Genevieve's POV
My scream erupted from somewhere deep inside me, raw and desperate, bouncing off the stone walls and returning in broken pieces. The sound hung in the darkness for what felt like an eternity before dissolving into nothing.
I clamped my jaw shut as the echo faded, my body trembling as the magical energy collapsed inward, leaving me feeling hollowed out and burned from the inside.
"Kaelen!"
His name cracked as it left my throat.
"Kaelen! Answer me!"
The silence stretched endlessly. Only my ragged breathing and the distant drip of water somewhere in the shadows.
"This isn't what you promised me!" My voice pitched higher, breaking with fury and desperation. I despised how weak I sounded. "Kaelen!"
Nothing. Not even the whisper of movement.
