"FUCK!"
Madison watched the whole thing unfold and nearly lost her mind.
What the hell was this? A winged tin can?
She was sweating bullets, pouring every ounce of focus into her power, trying to blink out the way she had before. But no matter how hard she screamed inside her head, her body only flickered once or twice and stayed right where it was.
The rusty greatsword came down like a guillotine.
Madison squeezed her eyes shut and waited for the pain.
It never came.
She cracked one eye open and saw the monster with the sword flying backward into the air, flapping those ridiculous little wings like a broken toy.
Before she could even process it, something clamped around her ankle.
"FUCK!"
She looked down. The monsters had stacked themselves into a goddamn mountain and were climbing up toward her.
Madison kicked out hard, twisted, and jumped off the other side. Her feet hit the ground running and she vanished between the trees.
Soren watched Pyramid Head flapping its stubby little wings in mid-air.
It looked more and more like one of Alessa's creepy dolls these days.
But the thing that actually held his attention was those wings on its back. They had only appeared after it absorbed the angel's energy.
And now, when he reached out with his senses, he felt something strange coming off it. Almost demonic… but not quite. Almost angelic… but not quite.
Like a fucked-up hybrid of both.
The monsters in the Otherworld were supposed to be pure emotion—fear, guilt, rage—given form. They had no real bodies and no real presence. They only existed because Silent Hill let them. Step outside the town and they should've dissolved like smoke.
But this thing had eaten Yutun's essence and then drunk down angel juice. Now it was changing. Becoming solid. Permanent.
Soren's eyes narrowed.
If that kept going, these things wouldn't need the Otherworld anymore. They could walk around in the real world whenever they wanted.
He filed the thought away. He'd need to watch it.
Then the outside world shifted hard enough to yank his attention away. He dropped the connection and snapped back into his body.
"Zzzt—"
A massive tree trunk lay across both lanes of the highway.
Soren killed the engine and got out.
The thing was two people thick at the base, roots still clutching a huge clump of dirt. It stretched all the way across the road.
Up in the sky, a flock of crows circled like they were waiting for something.
"Cliché," Soren muttered.
He summoned Alastor. One clean lightning-charged slash and the trunk split clean in half. Two ghost hands shoved the pieces off to the shoulders of the road.
Road clear. He got back behind the wheel.
He checked the communicator. Nico's signal was gone.
He shook the device. His own marker looked wrong—off-color.
"Overlapping?"
The screen said they were at the exact same coordinates, but there was zero sign of her van. Just forest in every direction.
Sky? Underground? Different dimension?
He ruled out magnetic interference. The damn thing could ping from Hell.
He started the car and drove forward anyway, watching the screen the whole time.
The second he left the split tree behind, Nico's dot started jumping around again—but it never left this small patch of map.
"Definitely not the same space."
He kept driving.
A little while later the sky started to darken.
Then the road just… ended.
A massive steel wall cut straight across the highway like someone had slammed a door on the world. It stretched left and right as far as he could see.
Soren got out and knocked on it. Dull, heavy sound.
"Road's closed."
Whatever this space was, it wasn't letting him drive out the easy way.
He got back in, turned the car around, and headed back the way he came.
He hadn't gone far when a man stepped out into the middle of the road, waving both arms.
Black guy. Yellow shirt. Big backpack.
"Hey! Stop!"
Soren pulled over and rolled the window down.
The man came up fast, bent down, eyes sharp and wired.
"Name's Boyd Stevens. I'm the sheriff of the town up ahead."
"Young man, it's about to get full dark. If you want to stay alive, get out of the car and come with me. Now."
Boyd kept glancing at the tree line like something was already moving in there.
Soren got out.
He'd checked the map before he left. There wasn't supposed to be any town around here. Just forest for miles.
Boyd didn't answer the look on his face. Just gave him a tired, almost pitying glance.
"Save the questions. We talk while we move. Come on."
He turned and headed into the woods beside the road without waiting.
