Chapter 52 - Ignorance

Three weeks changed more than anyone expected.

Not loudly.

Not suddenly.

But in small silences that started lasting too long.

Lucy noticed it first.

The way mornings felt different now.

Adrian was still there—still in the same house, still in the same world—but not always present the way he used to be.

He was always busy.

Always leaving early.

Always returning late.

Sometimes she would hear his car at night but never see him until the next day.

At first, she told herself it was normal.

Business.

His world.

The life he never fully explained to her.

But slowly, something else settled in.

Distance.

Not physical.

Emotional.

Lucy sat by the window one afternoon, watching the garden below.

The mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

A staff member passed behind her, bowed slightly, and left quickly.

No conversation.

No warmth.

Just routine.

She didn't feel like she belonged in the chaos anymore.

But she also didn't feel like she belonged in the silence.

Three weeks ago, everything felt dangerous.

Now it felt… controlled.

Too controlled.

Adrian didn't stop her from walking around anymore.

He didn't question where she went inside the house.

But he also didn't stay long enough to talk.

Sometimes she would catch him looking at her.

Just briefly.

Like he was checking something.

Then he would look away and continue what he was doing.

It confused her more than anything else.

That evening, she saw him in the corridor.

He was speaking to one of his men.

Low voice.

Sharp tone.

The kind of conversation she didn't fully understand anymore.

When he finished, his eyes landed on her.

Just for a second.

Then he nodded slightly.

And walked past.

No greeting.

No words.

Just passing.

Lucy stood there quietly after he left.

Her fingers slowly curled at her side.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something in between.

Something heavier.

Back in her room later, she sat on the bed without turning on the lights.

The mansion outside was still alive.

But inside her space, everything felt paused.

She thought about the first day she came here.

Fear.

Confusion.

How everything felt too big for her to understand.

Now she understood a little more.

And that was the problem.

Because understanding him didn't bring comfort.

It brought questions.

Why was he pulling away?

Or was he never close in the first place?

She lowered her gaze.

A quiet breath left her lips.

Three weeks had passed.

And somehow, she felt further from him than the day she arrived.

Not because he left.

But because he stayed… differently.

And somewhere deep inside her, she didn't know what scared her more.

The distance.

Or the fact that she was starting to notice it too clearly.
