The penthouse was entirely dark, save for the soft, flickering amber glow of a single wax candle. I stood just outside the master bedroom door, carefully balancing a small, red velvet cupcake on a white porcelain saucer. The tiny flame danced, casting long shadows across the hallway as I took a slow breath, a wide, excited beam stretching across my face.
Pushing the heavy door open with my elbow, I padded softly across the hardwood floor on bare feet.
William was sound asleep, sprawled out on his stomach amidst the dark silk sheets. One of his arms was tucked under his pillow, and his sharp, rugged profile was softened by the absolute peace of deep sleep.
