Chapter 43 - Chapter 40: When it Stops Outside

They didn't stop running.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor, too loud, too fast, too real. Noah's breathing grew uneven, his chest tight as the image of that student burned in his mind.

That smile.

Wrong.

Completely wrong.

"Don't look back," Kai said sharply.

"I'm not," Noah replied, though every instinct told him to.

Kunle moved ahead now, leading. "We need distance first. Then we think."

Distance.

From what?

Noah didn't ask.

Because he already knew—

This wasn't just in his head anymore.

They turned a corner, then another, cutting through a stairwell and into a lower hallway. The noise of the upper floor faded, replaced by a heavier silence.

Too quiet.

They stopped.

Not because they were safe—

But because they needed to understand.

Noah bent slightly, catching his breath. "That… that wasn't normal."

Kai shook her head. "No."

Kunle's eyes scanned the hallway. "It shouldn't be able to do that."

"Do what?" Noah asked.

"Manifest correlation," Kunle said.

Noah frowned. "Speak normally."

Kunle exhaled. "It shouldn't appear outside your perception."

My chest tightened.

"But I saw it," Noah said.

Kai nodded slowly. "So did I."

Silence.

That was worse.

Because if only Noah saw it—

It could be dismissed.

But now—

It was shared.

Real.

Another thought slipped in.

You're expanding.

Noah reacted instantly. "No."

The thought broke.

But it left something behind.

A feeling.

Like something stretching.

Kai noticed his expression. "What?"

"It said I'm expanding."

Kunle went still.

"That's not good."

Noah almost laughed. "Nothing about this is good."

"No," Kunle said quietly. "You don't understand."

Noah frowned. "Then explain."

Kunle hesitated—

Then said it anyway.

"If it's expanding… then it's not just adapting to you."

A pause.

"It's using you."

My stomach dropped.

"Using me for what?"

Kai answered.

"Access."

Silence hit hard.

Because that made sense.

Too much sense.

Another thought formed—

Slower now.

Careful.

You opened the door.

Noah clenched his fists.

"No, I didn't."

But the thought lingered.

Because—

He had engaged.

He had questioned.

He had listened.

Even if only a little.

Kunle spoke again. "That thing back there…"

Noah looked at him.

"What about it?"

Kunle's voice lowered. "It reacted to you."

My chest tightened.

"You mean… it knew me?"

Kai shook her head slightly. "Not you."

Noah frowned. "Then what?"

She held his gaze.

"The connection."

Silence.

Everything slowed.

Because that meant—

It wasn't just watching anymore.

It was reaching.

Another whisper.

Closer.

Clearer.

"…you see now…"

Noah's breath caught.

It wasn't distant anymore.

Not faint.

Right there.

Present.

"I hear it again," he said.

Kai nodded. "So do I."

Kunle's expression darkened. "It's stronger here."

"Why?" Noah asked.

No answer.

Then—

A realization hit.

Not forced.

Built.

Slow.

"This place…" Noah said quietly.

"What about it?" Kai asked.

He looked around.

Empty hallway.

Closed doors.

No one else.

"It followed us."

Silence.

Then—

"No," Kunle said.

Noah looked at him.

"It didn't follow," Kunle corrected.

"It arrived."

My chest tightened.

That distinction—

That was worse.

Much worse.

Another thought appeared.

Simple.

Clear.

Step outside.

Noah froze.

That—

That didn't feel like a mental suggestion.

It felt… directional.

Physical.

Kai's voice came sharp. "What did it say?"

Noah didn't move.

"It told me to step outside."

Kunle swore under his breath.

"Don't."

"I'm not—"

"…just one step…"

The whisper came again.

Not just in his head.

In the air.

Around him.

Noah's pulse spiked.

That was new.

That had never happened before.

"It's externalizing," Kai said.

"No kidding," Noah muttered.

But something pulled at him.

Not physically—

But instinctively.

Like his body wanted to respond.

Just one step.

That's all.

His foot shifted—

Barely.

But enough.

Kai grabbed his arm instantly.

"Noah."

The contact snapped something.

His awareness surged back.

"No."

He stepped back instead.

Hard.

Breaking the pull.

The whisper stopped.

Abruptly.

Silence slammed into the hallway.

Heavy.

Thick.

Then—

A sound.

From behind them.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Noah's chest locked.

They all turned.

At the far end of the hallway—

The same student stood there.

Closer now.

Much closer.

Head tilted again.

Smile unchanged.

Unnatural.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…better…"

The voice whispered.

Noah's pulse pounded.

Because this time—

It wasn't just inside.

It was everywhere.

Kai's grip tightened on his arm.

"We leave. Now."

Kunle didn't argue.

They turned—

Started moving again.

Faster.

But this time—

Noah understood something clearly.

It wasn't chasing them.

It didn't need to.

Because distance didn't matter anymore.

Not when the connection had already crossed the line.

And as they ran—

One final thought settled quietly in his mind.

Not forced.

Not perfect.

But terrifying all the same.

If it can step outside…

Then where does it stop?
