Sally stood in front of the abandoned old house, lost in thought. From inside came the playful laughter and roughhousing of the other couple.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps crunching over branches came from behind her.
Sally's heart jumped. She spun around.
Soren was pushing Franklin's wheelchair toward her.
She hurried over, grateful. "Soren, thank you so much. I was just about to go get Jerry to help."
She knew exactly how much her brother weighed, especially with that heavy wheelchair. Even with the wooden ramp, getting him out of the van by himself would have been a serious struggle. She never expected the cold-looking guy they had picked up to volunteer.
"It's nothing. Just a small favor."
Soren replied calmly.
Franklin, sitting in the wheelchair, opened his mouth but said nothing. He looked at his sister's innocent smile and realized she had completely misunderstood the situation.
This hitchhiker they picked up… there was definitely something off about him.
Still, the guy hadn't done anything wrong so far. He had even been willing to push a disabled person around.
Before Franklin could decide whether to say anything, hurried footsteps came from the other side of the old house.
Jerry came running over, excited.
The moment he saw Sally smiling and chatting with Soren, his expression darkened slightly.
He quickly walked up to Sally and slung an arm around her shoulders, staking his claim. He shot Soren a hostile glance.
Soren didn't care. Young people were like that. Besides, he wasn't some stallion who couldn't walk straight the second he saw a woman. These people had given him a ride. Helping out a little was the least he could do.
Jerry forced down his irritation and turned to Sally. "Babe, I just walked around a bit. There's another old house over that way. Maybe we can check it out and see if we can buy some gas."
Sally glanced back at Franklin, who couldn't move on his own, and hesitated. "But… leaving Soren to watch Franklin doesn't feel right. We should—"
"It's fine. I'll push Franklin over there."
Jerry grabbed the wheelchair handles and cut her off. "Come on, let's all go take a look. The sooner we find gas, the sooner we can get the hell out of this creepy place."
Soren, standing to the side, spoke up. "I'll come too."
According to every horror movie rule he knew, plus the abandoned-house-in-the-middle-of-nowhere setting, these people were almost guaranteed to run into trouble soon.
Jerry looked at Soren. He wasn't happy about it, but with his girlfriend right there he couldn't refuse. He gave a reluctant nod.
It quickly became obvious that Jerry had seriously overestimated his own strength and underestimated Franklin's weight.
The dirt path to the second house was rough and uneven. When they reached a slope covered in loose gravel, Jerry's face turned red and the veins on his neck bulged as he pushed with everything he had.
The wheelchair didn't move an inch.
"Jerry, push harder!"
Sally rushed over to help.
Even together, they only managed to get the wheelchair halfway up the slope before Jerry's foot slipped on the loose dirt. His hands flew off the handles.
"Ah!"
With a startled cry, the wheelchair started tipping backward while Sally lost her balance and fell backward as well. Both of them were about to tumble down the slope — and get crushed by the heavy wheelchair.
At that moment, a hand shot out and caught Sally's back.
At the same time, the tipping wheelchair stopped dead, as if it had hit a wall. One of Soren's hands held it completely steady on the slope.
"Holy shit—thank you! You scared me to death—"
Sally gasped for air, still shaken, and looked at Soren with gratitude. "If we had fallen, this whole trip would've been ruined!"
She glanced at Franklin, who was also safely caught, and her gratitude toward Soren grew even stronger.
The naive girl had no idea how insane it was for one person to catch her while simultaneously stopping a wheelchair carrying over two hundred pounds of man and metal on loose dirt with just one hand.
Jerry, standing on the other side, had seen everything clearly.
He stared at Soren with wide eyes, completely stunned.
What the fuck… is this guy a monster?!
"Safety first."
Soren let go of Sally and casually pushed Franklin the rest of the way up the slope like it was nothing.
They crossed a patch of overgrown grass.
Before long, another old house appeared in front of them.
The exterior walls were patched in several places. Every window was nailed shut with wooden boards. Even from a distance, the place looked sinister.
Jerry walked up and knocked on the door. "Hello?"
No one answered. He tried the handle and was surprised to find it unlocked.
Inside was a narrow hallway. At the end of it was a room with walls painted blood-red. Animal wailing sounds came from inside.
Soren's expression didn't change. Jerry and Sally exchanged uneasy glances.
To the left was a kitchen. To the right, a staircase leading upstairs.
Animal skulls of all kinds hung on the walls.
"Hello? Anyone home?"
Jerry stood in the entrance and shouted, "Our car ran out of gas! We're looking to buy some! Hello?"
The house remained completely silent.
Jerry gathered his courage and started walking toward the red room filled with bones.
A hand suddenly grabbed his shoulder from behind and yanked him back.
"What the hell are you doing?!"
Jerry jumped at the sudden pull and turned to glare at Soren.
"I think it's pretty rude to walk into someone else's house without permission."
Soren let go of him, his tone flat.
Sally, standing behind Franklin's wheelchair, nodded in agreement. "Yeah, Jerry. This place feels really off. Maybe we should just leave."
"There are no rules out here in the middle of nowhere!"
Jerry's anger flared again at his girlfriend siding with Soren. "Maybe the owner's inside sleeping and didn't hear us! I'm just taking a quick look. It's not like I'm stealing—"
He never finished the sentence.
Soren suddenly kicked him hard, sending him flying to the side.
"FUCK! You motherf—!"
Jerry hit the floor and grabbed his side, ready to curse. But when he turned his head, the words died in his throat.
Vrrrrrr—
A chainsaw suddenly swung out from the kitchen and slammed into the exact spot where Jerry had been standing a second earlier. If Soren hadn't kicked him away, the blade would have split him from head to toe.
Jerry sat frozen on the floor, staring at the still-running chainsaw in shock.
He followed the arm holding it upward.
A large, burly man stood there wearing a filthy apron.
But what made Jerry's blood run cold was the man's face.
He was wearing a crudely sewn mask made of human skin.
"Ahhh!!!"
"FUCK!"
Sally and Franklin's minds went completely blank at the horrifying sight.
"Get me the fuck out of this house right now!"
Franklin spun his wheelchair frantically, trying to roll toward the door, sweat pouring down his face.
"Soren! Help us!"
Sally clutched the wheelchair and tried desperately to drag it backward, but her legs had gone weak with fear and she couldn't move.
No matter how much she screamed, Soren didn't turn around.
He simply stood there, calmly observing the man who had starred in countless slasher films in his previous life.
At some point, a long blade had appeared in his hand.
