Chapter 316 - Chapter 316: The Firstborn of the New World

The ocean was rising.

Not because of a storm.

Not because of an earthquake.

The water itself was being displaced.

Far beyond the western shore, something enormous was standing beneath the sea, and its body was so massive that the ocean could no longer contain it. Water poured from its back in gigantic waterfalls, crashing into the sea below and creating waves that traveled toward the coast.

Everyone on the battlefield stared.

The Firstborn soldiers had stopped moving.

The villagers had forgotten their fear of the invading army.

Even the wounded had lifted their heads.

For several seconds, nobody seemed capable of understanding what they were seeing.

Then the first wave struck.

It rose above the distant shoreline like a wall.

Nera's face became pale.

"Everyone!"

Her voice finally broke the silence.

"Get away from the coast!"

The settlement erupted into movement.

People screamed.

Children were pulled from houses.

Warriors shouted instructions.

The Firstborn soldiers abandoned their formations and began running inland.

Kael stood completely still.

The seed was still in his hand.

It was warm.

Almost alive.

Every few seconds, it pulsed against his palm.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Kael looked toward the creature beyond the ocean.

Its enormous head remained above the clouds.

Two eyes burned through the darkness.

The creature wasn't moving quickly.

It didn't need to.

Every movement of its body created waves large enough to destroy cities.

Aren ran toward Kael.

"We need to move!"

Kael nodded.

"Everyone inland."

Aren looked toward the ocean.

"Are you coming?"

Kael didn't answer.

Aren grabbed his shoulder.

"Kael."

Kael finally looked at him.

"That thing spoke to us."

"Yes."

"It wants the seed."

"Yes."

"Then we can't just run."

Aren stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because if it reaches the settlement..."

Kael looked around.

Thousands of people were fleeing.

"Everyone here dies."

Aren's expression hardened.

"Then what do we do?"

Kael looked at the seed.

"We find out what it is."

Aren stared at him.

"Now?"

Kael nodded.

"Now."

Elara approached.

She had been watching the seed.

"It remembers it."

Kael looked at her.

"The creature?"

"No."

She touched the seed.

"The seed remembers the creature."

Kael frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

"Can you access its memories?"

Elara hesitated.

"I can try."

She placed both hands around the seed.

Her eyes closed.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then her expression changed.

Kael immediately noticed.

"Elara?"

She didn't answer.

Her breathing became slower.

The seed began glowing.

A silver light spread from her hands.

Then Elara whispered,

"Mother."

Kael froze.

"What?"

Her eyes opened.

She looked terrified.

"That's what it called itself."

Kael stared.

"The creature is the mother?"

Elara nodded slowly.

"It said the seed was its child."

Kael looked at the object.

"A seed can't have a mother."

"This one can."

Elara looked toward the ocean.

"The creature didn't create the seed."

Kael waited.

"It gave birth to it."

The words made no sense.

Kael looked at Seraphine.

She had heard everything.

"Can you explain?"

Seraphine shook her head.

"Not scientifically."

"Then theoretically."

She stared at the seed.

"Maybe the seed isn't a plant."

"What is it?"

"An organism."

Kael frowned.

"An organism capable of becoming a world?"

Seraphine nodded.

"Possibly."

Elara interrupted.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"It isn't becoming a world."

She looked at the seed.

"The world is becoming it."

Silence.

Kael stared.

Elara continued.

"The land."

"The oceans."

"The creatures."

"The magic."

"Everything."

"The seed isn't the foundation of this world."

"It is the heart."

Kael looked toward the enormous creature.

"And that thing?"

Elara swallowed.

"The mother."

Another wave struck the shore.

The settlement walls shook.

Kael immediately turned.

"Everyone inland!"

His voice carried across the battlefield.

The villagers obeyed.

The Firstborn soldiers did the same.

Even Lucian moved.

The former king approached Kael.

His armor was damaged.

Blood covered his face.

Kael raised his sword.

Lucian stopped.

"I'm not here to fight."

Kael didn't lower his weapon.

"Why should I believe you?"

"Because I was wrong."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Lucian looked toward the ocean.

"I thought the seed could control the world."

"But it can't."

"It can only awaken it."

Kael lowered his sword slightly.

"You knew about the creature."

Lucian nodded.

"Not everything."

"How much?"

"Enough to be afraid."

Lucian looked at the seed.

"The Firstborn found records beneath the western continent."

"Records from before our civilization."

"They spoke about the Mother."

Kael frowned.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Would you have listened?"

Kael didn't answer.

Lucian continued.

"The records said the Mother would awaken when the seed was removed from its resting place."

"And?"

"We thought we could control the seed before that happened."

"You failed."

"Yes."

Lucian looked toward the ocean.

"And now everyone will pay for it."

Kael studied him.

Then he asked,

"Where is the resting place?"

Lucian looked surprised.

"The seed was never supposed to leave it."

"Where?"

"Under the western continent."

Kael's expression became serious.

"Then why did the Firstborn steal it?"

Lucian looked at Elara.

"Because the records said the seed would eventually awaken anyway."

"So you tried to awaken it first?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"We tried to destroy it."

Everyone became silent.

Kael looked down at the seed.

"You can't destroy it."

"We learned that."

"What happened?"

Lucian laughed bitterly.

"The first attempt killed three hundred people."

"The second destroyed an entire laboratory."

"The third..."

He stopped.

"What?"

"It woke the Mother for seven minutes."

Kael's eyes widened.

"What happened?"

Lucian looked toward the horizon.

"We lost a city."

Aren approached.

"How many people?"

Lucian answered quietly.

"Two million."

The battlefield became silent.

Even Aren had nothing to say.

Kael looked toward the approaching creature.

It was still moving.

Slowly.

But the waves were becoming larger.

Kael turned toward Nera.

"How long until it reaches us?"

Nera looked at the ocean.

"Less than an hour."

Kael nodded.

"We need to get the seed back."

Lucian stared.

"You can't."

"Why?"

"The resting place is beneath the western capital."

Kael's expression hardened.

"Then that's where we're going."

Lucian shook his head.

"The western capital is already under attack."

"By the Mother?"

"No."

Lucian looked toward the ocean.

"By what came with her."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Lucian pointed toward the water.

At first, Kael saw only waves.

Then he noticed movement.

Thousands of dark shapes were swimming beneath the surface.

Some were small.

Some were enormous.

They moved toward the coast.

Nera's voice became quiet.

"The offspring."

Aren stared.

"Offspring?"

Lucian nodded.

"The Mother doesn't travel alone."

The first creature emerged from the ocean.

It looked like a massive serpent with six limbs and rows of translucent fins along its back.

Another appeared.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Then hundreds.

The shoreline became filled with them.

The creatures moved quickly.

Much faster than the Mother.

Kael raised his sword.

"Everyone."

His companions gathered.

Aren stood beside him.

Lyra's staff began glowing.

Seraphine prepared several formations.

Rowan moved toward the settlement's defenders.

Selene and Mira began organizing the wounded.

Caelum closed his eyes.

Nera drew her blade.

Lucian looked toward Kael.

"You'll need every soldier."

Kael glanced at him.

"You willing to fight?"

Lucian smiled.

"For once."

He drew his sword.

"Yes."

The first sea creature reached the shore.

It opened its mouth.

A stream of water erupted.

Kael raised his hand.

A barrier appeared.

The attack struck.

The barrier cracked.

Aren charged through the opening.

His sword struck the creature's head.

The creature recoiled.

Rowan followed.

His weapon slammed into its side.

The beast fell.

Another attacked from behind.

Nera appeared above it.

Her blade cut through one of its fins.

The creature screamed.

Lyra raised her staff.

Lightning struck the ground.

Several creatures were thrown backward.

"There's too many!"

Seraphine shouted.

"I know!"

Kael looked toward the ocean.

More were coming.

Hundreds.

Maybe thousands.

Kael felt the seed pulse again.

The creatures suddenly stopped.

Every one of them turned toward him.

Kael froze.

They weren't looking at the settlement.

They weren't looking at the Firstborn.

They were looking at the seed.

The nearest creature lowered its head.

Then another.

Then another.

One by one, the creatures bowed.

Aren stared.

"What are they doing?"

Kael didn't answer.

The seed began glowing brighter.

Elara stepped beside him.

"They recognize it."

Kael looked at her.

"As what?"

She stared at the creatures.

"As their source."

The nearest creature spoke.

Its voice wasn't verbal.

It appeared directly inside Kael's mind.

Return.

Kael's eyes widened.

Another voice followed.

Return.

Then hundreds.

Return.

Return.

Return.

The word echoed inside his mind until it became almost unbearable.

Kael grabbed his head.

"Stop."

The voices became louder.

Elara touched his shoulder.

"Kael!"

He dropped to one knee.

The seed floated from his hand.

It rose into the air.

The sea creatures all bowed deeper.

The Mother stopped moving.

Its enormous head rose above the clouds.

Then its voice reached them.

Not through magic.

Not through sound.

Through existence itself.

Child.

Kael looked up.

The seed floated before him.

The creature continued.

Return.

Kael stood.

The seed moved toward the ocean.

Elara grabbed his hand.

"Don't let it go."

Kael looked at her.

"If we keep it..."

"The Mother will destroy everything."

"If we return it..."

"The world may change."

Kael stared at the sea.

A choice.

Again.

The same word.

But this time there was no cycle forcing him.

No Aster.

No ancient law.

No prophecy.

Only consequences.

Kael looked at his companions.

Aren was injured.

Lyra was exhausted.

Seraphine had blood running from her nose.

Rowan's armor was broken.

Selene and Mira were surrounded by wounded people.

Caelum looked terrified.

Nera was watching the ocean.

Lucian stood silently.

Kael looked at Elara.

"What do you think?"

Elara didn't answer immediately.

Then she said,

"I think we should ask."

Kael smiled.

"Everyone?"

"Everyone."

Kael raised his hand.

The silver point on his palm activated.

A connection spread.

Not like the old network.

It didn't force itself into anyone's mind.

Instead, it reached the people nearby.

The villagers.

The Firstborn.

His companions.

Everyone felt the same question.

Should the seed be returned?

Silence followed.

Then Varek stepped forward.

He looked at the seed.

Then at the ocean.

He raised his spear.

He shook his head.

No.

Another villager stepped beside him.

No.

Then another.

No.

The Firstborn soldiers looked at Lucian.

He lowered his sword.

"No."

Kael looked surprised.

Lucian said,

"If returning it means losing our world..."

He looked at the ocean.

"I refuse."

More people answered.

No.

No.

No.

The answer spread.

The Mother suddenly roared.

The ocean rose.

Kael's connection almost shattered.

He staggered.

Elara caught him.

The creature's voice entered his mind.

You deny your origin.

Kael looked toward it.

"No."

You deny your creator.

"No."

You deny your purpose.

Kael's eyes hardened.

"I don't have one."

The Mother became still.

Kael continued.

"I don't know what this world was supposed to become."

"I don't know what the seed was meant to do."

"I don't know what you are."

"But I know one thing."

He raised his sword.

"This world belongs to the people living in it."

The Mother stared.

Kael's voice carried across the battlefield.

"Not to you."

"Not to the Firstborn."

"Not to me."

"Not to the seed."

He looked toward Elara.

"Nobody gets to decide for everyone."

The silver light spread from his palm.

The seed stopped moving.

For the first time, the Mother seemed uncertain.

Then something strange happened.

The seed began changing.

Its silver shell cracked.

Light emerged.

Not silver.

Not gold.

Every color.

A tiny root appeared.

Then another.

The seed began growing.

Right there in the air.

Kael stared.

"What is happening?"

Seraphine's eyes widened.

"It's responding to the collective choice."

Elara whispered,

"It isn't obeying the Mother."

"Then who is it obeying?"

Elara looked at Kael.

"No one."

The seed continued growing.

A tiny branch appeared.

Then another.

But instead of forming a World Tree, the branches split into countless directions.

Some moved toward the sea.

Some toward the mountains.

Some toward the sky.

Some toward the ground.

Some simply disappeared into empty space.

Kael realized what it was doing.

"It isn't creating a center."

Seraphine nodded.

"It's spreading."

The seed wasn't becoming a World Tree.

It was becoming something else.

A living network without a center.

A system without a ruler.

A world that connected without being controlled.

The Mother roared.

This time, the sound carried rage.

The sea creatures attacked.

Kael raised his sword.

"Defend the settlement!"

The battlefield erupted again.

Aren charged into the nearest group.

Lyra released a storm of lightning.

Rowan fought beside the town's warriors.

Nera moved like a shadow through the creatures.

Lucian and the Firstborn soldiers formed a defensive line.

Seraphine and Selene worked together to coordinate the battlefield.

Mira carried wounded people away from the fighting.

Caelum shouted directions based on the futures he could see.

Kael and Elara stood beneath the growing seed.

The Mother began moving faster.

The ocean rose behind it.

A wall of water taller than the settlement approached.

Kael looked at Elara.

"We can't stop that."

Elara nodded.

"No."

Kael looked at the seed.

"Then maybe we don't."

He raised his hand.

The silver point on his palm connected to the growing branches.

The new network spread.

Across the settlement.

Across the forest.

Across the mountains.

Across the ocean.

Kael could feel countless living beings.

Not just humans.

Not just Firstborn.

Animals.

Creatures.

Plants.

Even the strange life beneath the sea.

All of them became part of the connection.

But unlike the old network...

Kael couldn't control it.

He could only feel it.

The world was connecting itself.

The wave reached the shore.

Kael closed his eyes.

For a moment, everything disappeared.

Then he felt something.

The water was not attacking.

It was moving.

Around them.

The wave split.

A massive wall of water passed around the settlement on both sides.

The people stared in disbelief.

Kael opened his eyes.

The sea had changed direction.

Not because he controlled it.

Because the world itself had responded.

The wave crashed far behind the settlement.

The ground shook.

Then silence returned.

The Mother stopped.

Its enormous eyes stared toward the seed.

The seed had finished changing.

It was no longer a seed.

It was a small tree.

But unlike the artificial World Tree...

it had no trunk.

No central root.

No single heart.

It was simply a collection of branches floating through reality.

Elara looked at it.

"It chose."

Kael nodded.

"What did it choose?"

Elara smiled.

"Everyone."

The Mother stared at the new network.

Then slowly lowered its head.

For several seconds, nobody knew what it was doing.

Then the enormous creature spoke.

The voice was no longer angry.

It was almost sad.

Then it is free.

Kael looked at it.

The Mother began sinking into the ocean.

Kael shouted,

"Wait!"

The creature stopped.

"Why did you create it?"

The Mother looked toward the small living network.

Because this world needed a heart.

Kael frowned.

"And now?"

The creature's eyes softened.

Now it has many.

The Mother disappeared beneath the sea.

The creatures along the shore followed.

One after another, they returned to the ocean.

The battlefield became quiet.

The Firstborn lowered their weapons.

The villagers slowly emerged from their hiding places.

Nobody celebrated.

Not yet.

They were too exhausted.

Too confused.

Too overwhelmed.

Kael looked toward the floating branches of the new network.

Something had changed.

He could feel the world.

But the world wasn't inside him.

He wasn't its ruler.

He wasn't its god.

He was simply connected.

Elara stood beside him.

"So..."

Kael looked at her.

"We're done?"

She smiled.

"No."

"Why not?"

She pointed toward the western horizon.

"The western continent is still there."

Kael sighed.

Aren walked over.

"And we still need a boat."

Kael laughed.

"Right."

Lucian approached.

His sword was gone.

He looked at Kael.

"I owe you an apology."

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"For what?"

"For believing I knew what was best."

Kael smiled.

"You're not the first."

Lucian looked toward the ocean.

"What happens now?"

Kael looked at the new network.

"We find out."

Caelum suddenly spoke.

Everyone turned.

He was staring toward the western horizon.

"What?"

Kael asked.

Caelum's face was pale.

"I can see the future again."

Kael's expression became serious.

"What do you see?"

Caelum swallowed.

"The western continent."

"And?"

"A city."

"Whose?"

Caelum shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Then what?"

Caelum looked directly at Kael.

"There is a throne."

Kael frowned.

"Who is sitting on it?"

Caelum's voice became almost a whisper.

"You."

Kael froze.

Caelum continued.

"But you're not alone."

Behind Kael...

a second shadow appeared.

A shadow that did not belong to anyone standing there.

It slowly raised its head.

And opened its eyes.

Kael turned.

Nothing was there.

But the silver point on his palm had begun glowing.

A new voice whispered inside his mind.

Not the Mother.

Not Aster.

Not the Hunger.

Something else.

Welcome, Creator.

Kael's expression changed.

The new world had only just begun.

And already...

something was calling him by a name he had never chosen.
