Chapter 223 - Chapter 223: The Bell Beyond the Watcher

The lonely bell continued ringing somewhere beyond the endless darkness.

Its sound was soft.

Gentle.

Almost fragile.

Yet every ancient being standing upon the observation platform immediately recognized it. The First Son's golden eyes widened ever so slightly before he turned toward the impossible void beyond the Door. The stranger lowered his ancient book as though he had forgotten he was holding it, while even the Sleeper—whose calm had remained unshaken through the collapse of worlds—stood perfectly motionless. Throughout the underground city, countless silver bells answered the distant sound with quiet chimes of their own, creating a harmony that spread across crystal rivers, elegant bridges, towering observatories, and flowering gardens reclaimed from thousands of years of silence.

Kael looked from one ancient being to another before finally asking the question no one seemed willing to voice.

"You know that bell."

The smiling figure slowly nodded.

Its expression had become strangely distant.

"I know the one who rang it."

Silence followed.

The words carried an unbearable weight.

Far beyond the widening crack, the Watcher's endless black eyes remained fixed upon the underground city, yet it made no attempt to interrupt the sound. It simply watched while the gentle ringing continued drifting through the darkness. Around those impossible eyes, fragments of forgotten worlds floated like scattered leaves caught within an invisible current. Broken mountains, shattered oceans, and ruined cities slowly revolved through the void before fading into silver dust. Yet the lonely bell endured, echoing across a place where nothing should have survived.

The First Son released a slow breath before speaking.

"That's impossible."

The smiling figure looked toward him with quiet sadness.

"I thought so too."

The stranger slowly closed his eyes.

"It should have been destroyed."

"It should have."

Another bell echoed from the darkness.

Then another.

This time the sound was slightly clearer.

Not louder.

Closer.

Kael frowned.

"Who is it?"

The smiling figure hesitated.

For the first time since Kael had met the ancient being, it seemed genuinely reluctant to answer.

Finally, it spoke.

"The Fifth."

The underground city became completely silent.

Even the rivers flowing beneath transparent streets appeared to slow.

Kael stared.

"There were five brothers?"

"No."

The First Son answered immediately.

"There were only four."

The smiling figure quietly continued.

"But there was a fifth guardian."

The explanation unsettled everyone.

The Sleeper slowly turned toward the endless darkness beyond the Door while thousands of silver chains drifted around the ancient throne like living streams of moonlight.

"He refused."

Those two words echoed softly across the prison.

Kael looked toward the Sleeper.

"Refused what?"

The ancient being remained silent for several moments before answering.

"He refused to leave."

Another bell rang beyond the Watcher.

This time...

The endless black eyes shifted.

Only slightly.

Yet the movement alone caused reality surrounding the crack to ripple violently. Ancient chains trembled while countless runes engraved across the prison flared with silver light. The Watcher wasn't looking toward the city anymore.

It was looking behind itself.

The realization stunned everyone.

Something beyond even the Watcher had drawn its attention.

The smiling figure slowly smiled.

Not with amusement.

With hope.

"I knew you wouldn't abandon your post."

The black mark upon Kael's arm suddenly burned with unfamiliar warmth.

Another memory surfaced.

He found himself standing upon an enormous white bridge stretching above an endless sea of clouds. Four brothers stood together near the center, while a fifth figure leaned casually against the stone railing overlooking the horizon.

Unlike the others...

He wasn't extraordinary in appearance.

He wore simple gray robes.

Dark hair moved gently in the wind.

His face carried an easy smile untouched by worry or responsibility.

He looked...

Ordinary.

The fifth guardian laughed as the First Son argued with the stranger over another architectural design.

"You three will debate until the stars burn out."

The fourth brother grinned.

"Probably."

The fifth guardian turned toward Kael.

"And you'll let them."

Kael's ancient self smiled.

"They enjoy it."

The fifth guardian looked toward the distant horizon where countless stars shimmered beneath an endless sky.

"I wonder..."

His voice became unusually quiet.

"...if someone is protecting the worlds beyond ours."

The memory dissolved before anyone answered.

Reality returned.

Kael inhaled sharply.

The question lingered inside his mind.

Someone...

Protecting the worlds beyond theirs.

Far beyond the Door, the lonely bell rang again.

This time...

A faint light appeared within the endless darkness.

Small.

No larger than a distant star.

Yet unlike every broken world drifting through the void...

This light moved.

Slowly.

Steadily.

Toward the Watcher.

The smiling figure's eyes filled with quiet relief.

"He's still walking."

The First Son smiled for the first time in countless centuries.

"So..."

The ancient warrior folded his arms.

"You really survived."

The tiny light continued approaching through the darkness.

The Watcher's endless gaze remained fixed upon it.

For the first time since its appearance...

The impossible being did not watch Kael.

It watched someone else.

And somewhere deep within its ancient mechanism...

The sound of a key slowly turning echoed across existence.
