Chapter 18 - Chapter 18- The Library Afternoon

It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon, the kind of day where the school feels empty because most students are outside for sports practice, club activities, or just wandering around the hallways. Su Ran found herself with free time, her last class having been canceled unexpectedly.

Instead of going home immediately, she decided to go to the library. She wasn't exactly there to study—more like she needed a place to sit quietly and think.

When she pushed the heavy wooden door open, she was greeted by the soft smell of books and the faint rustling of pages. Sunlight streamed through tall windows, painting golden squares on the polished wooden floor.

---

Unexpected Company

She walked down the aisles slowly, running her fingers along the spines of books. She was considering sitting at her usual spot by the window when she heard a familiar voice.

"Su Ran."

She froze. It was quiet, but that voice always had a way of reaching her.

Jiang Chen was there, standing by the shelves in the history section. He had a few books in his arms but wasn't paying attention to anything else.

"Hi," she said quietly.

"Hi," he replied. There was a small pause, almost like they were both deciding how to start a conversation without it feeling awkward.

Zhao Ming, predictably, appeared moments later from behind a tall shelf, holding a comic book in one hand and a half-eaten snack in the other.

"Why are both of you acting like this is a spy movie?" he whispered dramatically.

Su Ran rolled her eyes. "We're not acting."

"Exactly," Zhao Ming said, pointing at them. "You are just tense and suspicious. Very spy-like. Very mysterious."

Jiang Chen ignored him and turned back toward Su Ran.

"Do you… want to sit together?" he asked.

She nodded slowly, and they walked toward the big window at the far end of the library.

The Window Table

Their table was quiet, tucked in a corner, with sunlight streaming across it. Su Ran set her bag down and opened a notebook, pretending she was working. Jiang Chen placed his books down neatly and opened a history book.

Zhao Ming flopped into the chair across from them, plopping his snack bag on the table.

"This is perfect," he said. "We are a very normal study group. Nothing unusual."

"Zhao Ming, stop making everything awkward," Su Ran whispered.

He ignored her. "You two are whispering. Very suspicious. People will notice. And I will write a report to the principal."

Jiang Chen said quietly, "You're not supposed to speak so loudly in the library."

"I am loud and proud," Zhao Ming said.

Su Ran sighed. She leaned over her notebook, trying to ignore him, but she couldn't help noticing how calm Jiang Chen looked. He had a way of making the space around him feel quieter, like even the rustling pages softened in his presence.

Sharing Secrets

After a few minutes of silence, Su Ran whispered, "Do you come here often?"

Jiang Chen looked up. "Sometimes. When I need to think."

She nodded. "Me too. It's… peaceful."

"Yes," he said. There was a slight pause, and she realized he wasn't rushing to fill it.

"I like it here because no one is rushing anywhere," she said softly.

"Exactly," Jiang Chen replied.

Zhao Ming, who had been nibbling on his snack, suddenly spoke, "You two are whispering like we are in some secret mission. What is this? A secret alliance?"

"We are not whispering," Su Ran said.

"You are," Zhao Ming insisted. "I have ears. I am officially the spy of this operation."

Jiang Chen ignored him again.

Su Ran looked at him, noticing the way his eyes focused slightly on the page but seemed to drift occasionally to the sunlight outside. He was calm, almost unreadable, but for some reason, she felt like she could tell he was thinking about something important.

The Books They Chose

While they were sitting there, Zhao Ming noticed the books on their table.

Su Ran had pulled a notebook, a math book, and a small collection of short stories. Jiang Chen had two history books and a biography of a famous scientist. Zhao Ming's comic book was facing up for everyone to see.

"Why are you reading that?" he asked Jiang Chen.

"Because I want to," Jiang Chen said.

"Because you like suffering?" Zhao Ming asked.

"I don't like suffering," Jiang Chen replied calmly.

"You do," Zhao Ming said. "You just hide it with neat handwriting and calm expressions."

Su Ran laughed quietly. Zhao Ming's comments always had a way of making her feel amused and slightly embarrassed at the same time.

Zhao Ming leaned closer to her notebook. "What are you writing?"

"Nothing important," she said quickly.

"Sure," he said, raising an eyebrow. "You are obviously writing your deepest secrets. Spilling the secrets to the world."

"I am not," she whispered.

"You are," he insisted.

Jiang Chen glanced at Zhao Ming, expression neutral, but there was a faint hint of amusement in his eyes.

A Shared Moment

After a while, the three of them stopped talking and just read quietly. The library was peaceful, except for the occasional shuffle of feet and the turning of pages. Sunlight moved slowly across the floor, falling on Su Ran's notebook, Zhao Ming's snack bag, and Jiang Chen's neatly stacked books.

At one point, Su Ran looked up and noticed how the light hit Jiang Chen's hair. It was almost golden in the sunlight. She quickly looked away, pretending she wasn't staring.

Zhao Ming noticed. "Uh-oh," he whispered. "Someone is staring at someone else."

"I am not!" Su Ran whispered back, her face heating up.

"Yes, you are," Zhao Ming replied dramatically. "And I will document it. This is very important evidence for the future."

Jiang Chen didn't react, but Su Ran could tell he noticed. He looked up at her for just a second, calm as ever, and then went back to his book.

---

The Storm Outside

The wind picked up outside, rattling the tall windows. The rain from the last few days had returned, heavier this time, and the library suddenly felt even cozier.

Su Ran leaned slightly against the table, watching the rain streaking down the glass.

"I like rainy afternoons," she said quietly.

"Me too," Jiang Chen said, his voice soft.

Zhao Ming snorted. "Only you two. I like sunny days. You can eat ice cream without it melting everywhere."

"You always bring food into every conversation," Su Ran whispered.

"Yes," he said proudly. "It's my gift."

The three of them sat quietly for a while, the rain falling, the light shifting, the world outside moving slowly while their little corner remained still.

---

Small Confessions Without Words

There was a strange comfort in being there. Not talking too much, not moving, just existing in the same space.

Su Ran felt her heart beating slightly faster than normal. She wasn't sure why. It wasn't fear. It wasn't excitement. It was… calm, somehow, knowing that Jiang Chen was nearby and Zhao Ming was being ridiculous as always.

Jiang Chen glanced at her from the corner of his eyes, noticed her looking at the rain, and for the briefest moment, their gazes met. He didn't smile, didn't say anything, just let the moment exist.

Zhao Ming, of course, noticed everything. "Ohhh, this is interesting," he whispered. "Very dramatic. I am witnessing history."

Su Ran groaned. "Shut up."

He ignored her.

And in that quiet, rainy library, something shifted slightly. Not enough for anyone to notice, not enough to speak about, but enough to mark the day. A day that looked normal from the outside, but would one day feel unforgettable.

Leaving the Library

By the time the bell rang for the next class, the rain had slowed to a drizzle.

Su Ran packed her notebook carefully, making sure the photo from the last chapter was safely tucked away.

Jiang Chen collected his books neatly, closing them with precision.

Zhao Ming grabbed his comic book, some chips, and declared dramatically, "Time to escape from this library before it locks us in for eternity."

The three of them stepped outside, feeling the fresh, damp air on their faces.

Su Ran noticed the small puddles reflecting the sky, the way sunlight tried to peek through the clouds, and the faint smell of wet grass.

She realized that the day, while seemingly ordinary, felt heavier somehow—like it held a quiet weight that only the three of them could understand.

Zhao Ming immediately ran ahead, splashing in every puddle he could find, laughing loudly.

Su Ran and Jiang Chen walked more carefully, side by side under the same umbrella.

And for the first time that day, Su Ran felt completely at ease—like she could just breathe and let the world exist around them, and nothing else mattered.

Because some days, she thought quietly, aren't about what happens. They're about who is there when it does.

And on this quiet rainy Wednesday, the three of them were there for each other.
