Chapter 36 - Chapter Thirty-Six: Strength in the Spotlight

The morning sun spilled across the mansion, golden and bright, but Alicia barely noticed. She was already at her desk, sketchbook open, pencils and fabric swatches scattered around her. Today was the first day of the official competition, and though the plagiarism accusations had been cleared, the tension hadn't left her entirely.

Michael entered quietly, carrying a coffee. He set it down beside her without a word, letting the warmth between them speak instead.

"You ready for this?" he asked softly, leaning against the desk.

Alicia looked up, determination in her eyes. "As ready as I'll ever be. I just… hope I can prove myself."

"You will," he said, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. His fingers lingered just long enough to make her pulse quicken. "And you won't be doing it alone."

She smiled faintly, the reassurance grounding her.

Meanwhile, across the mansion, Sophie and Adrian were tidying up the guest wing, boxes, and bags from their recent move scattered around.

"So," Sophie said, leaning against Adrian as he lifted a small lamp into place, "living together… feels different than I imagined."

Adrian shrugged, his hand brushing against hers as he adjusted the lamp. "It's… good. Comfortable. And no one's rushing us."

Sophie laughed softly, glancing at him. "I like this. Us. Step by step."

"Exactly," Adrian said, fingers tightening around hers. "Step by step."

Their eyes met, and in that shared gaze, both of them knew this was more than just convenience it was the start of something lasting.

Back in the studio, Alicia's father appeared quietly in the doorway, concern etched across his face.

"Dad," she whispered, standing to greet him.

He embraced her tightly, the years of distance and worry melting away. "I had to come," he said, voice low. "After everything… I wanted to make sure you knew I'm here. That I believe in you."

Alicia's eyes glistened with gratitude. "I needed that," she admitted. "More than you know."

He stepped back, offering her a reassuring smile. "No one, no one can take away what's yours. Not your talent. Not your name. Not your heart."

She nodded, feeling more centered than she had in weeks.

Later that afternoon, the competition hall buzzed with activity. Designers moved quickly, models adjusted their outfits, and judges murmured amongst themselves. Alicia stepped in with Michael by her side, her confidence bolstered by his presence, her father's support, and the knowledge that Sophie and Adrian were cheering her on from home.

"You look calm," Michael observed quietly, his hand brushing hers as they walked through the hall.

"I feel… ready," Alicia admitted, fingers tightening around his. "I've waited too long to let fear decide for me."

He smiled, leaning in to whisper against her ear. "Good. Because the world is about to see exactly who you are."

Her heart fluttered, not from nerves, but from him his nearness, his quiet support, the unspoken intimacy that always seemed to anchor her.

Across the hall, Daniel stood near the judges' table, laptop open, tracking unusual activity. His eyes flicked to a set of encrypted messages a sign that the enemy was already monitoring Alicia, hoping to exploit her again to get to Michael.

He made a note silently: "Step one: intercept. Step two: neutralize."

The competition began, each designer presenting their work, but Alicia's line of designs drew immediate attention. The judges leaned closer, whispers rippling through the crowd.

Michael stood nearby, his protective presence unmistakable. When a rival designer tried to approach Alicia with condescending remarks, he subtly shifted his stance, a quiet warning that she wasn't alone.

Alicia exhaled slowly, feeling the familiar warmth of his support. Later, during a quiet moment backstage, Michael pulled her into a gentle embrace.

"You've got this," he murmured, fingers brushing her hair. "And after today… nothing can touch you."

Alicia smiled against his chest. "I hope so."

Their lips met in a soft, lingering kiss, full of the intimacy they'd built over months. Not hurried, not desperate, just closeness, trust, and love.

And as they pulled apart, Alicia's resolve solidified. She would win, not just for herself, but for everyone who had stood by her.

Outside the hall, unseen by anyone, the enemy's gaze was calculating, sharp. They knew Michael's weakness had been revealed they would not give up so easily.

Daniel, however, was already steps ahead, eyes narrowing. "I see you," he murmured into his headset. "And I'm coming for you."

Inside, Alicia smiled faintly at Michael, her hand finding his again. Together, they were stronger. Together, they could face anything.

And for the first time in weeks, she truly believed it.
