Martha Grey realized her mistake sometime around midnight. I knew this because Lucas received a series of text messages at increasingly frantic intervals while he sat in his study pretending not to be traumatized by the events of the day. I found him the next morning with dark circles under his eyes and his phone face down on the desk like he could not bear to look at it anymore.
"She has been texting all night," he said, his voice flat and exhausted. "Apologies and explanations and more apologies. She wants to make things right."
"That is good, is it not. She understands now."
"She wants to apologize to everyone. Not just me and not just you. Everyone who witnessed her assumption. Sophie and Kevin and Marlene. She has made a list."
I stared at him. "She made a list of people to apologize to."
