Chapter 34 - CHAPTER 34: Trust is a Lie

They didn't speak as they moved.

Not after what happened.

Not after the bodies were left behind.

The forest closed around them again.

Silent.

But no longer empty.

Now—

It felt like something was always watching.

Wei Liang walked near the back.

Not hiding.

Not leading.

Just—

Positioned.

Because now—

Position mattered.

More than before.

No one grouped together anymore.

Distance increased.

Gaps widened.

Eyes—

Constantly shifting.

Trust had vanished.

It only took one night.

Shen Jinhai walked at the front.

Unchallenged.

Unquestioned.

But—

Even he wasn't relaxed.

Wei Liang could tell.

His movements were sharper.

More controlled.

He was watching too.

Not just the forest.

The group.

Good.

That meant—

Everyone was thinking the same thing.

The ambush—

Wasn't random.

And worse—

It might not be over.

They stopped at midday.

Briefly.

No one sat close.

No one spoke first.

Then—

"…Someone led them."

The words broke the silence.

A participant.

One of the stronger ones.

His gaze moved across the group.

Slow.

Suspicious.

"They knew where we were."

Silence.

No one denied it.

Because—

It was obvious.

"…You're saying there's a traitor?" another asked.

The first man didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The implication—

Hung in the air.

Wei Liang remained still.

Unmoved.

Because—

This was inevitable.

Pressure always turned inward.

Eyes began to shift.

Lingering longer.

Measuring.

Calculating.

Wei Liang didn't avoid them.

Didn't respond.

Just—

Observed.

Then—

"…You."

The voice cut through.

Direct.

Wei Liang looked up.

The same man.

"…You were near the edge last night."

Not accusation.

But—

Close.

Wei Liang met his gaze.

Calm.

"Yes."

A pause.

"…And?"

Wei Liang tilted his head slightly.

"And I'm still alive."

That answer—

Shifted the air.

Not defensive.

Not aggressive.

Just—

True.

The man frowned.

"…That's not what I asked."

Wei Liang didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"What did you see?"

A reversal.

The man hesitated.

Because—

That was the real question.

"…Nothing clear," he admitted.

Wei Liang nodded.

"Same."

Silence.

The tension—

Didn't disappear.

But—

It shifted.

Less direct.

More uncertain.

Shen Jinhai finally spoke.

"…Enough."

His voice—

Cold.

"Arguing helps no one."

A pause.

Then—

"…Anyone acting suspicious—"

His gaze swept the group.

"…dies."

Simple.

Clear.

No one argued.

Because—

Everyone understood.

Wei Liang lowered his gaze slightly.

Good.

Because that meant—

No one would move recklessly.

For now.

They moved again.

But this time—

Everything was different.

No formation.

No rhythm.

Only—

Distance.

And silence.

As night approached—

The forest grew darker again.

But now—

The danger wasn't just outside.

Wei Liang felt it clearly.

Eyes behind him.

Watching.

Not beasts.

People.

He stopped briefly.

Turned slightly.

Shen Linyue stood there.

Closer than before.

"…You handled that well," she said quietly.

Wei Liang didn't respond.

Because—

He didn't need to.

She smiled faintly.

"…They almost suspected you."

Wei Liang looked at her.

"Almost."

She laughed softly.

"…You're careful."

Wei Liang's gaze didn't change.

"I have to be."

A pause.

Then—

"…Trust doesn't exist here," she said.

Wei Liang nodded slightly.

"I know."

Her eyes sharpened.

"…Do you?"

Same question.

Different meaning.

Wei Liang answered calmly.

"Trust is a mistake."

Silence.

Then—

Shen Linyue smiled.

This time—

Genuine.

"…Good."

Because that meant—

He understood.

She stepped back.

"…Stay alive," she said.

Then—

She was gone again.

Wei Liang stood still.

Then—

Exhaled slowly.

So this is the stage now.

Not strength.

Not survival.

But—

Control.

Control of perception.

Control of suspicion.

Control of movement.

Because in this place—

The one who was seen—

Died first.

And Wei Liang—

Had no intention—

Of being seen.
