Chapter 16 - CHAPTER SIXTEEN: The Ghost From His Past

The photograph stayed on the table between them.

For several minutes, nobody moved.

The room that had been filled with Luca's men, voices, and tension suddenly became completely silent.

Isabella looked from the picture to Luca's face.

She had never seen him like this.

Not angry.

Not cold.

Not controlled.

Just… shaken.

And that scared her more than anything.

Because Luca was the kind of man who made other people nervous. He walked into a room and everyone immediately knew who was in charge. He carried himself like nothing could touch him.

But this photograph had broken through something.

Something buried.

Something he had spent years trying to forget.

"Luca," Isabella whispered.

He didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the picture.

Sofia.

The woman from his past.

The woman who had disappeared five years ago.

The woman who seemed to hold a piece of Luca that Isabella had never seen before.

Marco stood quietly nearby, watching his boss.

Finally, Luca reached for the photograph.

"Where was this found?"

One of the men in the room stepped forward.

"In the old warehouse near the east side. It was hidden inside a locked room."

Luca's expression hardened.

"That warehouse was abandoned."

"Yes."

"By who?"

The man hesitated.

And Isabella noticed.

Luca noticed too.

"Answer me."

"By your father's people."

The air changed.

Isabella felt it immediately.

Luca's father.

Another piece of the mystery.

Another shadow hanging over him.

Luca placed the photograph back on the table.

"My father's people have been gone for years."

Marco exchanged a glance with him.

"Not all of them."

Those words carried a warning.

Isabella looked between them.

"What does that mean?"

Neither man answered immediately.

And that annoyed her.

She had spent days being pulled deeper into Luca's world, yet everyone seemed determined to keep her at the edge of it.

She stepped closer.

"No."

Both Luca and Marco looked at her.

"No what?" Luca asked.

"No more secrets."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Isabella."

"No, Luca. I understand that your world is dangerous. I understand that there are things you're trying to protect me from. But you can't keep telling me I'm important while treating me like I don't deserve the truth."

The room became silent again.

Nobody spoke to Luca like that.

Nobody challenged him.

But Isabella did.

And somehow, that made him listen.

After a long moment, Luca looked at his men.

"Leave."

They immediately obeyed.

Soon, only Luca, Isabella, and Marco remained.

Luca walked toward the window.

"My father wasn't just a businessman."

Isabella waited.

"He controlled everything before me. The money. The connections. The people who worked in the shadows."

His voice was calm, but she could hear the pain underneath.

"I spent my entire life trying to become different from him."

"And did you?"

The question made him pause.

"I thought I did."

Isabella watched him carefully.

"But?"

He looked back at her.

"But power changes people."

For the first time, Isabella saw the fear behind Luca's confidence.

Not fear of an enemy.

Fear of becoming the very person he hated.

"My father believed emotions made people weak," Luca continued. "He taught me that love was a weakness. That anyone you cared about could be used against you."

His eyes lowered.

"And Sofia was the first person who made me believe he was wrong."

Isabella's heart softened.

"What happened?"

Luca was quiet.

Then he answered.

"I chose my family over her."

The words were heavy.

"And I lost her."

Isabella didn't know what to say.

Because Luca wasn't just talking about a person.

He was talking about regret.

The kind that stayed with someone for years.

"The night she disappeared, I thought she was taken because of me," Luca said. "I searched everywhere. I destroyed every person who stood in my way."

A darkness entered his voice.

"But I never found her."

"And now someone is bringing her back."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Luca looked at the photograph.

"That's what we need to find out."

The investigation continued for hours.

Documents were examined.

Old records were reviewed.

Names Isabella didn't recognize were mentioned.

She listened quietly, trying to understand the world Luca came from.

It was bigger than she imagined.

More complicated.

More dangerous.

But what surprised her most was not the violence or the power.

It was how lonely Luca seemed.

A man surrounded by people.

Yet completely alone.

Later that night, they returned to the penthouse.

The silence between them was different.

Not uncomfortable.

Just full of everything they hadn't said.

Isabella stood near the window again, looking over the city.

Luca approached slowly.

"You should leave."

She turned around.

The words surprised her.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Her expression changed.

"You want me to leave?"

"No."

The answer came instantly.

And that told her everything.

Luca stepped closer.

"I want you safe."

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

His voice softened.

"It isn't."

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

"You're afraid," Isabella said.

Luca looked away.

"I don't get afraid."

"Everyone gets afraid."

"Not me."

She smiled slightly.

"You're terrible at lying."

A small laugh escaped him.

A real one.

The kind she rarely heard.

And for a brief moment, the danger disappeared.

There was only them.

Two people standing in the middle of a storm, pretending they weren't being affected by it.

"I don't know what you've done in your past," Isabella said quietly. "I don't know everything you've been through. But I know the person standing in front of me."

Luca looked at her.

"And what if you're wrong?"

"Then I'll find out."

"You're stubborn."

"Yes."

"You don't listen."

"Also yes."

This time, he smiled.

But then his expression became serious.

"Isabella."

The way he said her name made her stop.

"I need you to understand something."

"What?"

"The 90 days started as a challenge."

She nodded.

"But it changed."

Her heartbeat increased.

Luca moved closer.

"It stopped being about proving something. It stopped being about curiosity."

His voice lowered.

"Somewhere along the way, you became the one person I don't want to lose."

The honesty in his words affected her.

Because Luca was not a man who gave away pieces of himself easily.

And yet, with her, he was trying.

A sudden sound interrupted the moment.

A phone ringing.

Luca immediately looked toward it.

Not his phone.

Isabella's.

Her stomach tightened.

She looked down.

Unknown number.

Again.

Luca's expression changed.

"Don't answer."

But the phone stopped.

Then a message appeared.

Isabella opened it before she could stop herself.

This time, there were only four words.

She never disappeared alone.

The color drained from Luca's face.

Because this message wasn't meant for Isabella.

It was meant for him.

And whoever sent it knew exactly where to hurt him.

Luca took the phone from her hand.

His eyes darkened.

"Pack your things."

Isabella frowned.

"What?"

"We're leaving."

"Where?"

"Somewhere they can't find you."

She stared at him.

"You still don't understand, do you?"

Luca looked at her.

"What?"

"I'm not running away every time your past appears."

His expression softened.

"Isabella"

"No."

She stepped closer.

"I chose to enter your world."

The words hit him.

"And I'm choosing to stay."

For a moment, Luca said nothing.

Then he pulled her into his arms.

Not out of control.

Not possession.

Something else.

Something far more dangerous.

Fear.

Because Luca had spent his entire life losing people.

And now he finally had someone he couldn't imagine losing.

But somewhere in the darkness outside, someone was watching.

Someone who knew Luca's past.

Someone who knew Sofia's secret.

And someone who was prepared to destroy the only thing Luca had ever truly wanted.

Her.
