Chapter 50 - The first awakening

The ground didn't just crack.

It opened.

A violent rupture tore through the concrete beneath them, splitting the floor apart with a deafening roar. Dust and debris exploded upward, filling the air in thick clouds as the structure around them groaned under the sudden strain.

Kang Ji-hoon reacted instantly.

He pulled Seo-yeon back just as the crack widened, dragging her away from the collapsing edge.

"…Back!" he shouted.

But it was too late.

Whatever was beneath them—

Was already rising.

A deep, resonant sound echoed from below. Not quite a roar, not quite mechanical—something in between. It vibrated through the air, through the ground, through their bones.

Seo-yeon froze.

Her breath caught sharply.

"…It's here," she whispered.

Ji-hoon's eyes narrowed.

"…One of them."

The glow beneath the fractured ground intensified, spreading outward like veins of molten light. The crack widened further, chunks of concrete falling inward as something massive pushed up from below.

Adrian stepped back instinctively this time.

Even he—

Didn't underestimate this.

"…This is earlier than expected," he muttered.

Ji-hoon didn't respond.

His focus remained locked on the ground.

"…Seo-yeon," he said without looking at her, "…tell me what it's going to do."

She didn't answer immediately.

Because what she felt—

Wasn't clear.

"…It's not like the one before," she said slowly.

"…This one… feels more stable."

That wasn't reassuring.

"…Define stable," Ji-hoon said.

Her voice dropped.

"…Stronger."

The ground shattered completely.

With a violent explosion of debris, something surged upward, breaking through the floor and forcing everything around it to give way.

They saw it.

And for a moment—

No one spoke.

Because this—

Was different.

This wasn't a twisted, unstable mass like the first fragment.

This form—

Was structured.

Defined.

Tall—easily twice the height of a human—its body formed of layered, shifting surfaces that looked both metallic and organic at once. Lines of faint glowing energy ran across its frame, pulsing rhythmically like veins beneath a skin that wasn't entirely solid.

Its head—

If it could be called that—

Turned slowly.

And locked onto them.

More specifically—

Onto her.

Seo-yeon's chest tightened.

"…It sees me," she whispered.

Ji-hoon stepped slightly in front of her.

"…Then it goes through me first."

The creature moved.

Fast.

Despite its size, its movement was precise—controlled. One step forward cracked the ground beneath it, the impact sending a shockwave outward.

Ji-hoon reacted instantly.

"…Move!"

He pulled Seo-yeon aside just as the creature struck, its arm slamming into the ground where they had been standing. The impact shattered the concrete completely, sending fragments flying.

Seo-yeon stumbled slightly but regained her balance.

"…It's not attacking randomly," she said quickly.

Ji-hoon dodged another strike.

"…Yeah, I noticed!"

"…It's focused," she continued.

"…On me."

Another attack came—

Sharper.

More precise.

Ji-hoon barely blocked it, redirecting the impact as best as he could, but the force still sent him sliding back across the cracked floor.

"…This one's different," he muttered.

Behind them, Adrian spoke.

"…It's more complete," he said.

Ji-hoon shot him a look.

"…Meaning?"

"…Meaning it retained more of its original structure," Adrian replied.

"…Which makes it more dangerous."

That wasn't helpful.

The creature moved again.

This time—

Faster.

Its arm extended outward, shifting shape mid-motion as it lashed toward Seo-yeon with terrifying speed.

"…Seo-yeon!"

Ji-hoon moved without thinking, intercepting the attack and forcing it off course—but the impact still caught him partially, sending him crashing into the wall behind him.

"Ji-hoon!"

He hit hard.

Pain shot through his side—but he forced himself up immediately.

"…I'm fine!" he called.

But the creature didn't care about him.

It turned again.

Toward her.

Seo-yeon stood still this time.

Not frozen.

Not afraid.

Focused.

"…It's responding to me," she said quietly.

Ji-hoon pushed himself forward again.

"…Then make it stop!"

She didn't move.

"…I'm trying," she said.

Her eyes locked onto the creature.

The faint glow within them intensified slightly.

"…Stop," she said.

The creature paused.

For a split second.

Ji-hoon noticed it instantly.

"…You can control it!"

Seo-yeon's expression tightened.

"…No," she said.

"…Not control…"

The creature moved again.

"…Influence."

That was worse.

"…Then influence it harder!" Ji-hoon shouted.

Her breathing became uneven.

"…It's resisting," she said.

The creature stepped forward again.

Closer now.

The ground trembled beneath each movement.

"…It's not just responding to me," she continued.

"…It's responding to something else too."

Ji-hoon's expression hardened.

"…The directive."

She nodded.

"…It's trying to return."

The word echoed.

Return.

Ji-hoon clenched his fists.

"…Then we don't let it."

The creature attacked again.

This time—

Without hesitation.

Multiple strikes came at once, faster than before, forcing Ji-hoon to move constantly just to keep up.

Seo-yeon stepped back.

Her mind racing.

"…There has to be a way to override it," she whispered.

Behind her, Adrian spoke again.

"…There is."

She turned sharply.

"…What?"

His gaze was steady.

"…You increase your alignment," he said.

Ji-hoon snapped.

"…Absolutely not."

Adrian didn't react.

"…The more aligned you are," he continued, "…the stronger your influence becomes."

Seo-yeon's chest tightened.

"…And the cost?" she asked.

A pause.

"…You already know," Adrian said.

Silence.

Ji-hoon didn't even hesitate.

"…We're not doing that."

Seo-yeon looked between them.

Then back at the creature.

It was getting closer.

Stronger.

Faster.

Ji-hoon was holding it off—

But not for long.

Her fists clenched.

"…Ji-hoon," she said softly.

He didn't look at her.

"…Don't."

"…You're getting tired."

"…I'm fine."

Another strike—

This time, he didn't dodge completely.

It grazed him—

Hard.

Sending him stumbling back.

"…Ji-hoon!"

He caught himself, breathing heavier now.

"…Still fine," he said through clenched teeth.

But she could see it.

He couldn't keep this up.

"…I can end this," she said.

He shook his head immediately.

"…No."

"…If I go deeper—"

"No."

"…I can stop it—"

"NO."

Silence.

The creature stepped closer again.

Unstoppable.

Ji-hoon's breathing grew heavier.

"…We find another way," he said.

Seo-yeon looked at him.

And for a moment—

Her expression softened.

"…You always say that," she whispered.

"…Because I mean it," he replied.

The creature raised its arm again—

Preparing to strike.

Seo-yeon stepped forward.

Ji-hoon's eyes widened.

"…Seo-yeon—!"

Her voice came steady.

"…I won't lose myself."

The glow in her eyes intensified.

"…I promise."

And then—

She reached out again.
