Chapter 19 - CHAPTER 18 - The One Who Stood Between

There was no sound.

No wind.

No birds.

No distant voices.

Only water.

Endless black water.

Far beneath the surface of the Mournvale Sea, a body remained motionless.

Lucifell.

His armor was shattered.

His Light Bearer lay broken beside him.

Fragments of his mask drifted slowly through the darkness.

His silver-white hair floated around his face like pale threads.

And yet...

his heart still beat.

Once.

...

Twice.

...

Then...

THUM.

A pulse travelled through the ocean.

The darkness surrounding his body moved.

Purple lightning crawled across the broken armor.

It gathered around his wings.

Then disappeared beneath his skin.

For several seconds...

nothing happened.

Then Lucifell's fingers moved.

Slowly.

His hand closed.

His eyes opened.

One remained blue.

The other...

violet.

He stared into the darkness above him.

There was no panic.

No confusion.

Only silence.

Then a voice whispered inside his mind.

"Rise."

Lucifell closed his eyes.

Another voice followed.

"Remember."

Another.

"Become."

The darkness began wrapping around him.

His broken armor shifted.

Black energy poured from the cracks.

His wings expanded.

Purple lightning erupted through the water.

And behind him...

something appeared.

A gigantic shadow.

Two enormous wings.

A horned silhouette.

A crown-like shape formed from darkness.

"The Dark Sovereign."

It stood behind Lucifell like an ancient king waiting for its vessel.

Its voice entered his mind.

"You have suffered enough."

Lucifell remained silent.

"You have lost everything."

His eyes opened.

"Heaven rejected you."

A pause.

"The mortal world used you."

Another.

"She is gone."

Lucifell's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But the darkness noticed.

"You have nothing left to protect."

The shadow moved closer.

"Give yourself to me."

Lucifell slowly looked toward the enormous silhouette.

For centuries...

he had fought it.

For years...

he had feared it.

And now...

he finally understood.

The voice wasn't unfamiliar.

It wasn't another creature.

It wasn't some demon hiding inside his soul.

It was...

him.

The hatred.

The grief.

The anger.

The loneliness.

The instinct to survive.

The desire to destroy everything that had hurt him.

The part of himself he had spent so long trying to bury.

Lucifell slowly raised his hand.

The darkness gathered around his palm.

Then...

he closed his fingers.

The Shadow of The Dark Sovereign stopped.

"Why do you resist?"

Lucifell finally spoke.

His voice was quiet.

Almost exhausted.

"...I'm not."

Silence.

The ocean trembled.

The darkness surrounding him suddenly stopped moving.

Lucifell looked toward the shadow.

"You were never something I needed to destroy."

The violet eye burned brighter.

"You were something I refused to understand."

The Shadow of The Dark Sovereign remained motionless.

Lucifell slowly looked down at his own chest.

The golden seal left by Luciel still remained there.

Cracked.

Weak.

But glowing.

He remembered her voice.

Eden was never just a place.

Lucifell closed his eyes.

Then remembered another voice.

The voices of mortals.

Their fear.

Their laughter.

Their hatred.

Their love.

Their grief.

Their hope.

Everything he had felt after being cast down.

Everything Heaven had considered weakness.

Everything the Primordials considered corruption.

He finally understood.

Light had never existed without darkness.

And darkness had never existed without light.

They were not two opposing worlds.

They were two halves of the same existence.

Heaven feared darkness.

The Underworld worshipped it.

Mortals feared both.

But Lucifell...

stood between them.

The Shadow of The Dark Sovereign moved closer.

This time...

Lucifell did not resist.

The darkness entered his body.

Purple lightning exploded through the sea.

His black wings expanded outward.

The shattered armor reconstructed itself piece by piece.

The cracks remained.

But beneath them...

golden light appeared.

Not replacing the darkness.

Coexisting with it.

White.

Black.

Gold.

Violet.

All of it flowed through the same body.

Lucifell opened his eyes.

Both were different now.

One carried the cold blue of Heaven.

The other carried the violet of abyss.

Yet neither dominated.

They simply existed.

Together.

The enormous shadow behind him slowly disappeared.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

Accepted.

Lucifell reached toward the broken Light Bearer.

His fingers touched the shattered blade.

The sword remained silent.

He looked at it for several seconds.

Then...

he smiled.

Barely.

"You were never meant to carry me alone."

A strange vibration passed through the broken sword.

The fragments slowly began floating.

Not repairing.

Not yet.

But responding.

Lucifell stood.

The water around him suddenly began moving away.

A massive pressure erupted from his body.

The sea floor cracked beneath his feet.

Far above...

the ocean surface trembled.

Storm clouds gathered over Mournvale.

Purple lightning flashed across the sky.

But something was different.

There was no rage behind it.

No uncontrollable destruction.

No Primordial command.

The energy obeyed him.

Lucifell slowly spread his wings.

The black feathers opened.

Golden light flowed between them.

He looked upward.

And for the first time since his fall...

he did not see Heaven.

He did not see Hell.

He did not see Earth.

He simply saw...

the world.

A world that had hurt him.

A world that had changed him.

A world that had given him something Heaven never could.

Choice.

Lucifell whispered:

"...I understand."

The ocean became silent.

Then...

his wings moved.

BOOM.

The sea exploded upward.

A colossal column of water erupted toward the storming sky.

And from within it...

something emerged.

Not an angel.

Not a demon.

Not a Primordial.

Not the monster the world had feared.

A man.

Wearing the darkness he once rejected...

and carrying the light he never truly lost.

Lucifell landed upon the surface of the sea.

Rain struck his armor.

His silver-white hair covered part of his face.

His remaining mask was cracked.

His violet eye glowed beneath it.

For several seconds...

he simply stood there.

Then he looked toward the distant coastline.

Toward Mournvale.

Toward the people waiting for him.

His hand tightened.

The darkness answered.

The light answered too.

Neither fought the other.

They moved together.

Lucifell slowly raised his head.

And somewhere beneath the storm...

something ancient felt him awaken.

Something watching from beyond the world whispered:

"...The vessel has awakened."

Another voice answered:

"No."

A pause.

"The vessel is no longer empty."

Lucifell's eyes narrowed.

The storm above him turned purple.

Then...

a faint golden light appeared inside the darkness.

He took one step forward.

And the sea parted beneath his feet.

To be continued.
