Light swallowed him.
A pull, a twist, a sensation like being yanked through a thread of time—
And then Kai was standing on solid ground again.
The Clock Tower's upper chamber.
Varek, Leon, and Aika all jerked toward him at the same time.
Aika gasped.
Leon nearly dropped the lantern.
Varek's hand went straight to his sword.
"Kai?" Aika rushed forward, eyes wide. "You— you vanished! Are you hurt? Are you okay?"
Kai blinked, still adjusting to the sudden shift. "I… I think so."
Leon exhaled sharply. "Teleportation in novels is supposed to be majestic. You just popped in like a broken lightbulb. More importantly, are you fine?"
Kai nodded, though the weight in his chest hadn't faded. "Yeah. I'm fine. Just… overwhelmed."
Varek stepped closer, studying him with a calm, steady gaze. "You were gone for a while. What happened down there?"
Kai took a breath.
Then he told them everything.
The descent.
The impossible chamber.
The statues.
The founders.
The three questions.
The bloodline.
The Gears.
Chronomara.
He didn't embellish.
He didn't dramatize.
He simply spoke — and the more he said, the quieter the room became.
When he finished, silence settled over the group like dust.
Varek was the first to break it.
"A bloodline… and a covenant." He crossed his arms. "That means this wasn't random. Someone in your ancestry was tied to these founders."
Kai swallowed. "I know. I just… don't know who."
Varek nodded slowly. "We'll figure it out."
Aika stepped closer, her expression soft but worried. "Kai… are you sure you're okay? That place sounded dangerous. And the founders— they didn't hurt you, right?"
"No," Kai said. "They judged me. Tested me. But they didn't harm me."
Aika hesitated. "Did they… say anything about Alethya?"
Kai shook his head. "No. They didn't mention her."
Aika's shoulders fell slightly.
Leon let out a long breath. "Twelve Gears… two bloodlines… scattered across dimensions. This is insane. It's like we're living inside a lore bible."
He turned to Kai. "But seriously — you're not hurt? No dizziness? No missing limbs? No time dilation?"
Kai managed a small smile. "No missing limbs."
Leon snapped his fingers. "Good. Because if you came back with an extra arm, I'd have to rethink our entire friendship."
Aika elbowed him. "Leon."
"What? I'm coping."
Varek stepped forward again. "Then we'll study it together. Piece by piece."
Aika nodded. "And we'll keep you safe. Whatever this bloodline means… you're not dealing with it alone."
Leon pointed at Kai. "Yeah. If destiny wants to fight you, it has to get through us first."
Kai felt something loosen in his chest — a knot he hadn't realized was there.
He wasn't alone.
Not anymore.
Varek ruined the moment instantly.
"How exactly will you do this," he said flatly, "when you can't do anything."
Leon choked. "Bro— what is wrong with you."
Aika glared. "Varek!"
Kai blinked, stunned. "I—"
But the tower trembled violently, cutting him off.
A deep vibration rolled through the floor, dust drifting from the ceiling.
Varek's eyes narrowed. "Were you the one who caused these tremors moments ago?"
Kai shook his head. "No. I think… the space was closing."
Varek nodded once.
Aika exhaled. "At least it's over—"
It wasn't.
A distortion ripped open behind them — a ripple in the air like a tear in reality.
A Null stepped through, its pale, stretched form twisting unnaturally. Two elongated arms shot forward instantly — one toward Leon, one toward Aika.
Leon's eyes widened. "Oh come on— I didn't even get to finish my sentence!"
"Kai!"
"Aika!"
Kai and Varek moved at the same time.
Kai slammed into Leon, knocking him out of the Null's reach.
Varek intercepted the other arm with his blade, sparks scattering.
The Null screeched — a hollow, echoing sound that made Kai's skin crawl.
"Run now!" Varek barked.
But Kai didn't run.
He froze.
TRAUMA — TIME BREAKS APART
Time didn't slow.
It shattered.
The Null's movements stretched into long, distorted frames.
Aika's gasp warped into a distant echo.
Leon's voice became muffled, like he was shouting from underwater.
Kai's vision blurred at the edges.
His chest tightened.
Not again… not again…
Images flashed in his mind like a broken film reel:
the last days in Chronomara
the sky splitting open
the ground collapsing
the screams
the feeling of being powerless
the moment he lost everything
the moment he ran
the moment he failed
Each memory slammed into him, sharp and disorienting.
His breath hitched.
His knees trembled.
The Null lunged again — but Kai couldn't move.
He felt like a child again.
Small.
Helpless.
Frozen.
Move. Move. MOVE—
His chest burned.
A violent surge of mana erupted inside him — hot, overwhelming, almost painful.
It wasn't normal magic.
It wasn't even his.
It was the Chronogear.
It pulsed inside him like a second heartbeat, like a new limb he didn't understand, like something alive.
Kai gasped, clutching his chest.
"Kai!" Varek shouted. "Focus!"
The world snapped back into motion.
THE FIGHT — LONG, DETAILED, IMMERSIVE
The Null swung its elongated arm toward Aika again.
Kai moved.
He didn't think — he reacted.
He dashed forward, intercepting the blow with a burst of unstable mana. The impact sent a shock through his arm, but he held firm.
Varek slid beside him, blade flashing. "Good. Again!"
The Null twisted, its body bending at unnatural angles. It lashed out with both arms, sweeping in a wide arc.
Kai ducked under the first strike.
Varek parried the second.
The third came unexpectedly — a feint.
Kai barely dodged, stumbling back.
The Null pressed forward, relentless.
Kai fired a blast of mana — wild, unfocused, but strong. It struck the Null's torso, staggering it.
Varek's eyes flicked toward Kai. "Your magic— it's different."
Kai didn't answer. He couldn't.
The Chronogear pulsed again, sending another surge through his veins. His movements sharpened. His senses heightened. He felt the Null's intent before it moved.
He stepped in.
Blocked.
Countered.
Dodged.
His body moved with a strange, instinctive rhythm — not trained, not refined, but raw and reactive, like something inside him was guiding his limbs.
The Null screeched and lunged.
Kai sidestepped, grabbed its arm, and blasted mana point‑blank. The force sent the creature skidding across the floor.
Leon, watching from behind a pillar, shouted, "Okay— I take back everything I said about teleportation being unimpressive!"
Aika yelled, "Leon, shut up!"
The Null rose again, trembling, its form flickering.
Kai charged.
Varek suddenly stepped back.
Kai froze mid‑movement. "Varek—?!"
But the Null didn't stop.
Kai had no choice but to continue.
THE FINAL EXCHANGE — KAI'S GROWTH
The Null lunged with both arms, its movements faster now, desperate.
Kai ducked under the first swipe, rolled to the side, and fired a blast that grazed its shoulder.
The Null retaliated with a downward strike.
Kai blocked with a mana‑coated arm — the impact rattled his bones, but he held.
Varek called out from behind him, voice sharp:
"Your stance is too high! Lower your center!"
Kai adjusted instantly.
"Good. Now stop hesitating!"
The Null swung again.
Kai stepped in instead of back — a choice he never would've made before.
He caught the Null's arm, twisted, and slammed a burst of mana into its chest.
The creature staggered.
"Again!" Varek barked.
Kai obeyed.
He fired another blast.
Then another.
Then a final, concentrated burst that erupted from his palm like a shockwave.
The Null shrieked and collapsed, dissolving into dust.
Silence.
Kai stood there, chest heaving, mana crackling faintly around him.
THE CONFRONTATION
He turned to Varek, confused and breathless. "Why did you step back? I thought—"
Varek sheathed his sword with a cold, measured motion.
"I wanted to see how you fight."
Kai blinked. "What?"
"And I realized something." Varek's voice was calm, but cutting. "You are afraid. To the point it hinders you."
Kai stiffened.
"At first," Varek continued, "I brought you here to teach you how to fight more practically. To strengthen your body. But now I see the greatest obstacle isn't your technique."
His eyes locked onto Kai's.
"It's inside you."
Kai's jaw tightened. "I— I know. I froze. I shouldn't have. I'm trying—"
"Trying isn't enough," Varek said. "Not when your fear puts others at risk."
Kai flinched.
A long silence.
Then, quietly:
"…You're right."
Varek nodded once. "Good. Admitting it is the first step."
THE REUNION
Leon and Aika, hearing no more fighting, rushed back into the chamber.
Leon looked between the two of them. "Okay, judging by the silence and the smell of burnt monster, I'm guessing you two didn't die. Which is great, because I really didn't want to explain that to anyone."
Aika ignored him, running straight to Kai. "Are you hurt? Are you okay? You look pale—"
Kai shook his head. "I'm fine. Just… tired."
Leon raised an eyebrow. "Tired? You look like you just fought your own soul."
Aika swallowed, voice trembling slightly. "I'm just glad you're both safe."
Kai nodded, though his chest still felt tight.
The Null was dead.
But Varek's words lingered like a blade pressed against his throat.
The greatest obstacle is inside you.
And Kai knew he was right.
