enhanced senses quickly located the source.
In the corner of the lab stood a stone container filled with a strange green liquid.
The substance was extremely corrosive.
Only the stone container could withstand it.
As one of Empire State University's top students, Parker quickly understood what he was seeing.
The acidic liquid could dissolve even the incredibly durable armor of the mechanical spider.
It might be the only substance capable of destroying the Black Widow.
Waiting for the perfect opportunity, Parker leapt onto the mechanical spider's back.
While the machine struggled to track his position, he fired a web directly into one of its engine nozzles.
BOOM!
Flames surged backward through the machine.
The sudden explosion damaged its propulsion system.
The mechanical spider lost control and crashed violently to the ground.
Straight into the stone container of green liquid.
The corrosive reaction intensified immediately.
The air filled with even more toxic gas.
And then—
Another explosion erupted.
The entire laboratory was swallowed by flames.
Outside the building, Alister Spencer witnessed the explosion.
He grabbed Norman Osborn anxiously.
"Mr. Osborn! Where's my father?"
Earlier, Dr. Spencer had paused inside the burning lab to ensure Spider-Man was truly dead.
That single moment sealed his fate.
"I'm sorry, Alister," Osborn said grimly.
He signaled his men to push Alister toward the car.
But suddenly—
Alister activated a mechanism on his wheelchair.
The wheels locked firmly in place.
Osborn's men could no longer move him.
Alister slowly turned toward the burning laboratory.
Half of his face glowed red from the firelight.
The other half remained hidden in darkness.
"No," he said firmly.
"I won't give up."
Osborn frowned.
Then he waved his hand impatiently.
"Fine. Do whatever you want."
At that moment, Osborn had no patience left.
He had only helped Alister earlier because Dr. Spencer had worked for him.
But now—
The son clearly didn't appreciate it.
Norman Osborn climbed into the car and left.
Eddie Brock left with him.
And Brock's situation was about to become very unpleasant.
He had captured Spider-Man.
He had even removed the mask during a live broadcast.
But the person revealed beneath the mask had been a fake Spider-Man.
The result?
Eddie Brock—and the entire Daily Bugle—had become laughingstocks.
Brock could already imagine Jameson's furious reaction.
His hands trembled as he thought about it.
And worse—
If the police discovered any connection between him and Wilson Fisk, his journalism career would be finished.
Not far from the burning laboratory, the man both Osborn and Brock feared stood silently.
Wilson Fisk.
Kingpin himself.
When distant police sirens began echoing through the night, Fisk stepped out of the shadows.
He approached Alister Spencer.
"Good evening, Alister."
Startled, Alister turned toward him cautiously.
"Who are you?"
"I was your father's partner once," Fisk said calmly.
"I'm very sorry for what happened tonight."
In truth, Fisk had watched the entire battle from nearby.
If Spider-Man had shown even a small weakness, Fisk would have killed him personally.
Spider-Man had been lucky.
At the same time, it meant something else.
If Lance had intervened to help Spider-Man earlier—
Fisk might have noticed him.
Being targeted by Kingpin was never good news.
"My father…" Alister whispered.
The flames illuminated half his face while the other half remained in shadow.
"I can help you," Fisk said softly.
"I can help you take revenge."
His voice was like a whisper from a demon.
"I can give you everything you need."
"I'll fund a new Spider Killer."
"One powerful enough to destroy the man who killed your father."
"Spider-Man."
The words struck Alister directly in the heart.
The hatred inside him ignited instantly.
Seeing the expression on Alister's face, Fisk smiled faintly.
Soon afterward, Fisk helped Alister leave the area.
The approaching police sirens were getting louder.
If Alister were arrested now, he would never be able to explain his role in the attempted murder of Spider-Man.
Watching them disappear, Lance quietly released his invisibility spell.
At his feet lay the unconscious body of Dr. Spencer.
Just before the laboratory exploded, Lance had secretly rescued him.
Both the Spider Killer Black Widow and the super-corrosive acid used in the experiment were extremely valuable technologies.
And with Dr. Spencer alive—
Lance could eventually obtain both.
But that wasn't the only gain tonight.
Fisk had taken Alister Spencer under his wing.
If Dr. Spencer ever resurfaced, Lance would immediately gain leverage over Alister.
That meant he had secretly planted a valuable pawn inside Kingpin's inner circle.
At the right moment, Lance could expose Fisk—or use him as a shield.
As for Spider-Man—
Lance wasn't worried.
By now, Tony Stark had probably already noticed him.
In S.H.I.E.L.D.'s long-term planning, Spider-Man might even be considered a potential future Avenger.
Even with Alister Spencer and Fisk working together, killing Spider-Man would not be easy.
After arranging Alister's safe location, Fisk returned to his office.
Inside the dimly lit room hung a massive painting of Spider-Man.
Fisk approached it slowly and sneered.
Above the painting were three photographs.
Two of them showed people Lance had met earlier that night.
Felicia Hardy.
And her mother, Lydia Hardy.
Between them was a photograph of a middle-aged white man wearing a prison uniform.
Fisk stared at the images thoughtfully.
This time, Spider-Man wasn't his only target.
The Hardy mother and daughter were just as important.
Perhaps even more important.
Because of the man in the middle photograph.
"Super soldier…" Fisk murmured quietly.
"The Super Soldier Serum formula…"
"How can I get you?"
Kingpin stood silently in the dark, lost in thought
