Chapter 55 - Locked In

The alarm didn't stay soft for long.

It rose steadily—like the building itself had decided there was no more pretending.

Marcus moved instantly.

Not panicked.

Not rushed.

Controlled urgency.

The kind that meant he already knew what was happening.

"Stay with me," he said.

Helena didn't hesitate this time.

"I am with you."

That made him glance at her—quickly.

Like he was checking if she understood what she was saying.

But she didn't step back.

So he grabbed her hand.

Not gently.

Not roughly either.

Just firmly enough that there was no space for doubt.

They moved fast down the corridor.

The building's lighting shifted—dimmed in sections, flickering in others.

Emergency protocols.

Lockdown sequence.

Helena noticed it immediately.

"This isn't normal security," she said.

Marcus didn't slow down.

"No," he replied.

A pause.

"It's containment."

That word tightened something in her chest.

"Containment of what?"

Marcus didn't answer right away.

And that silence was an answer by itself.

They turned a corner sharply.

Another corridor.

Longer. Colder.

Doors began sealing behind them one by one—metal shutters sliding down with heavy finality.

Helena glanced back once.

"How many exits does this place have?" she asked.

Marcus's grip tightened slightly.

"Less than we need," he said.

That was not reassuring.

They reached a junction again.

Marcus stopped abruptly.

Thinking. Calculating.

Choosing.

Helena stepped closer instinctively.

"You're hesitating," she said.

"I'm choosing correctly," he replied.

A pause.

"That's the same thing," she said.

Marcus looked at her then.

Really looked.

"No," he said quietly.

"Because one keeps you alive."

A beat.

"And the other keeps me near you."

That landed too close to the truth.

Helena's expression softened slightly—but she didn't back down.

"Then pick the one that does both," she said.

For a second—just a second—his control slipped.

Not visibly dramatic.

Just… human.

Then he moved.

"This way," he said.

They turned into a narrower passage.

Older. Less maintained.

A maintenance corridor.

The alarm was louder here.

Closer.

More aggressive.

Helena's breathing slowed slightly—not fear, but focus.

"You know this route," she said.

Marcus didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A pause.

"I know all of them."

Helena looked at him sideways.

"Of course you do," she muttered.

That almost got a reaction from him.

Almost.

But then the sound changed again.

Footsteps.

Not distant now.

Ahead.

Marcus stopped immediately.

Hand tightening on hers again.

"Don't move," he said quietly.

Helena didn't argue.

For once.

The footsteps approached from the opposite side of the corridor.

Multiple.

Coordinated.

Not random staff.

Not security.

Something else.

Marcus shifted slightly in front of her without fully blocking her again.

Protective. Instinctive.

Helena noticed that too.

"You always do that," she whispered.

"Do what?"

"Put yourself between me and things."

Marcus didn't look away from the corridor ahead.

"That's not intentional," he said.

Helena's voice softened.

"Yes it is."

Silence.

Then—

The figures appeared.

Two men. Dark uniforms. No insignia.

They stopped when they saw Marcus.

Not surprised.

Alert.

"Sir," one of them said immediately.

Marcus didn't relax.

"Status," he ordered.

"Full lockdown initiated," the man replied.

A pause.

"Target not contained."

Helena felt that word again.

Target.

Her eyes flicked to Marcus.

"What am I in this place?" she asked quietly.

Marcus didn't answer.

Not immediately.

And that hesitation—again—was the answer.

The man continued speaking.

"We're ordered to secure all exits. No exceptions."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Override order," he said coldly.

The man hesitated.

"Sir, authorization has already been locked—"

Marcus stepped forward slightly.

His voice dropped.

Lower. Dangerous.

"Try again."

Silence.

Then the men shifted.

Not attacking yet.

But preparing.

Helena felt it instantly.

"This isn't about safety," she said quietly.

Marcus didn't look at her.

"No," he said.

A pause.

"It never was."

The tension snapped tighter.

Helena stepped closer to him.

Not behind him this time.

Beside him.

"You said stay with you," she whispered.

Marcus finally looked at her.

"I meant it," he said.

A pause.

"But this part is on me."

Helena shook her head slightly.

"I'm already here."

Silence.

Then one of the men spoke again.

"Last warning, sir."

Marcus didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Neither did Helena.

Instead, she looked at him.

Quietly.

Steadily.

"You don't get to decide what I survive alone anymore," she said.

That hit him differently.

And for the first time in the chaos—Marcus didn't respond immediately.

Just tightened his grip on her hand.

Not to hold her back.

To hold her in.

The corridor went still.

Right before it broke.
