Chapter 243 - Chapter 243: The Hall of Forgotten Names

Kael accepted the lantern from Eli with both hands.

The tiny blue flame resting inside its glass chamber flickered gently, casting soft light across the lonely cavern beneath the World Tree. Unlike ordinary fire, the blue flame produced no heat. Instead, it carried a strange feeling of comfort, like remembering a familiar voice after believing it had been lost forever.

Eli smiled shyly.

"It finally lit."

Kael looked down at the lantern.

"It was waiting?"

The little boy nodded.

"For you."

Silence settled between them.

The black lake before them remained perfectly still while the doorway formed from millions of glowing names shimmered quietly at the top of the stone staircase. Every name flowed into another like rivers joining the sea, creating an endless tapestry of lives that had once existed somewhere beneath the heavens.

Kael slowly walked toward the first step.

The wooden key resting in his other hand pulsed warmly.

Eli remained where he stood.

"You aren't coming?"

The little boy lowered his eyes.

"I can't."

He forced a small smile.

"My place is here."

Kael frowned.

"You've been alone long enough."

Eli looked genuinely surprised.

"No one has ever said that."

The words lingered painfully within the cavern.

Kael quietly turned around before walking back toward the child.

Without saying anything...

He reached out his hand.

Eli blinked.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm asking."

"For what?"

Kael smiled.

"Will you come with me?"

The little boy stared silently at the offered hand.

"I..."

His fingers tightened around the lantern.

"I don't think I'm allowed."

"Who told you that?"

Eli hesitated.

"I don't remember."

Kael knelt until they were eye level.

"Then maybe..."

His voice remained gentle.

"...it's time someone asked instead of ordered."

The child looked at Kael's hand for a long time.

Very slowly...

He placed his own small hand inside it.

The instant their hands touched...

The entire cavern trembled.

The blue lights floating beneath the roots erupted into brilliant radiance.

The dark lake rippled violently.

The doorway of countless names released a deep, resonant chime that echoed throughout the underground chambers.

Far above...

The World Tree answered with another heartbeat.

Eli looked around in shock.

"What happened?"

The wooden key glowed brightly.

Ancient silver letters slowly appeared across its surface.

**The Lonely Shall Walk Together.**

The words faded almost immediately.

Kael smiled faintly.

"I think..."

He looked toward the doorway.

"...the Lock approved."

Eli's eyes slowly filled with tears.

"No one..."

He laughed quietly while wiping them away.

"...has ever held my hand before."

The two of them climbed the stone staircase together.

Every step caused another name within the enormous doorway to illuminate.

Some names belonged to kings.

Others to farmers.

Some belonged to children who had lived only a few days.

Others belonged to old women who had spent peaceful lives tending flowers.

Every name shone with equal brilliance.

None appeared greater than another.

When they finally reached the top...

Kael stopped before the doorway.

Millions of glowing names slowly flowed around the arch like rivers of silver light.

He could almost hear them whispering.

Not words.

Lives.

Laughter.

Promises.

Songs.

Goodbyes.

Every forgotten soul still had a voice.

Kael gently raised the wooden key.

The living wood reshaped itself.

Tiny roots extended from the key before intertwining with the countless glowing names forming the doorway.

The lock...

Didn't click.

It bloomed.

White flowers blossomed across the entire archway.

One by one.

Until every glowing name had been surrounded by living petals.

The doorway slowly opened.

Warm light poured outward.

Kael expected another ancient chamber.

Another forgotten ruin.

Instead...

He saw a city.

Not the restored city of the Garden.

Not the underground prison.

An ordinary city.

Stone streets.

Small houses.

Market stalls.

Children chasing each other through narrow alleys.

Bakers placing fresh bread into windows.

Blacksmiths hammering horseshoes.

Old women chatting beside wells.

Everything looked...

Normal.

The only strange thing...

Was that no one seemed able to see them.

People walked past the doorway without reacting.

A little girl ran directly through its light while laughing after her brother.

Neither noticed Kael.

Neither noticed Eli.

The little boy looked completely confused.

"Where are we?"

Kael slowly stepped through the doorway.

The air smelled of fresh bread and rain.

A church bell rang somewhere beyond the marketplace.

Dogs barked happily in distant streets.

Everything felt real.

The Traveler's voice suddenly echoed from nowhere.

"Welcome..."

It carried both pride and sorrow.

"...to the Hall of Forgotten Names."

Kael frowned.

"This is a city."

"It was."

The unseen voice answered quietly.

"Every forgotten world appears here exactly as it wished to be remembered."

Kael slowly looked around.

The baker smiled while handing bread to a laughing child.

A young couple argued playfully while decorating a tiny garden.

An old man carefully repaired a broken toy for his grandson.

No one noticed the approaching sunset.

No one realized...

Their world no longer existed.

Eli clutched Kael's sleeve.

"They're..."

His voice trembled.

"...happy."

The Traveler answered softly.

"Because they don't remember how they died."

Silence followed.

Kael's chest tightened painfully.

Every person here...

Belonged to a civilization erased by the Watcher.

Yet the World Tree had preserved their happiest memories.

Not as prisoners.

As a final kindness.

The street ahead suddenly became quiet.

A little girl no older than six stood alone in the middle of the road.

She held a wooden bird in her hands.

The carving looked strangely familiar.

She slowly turned toward Kael.

Unlike everyone else...

She could see him.

Her bright green eyes widened.

Then...

She smiled.

"You came."

Kael froze.

The little girl gently held up the wooden bird.

"I've been waiting to give this back."

She carefully placed the carving into Kael's hands.

His fingers trembled.

He recognized every cut.

Every tiny imperfection.

Every carefully carved feather.

He had made it.

Three thousand years ago.

The little girl smiled warmly.

"You promised..."

Her voice remained as innocent as spring rain.

"...that someday you would remember all of us."

The peaceful city around them suddenly rang with countless church bells.

Not one.

Not ten.

Thousands.

Every forgotten city hidden within the Hall of Forgotten Names had begun ringing at the same moment.

And somewhere beyond those endless echoes...

A familiar ancient voice whispered with quiet approval.

"The Third Lock has begun to open."
