Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Weight of Command

The command tent stood apart from the rest of the encampment not by distance, but by presence.

‎Where other tents moved and breathed with the restless motion of soldiers, this one remained still. Grounded. Anchored, as though the earth itself held it in place.

‎Two guards stood at its entrance, steady as a rock, their expressions carved into quiet discipline. They did not stop Alex as he approached.

‎They did not need to.

‎The moment he stepped close, he felt it A pressure not overwhelming but undeniable.

‎He pushed the flap aside and entered.

‎Inside, the mood was different.

‎Cold, heavier than an anchor and deliberate.

‎A large wooden table occupied the center of the tent, its surface covered in layered maps, marked with lines, symbols, and small metal pins that reflected the low flicker of candlelight. The faint scent of melted wax mixed with the rough dryness of parchment filled the space.

‎Every detail felt intentional, nothing wasted,

‎nothing misplaced.

‎Sir Vald stood behind the table, not seated, not resting.

‎Standing as though even stillness, unmoving for him, was a form of readiness.

‎His hand rested lightly on the edge of the map, fingers tracing nothing, yet everything.

‎Beside him Theo.

‎Leaning slightly against one of the tent's support beams, arms folded, his gaze already fixed on Alex before he had fully stepped inside.

‎Observing, measuring

‎The mood inside the tent did not feel empty.

‎It felt controlled.

‎Sir

‎Alex's voice broke it.

‎Vald's eyes lifted.

‎gaze as sharp as a blade.

‎Not surprised.

You've seen your unit

‎It was not a question.

‎Yes I have

‎Vald nodded once small, almost imperceptible before his attention returned briefly to the map.

‎His fingers moved.

‎A slow, precise motion as he traced a line that cut forward from the main formation, extending into terrain that had yet to be secured.

‎This is where you will go

‎He tapped the point once.

‎The sound was soft.

‎But final.

‎Alex stepped closer.

‎The map revealed more than distance.

‎Elevations

‎Rock formations.

‎Narrow paths.

A terrain that did not forgive mistakes.

Ahead of the main force Alex said.

‎Vald did not look up.

‎Yes

‎A pause followed.

‎Then

‎Reinforcements are delayed

‎Theo moved slightly at that, but said nothing.

‎Until they arrive, the main army will hold position

‎Vald's hand moved again this time stopping directly over the marked location.

‎You will not

‎The meaning settled immediately.

‎Alex's gaze narrowed slightly.

‎A forward position,separated,exposed.

‎Our role

‎Observation

‎Vald's voice was calm.

‎Unwavering.

‎You will move ahead, assess the terrain, and report any changes

‎A brief silence

‎Then

‎You are not to engage

‎Theo's gaze flicked toward Alex again, watching, waiting.

‎Alex remained still, but his mind moved fast.

‎Noticing the gaps.

‎The risks.

‎The weight behind the simplicity of the order.

‎If we're discovered.

‎Vald's eyes lifted

‎For a moment

‎The room seemed smaller.

‎Then you leave,

‎No hesitation,

No second taught,

‎No elaboration,

‎Just truth.

‎Theo let out a quiet breath almost a laugh, though without humor.

‎Simple enough,

‎Alex didn't react,

‎His gaze remained on the map.

‎And if we can't

‎This time, Vald did not answer immediately.

‎He studied Alex,

‎not his stance,

‎not his expression,

‎but something deeper.

‎Then you made the wrong decision earlier,

‎the words settled heavily,

‎not harsh,

‎but absolute.

‎A long silence followed.

‎Then

‎Why me

‎The question came without hesitation,

‎clear,

‎direct.

‎theo's gaze sharpened slightly,

‎Vald did not respond right away

‎Instead, he stepped back from the table,

‎Just once,

‎A rare movement,

‎There are others Alex continued.

‎More experienced

‎A pause.

‎better suited

‎The candlelight flickered faintly between them.

‎vald's expression did not change.

‎You're right

‎The answer came immediately,

‎No denial,

‎No correction

‎Just acknowledgment.

‎for a brief moment

‎Nothing followed,

‎Then

‎they hesitate

‎Alex's gaze lifted slightly.

‎Vald stepped forward again, his presence pressing subtly into the space between them.

‎They wait for certainty

‎His eyes locked onto Alex's.

‎You don't

‎The words carried no praise.

‎no judgment,

‎only recognition,

‎You act on what you see

‎a pause.

Even when your body fails you

‎Theo's expression changed slightly at that.

‎Subtle

‎But noticeable.

‎Vald's gaze did not change

‎That is why

‎Silence followed

‎heavier now,

‎more defined.

‎Alex held his gaze for a moment longer then he nodded once

Understood

‎Vald turned slightly, his attention returning to the map.

‎Prepare your unit a pause.

‎And remember

‎Alex stopped as he turned to leave

‎vald did not look at him this time.

‎Seeing is not understanding

‎The words hung in the air.

‎Quiet

‎But sharp.

Do not mistake one for the other

‎Alex didn't respond, he stepped out of the tent. the outside world rushed back in slowly.

‎Soundz

‎movement

Wind

‎but something had changed.

‎Not around him,

‎Within him,

‎The weight of the mission settled deeper than before,

‎not as doubt.

‎but as something else.

‎Awareness.

‎His hand tightened around his spear.

‎Ahead of him

‎His unit waited

‎Unaware of what truly lay beyond the horizon.

‎Unaware of how thin the line between survival and failure truly was.

‎Alex exhaled slowly.

‎We move soon

‎the words felt different now.

‎Heavier.

‎because now

‎they meant something.

‎And far beyond their sight

‎Beyond the terrain marked on Vald's map

‎Something had already begun to move.

‎Quietly.

‎Deliberately

‎Watching.

‎Waiting.

‎The board had been set.

‎And Alex had just taken his first step onto it.
