Chapter 34 - She is Mine

Lucy woke up early.

The room was quiet, just like every morning since she arrived.

She sat up slowly and looked around.

For a moment, she forgot again.

Then reality settled in.

She exhaled softly and got out of bed.

"No more hiding," she murmured to herself.

She went to the bathroom, took her time, letting the cold water run over her skin.

It helped clear her thoughts.

By the time she got dressed, her mind was made up.

She stepped out of her room and walked downstairs.

Two security guards stood by the entrance.

They straightened immediately when they saw her.

"Good morning, ma," one of them said.

Lucy paused.

She still wasn't used to that.

"Good morning," she replied.

Then she hesitated before adding,

"I'm going out."

The guards exchanged a quick look.

"Do you have permission?" the other one asked carefully.

Lucy shook her head.

"I'm just going to work. I'll be back."

They looked confused.

"Work?" one repeated.

Lucy nodded.

"Yes."

Another pause.

They didn't stop her.

"Be careful," one of them said finally.

Lucy gave a small nod and walked out.

The air outside felt different.

Free.

For the first time since she got there—

She felt like herself again.

She didn't tell Adrian.

She didn't want to think about him.

She just wanted one normal day.

When she got to the company—

Everything changed.

The moment she stepped in—

Heads turned.

Whispers followed immediately.

"Isn't that her?"

"Why is she back?"

"I thought she was gone…"

Lucy ignored them and kept walking.

"Lucy!"

She turned.

Clara rushed toward her and pulled her into a hug.

"Oh my God, I missed you!" Clara said.

Lucy smiled a little.

"I'm fine."

"You disappeared! No calls, nothing. I was worried sick."

"I'm okay," Lucy repeated.

Clara pulled back and looked at her.

"You don't look okay."

Lucy avoided her eyes.

"I just needed some time."

Clara sighed but didn't push.

"Come," she said. "Let's just get through the day."

Lucy nodded.

She picked up her cleaning tools and started working.

Just like before.

Same floors.

Same desks.

Same routine.

But the atmosphere—

Was different.

People whispered more.

Some stared openly.

"Look at her acting innocent."

"I heard she stole important files."

"She's still here? That's crazy."

Lucy kept her head down.

Then it got worse.

"Hey, cleaner," a man called.

Lucy turned slightly.

"Come clean this side properly," he said, pointing lazily.

Another voice added,

"Don't miss a spot this time."

They laughed quietly.

Lucy didn't react.

She just moved.

Cleaned.

Wiped.

She wasn't here to fight.

She just wanted to finish and leave.

After a while, she walked back to Clara.

"Have you seen the supervisor?" Lucy asked.

Clara shook her head.

"She hasn't been around for two days."

Lucy frowned slightly.

"That's strange."

Clara nodded.

"Very."

Lucy didn't think too much about it.

She went back to work.

She moved to another table.

A cup of coffee sat close to the edge.

She reached forward to wipe the table—

Her hand hit the cup.

It tipped.

Coffee spilled.

Right onto a woman sitting beside it.

The woman jumped up immediately.

"What the hell!" she snapped.

Lucy froze.

"I'm so sorry—"

Before she could finish—

A sharp slap landed across her face.

The sound echoed.

Lucy lost her balance and fell to the floor.

Everything went silent.

Clara rushed forward.

"Lucy!" she cried, helping her up.

Lucy's head spun.

Her cheek burned.

She couldn't speak.

The woman stood there, furious.

"You're so useless!" she shouted.

"Can't you do one thing right?"

Clara turned sharply.

"Vanessa, that's enough!" she snapped.

Vanessa scoffed.

"Don't defend her," she said.

"She's just a criminal hiding behind a job."

Lucy's hands trembled.

"She's nothing," Vanessa continued.

"Just an ordinary cleaner trying to act important."

A tear slipped down Lucy's face.

Clara stepped forward angrily.

"Take that back," she said.

Vanessa laughed.

"Or what?"

Clara raised her hand—

But a voice cut through the air.

"What's all this noise in my company?"

Everyone froze.

Adrian stood at the top of the stairs.

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

"Answer me," he said, his voice sharper this time.

Clara stepped forward.

"Sir… there was an accident. Coffee spilled and—"

He wasn't listening anymore.

His eyes had already found her.

Lucy stood there.

Head down.

Still.

Like the floor could swallow her.

He started walking down the stairs.

Slow.

Controlled.

Every step louder than the last.

Lucy didn't look up.

She couldn't.

He stopped in front of her.

"What are you doing here, Lucy?" he asked.

His voice was calm.

But it carried weight.

Before she could answer—

Vanessa spoke quickly.

"That low-class cleaner spilled coffee on me," she said, pointing at Lucy.

Adrian's gaze shifted.

Slowly.

"Who did you just call a low-class cleaner?" he asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

But her pride pushed her.

"She is—"

"Don't," he cut in.

His voice wasn't loud.

But it stopped her instantly.

The room felt colder.

Adrian stepped closer.

"You called my woman a low-class cleaner…" he said slowly.

"And a nobody?"

The words dropped like weight.

Everyone froze.

Lucy's eyes widened slightly.

My woman?

Vanessa's face lost color.

"I… I didn't mean—"

"Take her out," Adrian said.

Immediately—

Security stepped forward.

Vanessa panicked.

"Sir, please! It was a mistake—"

"Remove her," he repeated.

They grabbed her.

"Please! I'm sorry!" she cried.

Adrian didn't even look at her.

"Make sure she understands the lesson," he added coldly.

"And she's not to be seen in this company again."

Vanessa's voice faded as they dragged her out.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

No one dared move.

Adrian turned back to Lucy.

He reached out.

Lifted her chin gently.

"Look at me," he said.

She hesitated.

Then slowly raised her eyes.

Her face was red.

Tears still there.

He wiped them away.

Carefully.

Then his gaze dropped.

Her knee.

Injured.

His expression darkened slightly.

Without a word—

He bent down.

Checked it.

Lucy stiffened.

Then—

He stood up.

And lifted her into his arms.

She gasped softly.

The entire office watched.

Stunned.

Speechless.

He carried her toward the stairs.

Then stopped.

Without turning—

He spoke.

"If I hear anyone disrespect her again…" he said calmly,

"…you won't like how it ends."

No one doubted him.

No one would try.

He continued walking.

Carrying her away.

Leaving behind—

A room full of fear.

And shock.

And a truth none of them expected.

Lucy wasn't just a cleaner.

And she was never going to be treated like one again.
