Chapter 149 - Chapter 149: The Gathering Before the Storm

The next morning, Upper Adaptation Sector Seven felt more like a military command center than part of an academy.

Kael noticed it immediately.

The sector sat far above the normal academy districts near the western edge of the floating structures, isolated behind multiple barrier gates and guarded by upper instructors wearing combat insignias rather than ordinary academy uniforms.

Restricted.

Important.

Dangerous.

The moment Kael stepped through the final checkpoint alongside Lyra, Aren, Draven, and Cyrion, he saw dozens of elite students already gathered inside the enormous circular training chamber ahead.

And every single one of them carried pressure.

Not ordinary upper students.

The strongest.

The chamber itself resembled a war room mixed with an arena:

- tactical projection tables floated across the center,

- unstable mana maps rotated above suspended platforms,

- combat sectors surrounded the outer walls,

- and enormous barrier formations covered the ceiling like layered stars.

Aren looked around nervously. "…I feel underqualified to breathe here."

"You probably are," Lyra replied calmly.

"Cruel."

Several students glanced toward Kael immediately as the group entered.

Not subtle curiosity anymore.

Recognition.

After the assembly yesterday, rumors surrounding him had spread through every upper district of the academy.

Some whispered he survived direct instability exposure.

Others believed the Headmaster personally protected him during the breach.

A few even claimed he stood at the center of the catastrophe itself.

Ironically—

None of those were fully wrong.

Selene stood near one of the tactical projections already, golden eyes immediately shifting toward Kael the moment he entered.

Beside her:

- Elaris remained calm as always,

- Maerin reviewed projection reports quietly,

- several noble heirs observed the room carefully,

- and elite upper combat students spoke in low tactical discussions.

The atmosphere carried tension beneath discipline.

Because everyone here understood:

they weren't gathered for ordinary training anymore.

Then the chamber doors sealed behind them.

Silence spread instantly.

General Caelan entered first.

The military commander crossed the chamber calmly while silver tactical projections activated overhead one after another displaying unstable regions across the continent surrounding the academy.

And suddenly—

Kael understood.

The instability problem outside was far worse than students realized.

Entire regions glowed red across the projections:

- corrupted forests,

- abandoned border sectors,

- unstable mana storms,

- missing cities.

Aren stared upward blankly. "…That seems catastrophically bad."

"No exaggeration detected," Draven replied quietly.

Then the Headmaster appeared beside the central projection platform.

The room straightened immediately.

Even the elite upper students became visibly sharper beneath the old man's presence.

The Headmaster's gaze moved across the chamber slowly.

"You were selected because you adapted faster than others during recent instability events."

Direct.

No unnecessary ceremony.

"Beginning today, Upper Adaptation Sector Seven will operate separately from standard academy divisions."

Interesting.

Very interesting.

The projection above them shifted again.

A map of the continent expanded overhead while multiple glowing instability zones appeared across its surface.

"The distortions are spreading beyond prediction models."

General Caelan stepped forward calmly.

"Several border nations have already lost containment sectors."

Silence filled the chamber instantly.

Because this was no longer theoretical danger.

Entire nations were struggling.

The general continued:

"Military divisions alone cannot suppress the expansion permanently."

Another projection activated:

unstable creatures attacking fortified regions,

destroyed settlements,

collapsed mana barriers.

Kael noticed how differently the students reacted now compared to earlier assembly discussions.

These elite students weren't panicking.

They were evaluating.

Analyzing.

Preparing.

Then the Headmaster spoke again quietly.

"The academy can no longer remain isolated from the world outside."

That statement mattered enormously.

For generations, the academy stood above nations politically neutral while producing elites for every kingdom and race across the continent.

But now—

Neutrality itself was weakening.

The Headmaster raised one hand.

Another projection appeared overhead.

This time:

other continents.

Massive landmasses beyond the known academy territories rotated slowly through the air while multiple political symbols illuminated across them.

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

Finally.

The larger world beyond the academy.

The Headmaster continued calmly:

"The instability is not limited to this continent."

The chamber became perfectly silent.

"Elven territories in the western forests have reported ancient ruins awakening."

"Beast-human kingdoms near the southern mountains face expanding corrupted zones."

"Dwarven underground cities detected unstable fractures beneath deep mining sectors."

One by one—

the world expanded before them.

Not just humans.

Every race.

Every nation.

Every continent.

Affected.

Selene crossed her arms lightly while studying the projections carefully.

"…So the entire world is entering adaptation."

General Caelan nodded once.

"Yes."

Aren looked deeply distressed. "…I preferred normal school politics."

"You hated normal school politics too," Lyra reminded him.

"That was before global catastrophe entered the curriculum."

Fair.

Then unexpectedly—

The projection shifted again.

A new symbol appeared across the northern continent.

Ancient.

Black-and-gold.

Kael's breathing sharpened instantly.

The same symbol as the gate.

Several instructors noticed immediately.

The Headmaster's gaze shifted briefly toward him.

"Three weeks ago," the old man said quietly, "an instability event occurred beyond the northern frozen territories."

The projection expanded.

A massive crater surrounded by unstable storms appeared overhead.

"At the center," the Headmaster continued, "investigators discovered ancient ruins carrying the same markings found beneath this academy."

Silence.

Kael felt the dormant mark on his hand pulse faintly beneath the glove.

Not pain.

Recognition.

General Caelan's expression darkened.

"We believe the gate beneath the academy is not unique."

That sentence changed everything.

Aren blinked slowly. "…There are MORE?"

"No confirmed active gates," the general replied.

"Yet."

That final word echoed heavily through the chamber.

Because now everyone understood the real danger.

The academy wasn't guarding the only seal.

Probably just the oldest.

Then suddenly—

The chamber doors opened again.

Several new figures entered.

And immediately—

the atmosphere changed.

Not instructors.

Nobles.

Representatives from different races and nations:

- an elven woman wearing silver forest insignias,

- a heavily armored beast-human warrior with black fur and golden eyes,

- a dwarf elder carrying rune-covered gauntlets,

- and several human nobles from distant kingdoms.

Political envoys.

Powerful ones.

Kael noticed something important immediately.

They weren't looking at the room generally.

They were looking at him.

The beast-human representative spoke first, voice deep and controlled.

"…So the next bearer truly awakened."

The chamber tightened instantly.

Aren whispered weakly:

"…I hate that title."

The elven woman's silver eyes narrowed slightly toward Kael.

"…And he interrupted synchronization?"

Interesting.

Meaning:

the information had already spread beyond the academy internally.

The Headmaster answered calmly.

"Yes."

The representatives exchanged brief looks afterward.

Not fear.

Hope.

Real hope.

The dwarf elder finally spoke next.

"…Then perhaps the cycle can finally end."

Again.

That phrase.

The chain.

The cycle.

The inheritance.

Everyone important seemed to fear it deeply.

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You all knew about the bearers?"

The room fell silent briefly.

Then the Headmaster answered quietly.

"For longer than you realize."

Of course.

The great nations and races of the world had likely built entire histories around the gates and seals.

Hidden histories.

Then suddenly—

The dormant mark on Kael's hand pulsed harder.

Everyone nearby noticed immediately.

The chamber lights flickered.

The tactical projections distorted briefly.

And somewhere deep beneath the academy—

Something answered.

Not the gate opening.

Just movement.

Awareness.

The Headmaster's expression sharpened instantly.

"…Interesting."

Aren nearly screamed. "…STOP SAYING THAT WORD."

But nobody laughed.

Because Kael realized something terrifying at that moment.

The gate below the academy had closed.

But it was still listening.

And now—

So were the others.
