Chapter 110: THE PRICE OF PROTECTION
I listen to his message three times.
The first time I listen for information. The second time I listen for the thing underneath the information, the specific frequency of my brother's voice when he is saying something true versus something he has decided to say because it is necessary. The third time I listen because I am not ready for it to be over yet and three times feels like the number I need before I can let the recording finish and remain finished.
By the third time, everyone else has drifted from the kitchen. Aria is somewhere with Dominic. Sebastian has taken himself to the far end of the estate with the tactful discretion he has been deploying with increasing consistency since the morning at the ridge. Eleanor's kitchen settles into the particular quiet of a room that has held something enormous and is now simply holding its ordinary self again.
