CHAPTER 48: SECRET IN THE JOURNAL
A voice came from the pillows.
"You think you can just leave me here and walk into the fire?"
I turned around fast. The bag in my hand made a noise in the quiet hospital room.
Dominic was staring at me with his eyes half closed. His face was pale. A dark bruise covered his jaw.
The heart monitor beside his bed beeped steadily. The sound filled the silence between us.
"Dominic," I said, my voice shaking.
I placed the bag on the table and rushed to his side. I wanted to touch him, but I did not know where it was safe.
"You are awake. Oh my God, you are awake."
"Barely," he muttered, his voice rough.
He tried to move and suddenly gasped in pain. His fingers dug hard into the mattress.
"The doctor said I have broken ribs," he said weakly. "Feels like an entire building collapsed on me."
