Chapter 3 - Protest

Unlucky was the word that described my existence. As I stared frozen in horror at the skeleton of an innocent man whom I had murdered, I wept until the heavy rain subsided. I have been turned into a man-eating vampire and occupied the body of a dead man.

"Have I not suffered enough!" Diego yelled to the stars.

"After years of misery, instead of being rewarded with happiness and peace, I have been cursed, my humanity stripped by a god, a mad god. To cause so much pain to me, what did I ever do to you?" He mumbled, his voice filled with agony.

Diego got up and shakily walked back to the tombstone he came out of. The skeleton and the terror on the man's face would be forever etched into his memories. He inspected the tombstone, but there was nothing out of the ordinary.

Diego took off his tuxedo, as it was covered in blood, and placed it on the ground, piling dirt on it. The man who once had this body was forever gone; he was now to be laid to rest.

The mad god had cursed him and taken everything from him but one thing, which was his freedom. He was still Diego, and he would damn if he was to lose control like that ever again.

'Am I still in my world? It seems to resemble Earth, though I have little knowledge of what it looks like except through television and the hospital windows. It would be in my best interest to explore, but first, I must test my powers. It's clear that I'm superhuman, but what other vampire abilities do I have? Wait..does that mean I'm immortal?'

Diego wanted to test this theory out, so he sharpened his nails and slash it through his forearm, biting through the pain and creating a vertical line that oozed blood, but in just five seconds, the wound was fully healed.

This fascinated Diego to the point where he spent twenty minutes straight creating varying degrees of wounds all over his body and watching as each healed in around five seconds to one second, depending on the injury, with amazement.

'Superhuman physicality and high-speed regeneration checked. If my body has been boosted, what about my senses?'

As Diego was about to hone in on his sense of smell, he suddenly felt a draw to his blood that had dripped down on the ground from his injuries.

'Could it be?'

He raised his right arm, and all the blood came off the ground. Diego's eyebrows rose in shock, and then he let go, making all the blood drop.

'I have blood manipulation as well.'

There was a lot he could do with blood manipulation; for example, he could capture people using his blood, create sharp arrows, and maybe even control other people's bodies using their own blood, though he would never do that unless it was necessary.

He also didn't have the inherent weakness with blood manipulation, which was dying due to having a low amount of blood from using it, as he could just regenerate any blood he lost quickly.

So all in all, it was a massive benefit; it's starting to look like he isn't just any ordinary vampire. Though he was still going to be very cautious, it would be idiotic of him to get a big head just because of his powers; he didn't know how dangerous this world was, and whether this power was even really his.

The mad god that most likely turned him into a vampire and sent his soul into this body could take it away at any point for his amusement. It caused him great anger, but as of right now, he was just a pawn in his story.

He would break out of this cell, surely, but he hasn't a clue how. Diego went back to honing in on his senses, and then he smelled blood that wasn't his. The scent was coming from three miles south.

He saw a group of twelve people gathered around in a industrial like zone. They all had on different-colored helmets that matched the worker-type uniform they wore, and had their faces mostly covered with cloth masks.

The group of people was each equipped with different types of weapons, mostly axes and wooden bats with spikes, but a few had a Molotov cocktail. They held up a massive sign that read, you don't belong in our country, freaks.

In front of them was an injured duo of non human like creature. Diego didn't know what to call them, so he labeled them mutants. The mutant duo consists of a half-crab, half-man thing that had small cracks over its upper body shell and a female human with whiskers who was desperately pleading for the other group to stop as snot and tears dripped down her face.

Diego was conflicted on what he should do; having been sheltered for all his life, his decision-making skills were severely lacking. Yes, he did have some form of education, but it was nothing compared to actually going to school. So he stood there with his fingers on his chin and contemplated as the helmet group slowly advanced towards the mutant groups.

'Should I save them? It's the right thing to do, but I don't know the situation fully.'

He scratched the back of his head frantically, wishing that his caretakers were here to help him make the decision. He was finally granted the freedom to do what he wanted, yet he didn't know what he truly wanted; his sense of self was nonexistent.

Sigh

'Ahh, why is it so hard to pick? I think the best choice would be to get closer and observe, so I can get more information on what's going on.'

Diego went into a full sprint, even going faster than he was before, which intrigued him, but he put it at the back of his mind, as he was more focused on the protest. Within one minute and forty-eight seconds, he crossed the distance running at a speed of one hundred miles per hour.
