CHAPTER 61 THE FIRST CHILD
I say to Arthur, 'You are lying. You are lying to save your skin,'" and the barrel of my gun moves up and down as cold sweat drips into my eyes.
Arthur takes a breath that sounds all wet and rattly, and his chest sinks against the edge of his desk.
"Do you really think I would make something like this up now?" Arthur asks me quietly.
Ariana snaps at him.
"After everything you have done? Yes, I do."
Arthur's jaw gets a little tighter.
"Look at the screen, Ariana. Look at the records from ninety-five if you think my ledger is fake," Arthur says.
Ariana yells from the doorway, "We do not have a brother," and her boots slam against the floor as she runs into the office. She does not have her tire iron anymore. Her hands are all covered in grease, and her face is twisted into a sharp, angry scowl.
