Pain was the first thing that registered.
A sharp, throbbing agony radiated from the back of my skull, pulsing in sync with the heavy, frantic beat of my heart. I forced my heavy eyelids open, squinting against a thick, suffocating darkness. The air was cold and smelled faintly of damp concrete, rust, and old wood.
I instinctively tried to lift my hand to touch my head, but my arms wouldn't move.
Panic exploded through my veins, completely clearing the fog in my brain.
I violently wrenched my body forward, but a thick, heavy rope dug deeply into my wrists and ankles, pinning me firmly to the rigid frame of a wooden chair.
I was trapped.
I thrashed against the restraints, my sneakers scraping uselessly against the floor as I looked around the dark, empty void, having absolutely no idea where in the city I was.
Suddenly, the heavy echo of footsteps resonated through the room.
