Chapter 5 - New technique

Darkness gave way to a brilliant, iridescent glow.

Feng Kail slowly opened his eyes, groaning as he rubbed the side of his head where the falling boulder had struck him. He expected to find a barren, rocky wasteland at the bottom of the canyon. Instead, his breath caught in his throat.

Stretched out before him was a colossal, shimmering body of water.

"Is this... the mystical pond that the merchant spoke of?" Kail whispered, standing up.

The air was heavy, almost thick enough to taste. The spiritual Qi rising from the water wasn't just pure—it was intoxicating, a dense sea of endless energy that seemed to have no bottom. Kail's eyes gleamed with determination. "The energy here is boundless. In six months, the ancient mansion of Xuan Wang will open. If I want a chance to survive against the powerhouses gathering there, I need to become drastically stronger. With this pond and the Qi Tokens I plundered from those bandits, I can make a monumental breakthrough."

"Splash!

"Hehe! Water! Big pond!"

While Kail was strategizing, Igneel had already snapped out of his unconscious state. Spotting the beautiful water, the little hybrid bird didn't hesitate. He chirped happily, dashed forward, and dove headfirst into the shimmering pond, splashing and paddling around like a joyous toddler.

Kail shook his head, a rare, soft smile gracing his lips. "Don't play too far, Igneel. It's time to cultivate."

Walking to the very center of the pond, where the water reached his waist, Kail sat down cross-legged. He emptied his storage bag, floating dozens of glowing Qi Tokens around his body. Closing his eyes, he ignited his meridians. Instantly, the pond began to vortex around him, and a torrential storm of pure spiritual energy rushed into his body.

Far away from the dangerous wilderness, the monumental spires of Fusheng City pierced the clouds. At the heart of this metropolis lay the vast, heavily fortified territory of the elite Yun Clan.

A flash of royal blue silk blurred through the castle gates. The two armored guards immediately stood at attention, bowing deeply as the young girl from the forest sprinted past them, her long hair flying.

"Father! Where are you?" she called out, her voice echoing through the grand corridors.

"In the grand hall, my daughter," a deep, booming voice resonated from the depths of the castle.

The girl entered the massive throne room. Sitting upon an ornate, high-backed throne was a man radiating an overwhelming, oppressive pressure. He had long, dark hair flowing over his shoulders, and floating silently behind his back was a magnificent, rotating divine ring of pure energy. This was Yun Huang, the formidable Head of the Yun Clan.

"Father, look! I returned with treasures!" Yun Lin beamed, holding her head high.

Yun Huang, however, did not look pleased. He sighed, the divine ring behind him pulsing with a heavy weight. "Lin'er, why must you always sneak away? Why are you not cultivating in our family's sacred grounds like your older sister? She has already broken through and entered the Spirit Realm (Tier 3)."

Yun Lin pouted, crossing her arms defensively. "I don't want to be locked up all the time, Father! I want to go outside, travel, and see what the world has to offer!"

"The outside world is a den of wolves, Yun Lin!" Yun Huang warned, his voice hardening. "If you wish to travel freely, you must at least reach the Spirit Realm. Until then, you are forbidden from leaving the city. Now, go to the ancestral grounds and begin your seclusion."

"Hmph! Cultivation, cultivation, always cultivation!" Yun Lin stomped her foot, but she knew she couldn't defy her father. "Fine! I will reach the Spirit Realm in record time, and then you won't be able to keep me locked up!"

Turning on her heel, she marched off to the Yun Clan's secret cultivation grounds—a hidden valley overflowing with dense, concentrated energy. As she sat down and began her training, a sudden image flashed through her mind: a cold-eyed boy holding a pitch-black sword, riding a majestic crimson phoenix into a deadly forest.

Will he be okay? Yun Lin wondered, a trace of worry flickering in her blue eyes. Why did he enter the Coastal Forest alone? I hope... I hope he survives.

Five Months Later... The Awakening

Back in the pitch-black depths of the abyss, the silent pond suddenly began to violently churn.

Rumble, rumble—

The water bubbled as if boiling. A colossal vortex formed around the center of the pond, pulling in every stray drop of spiritual energy from the surrounding cavern. The stone walls groaned, and loose rocks began to float into the air under the sheer gravity of the gathering force.

Suddenly, a blinding shockwave of energy exploded outward, parting the waters of the pond entirely.

Boom

Standing at the epicenter of the crater was Feng Kail. His appearance had completely transformed. His dark hair had grown long, cascading down his back, and the ragged, simple clothes he once wore had been infused with refined spiritual Qi, shifting into sleek, combat-ready robes.

"Haa..." Kail exhaled, a visible wave of force shattering a nearby boulder. "So this is the power of the Peak of the Qi Profunding Stage (1-Star Peak). My senses... everything is a hundred times sharper."

He looked at the water. "This pond is a miracle. There is still so much pure energy left. At this rate, I can comfortably break through into the Qi Enlightenment Stage (Tier 2). But wait..."

Kail paused, his newly heightened senses picking up a strange, rhythmic throbbing coming from the very bottom of the pond. It was a dense, ancient energy signature.

"It seems the merchant's rumors were entirely true. There is a hidden legacy here."

Without hesitation, Kail dove deep into the crystal-clear depths of the pond. Swimming to the floor of the underwater cavern, he discovered a hidden alcove. Resting inside was a pristine, white skeleton. Even in death, the bones radiated a faint spiritual warmth. Locked in the skeleton's bony grip were two ancient scrolls and a sealed obsidian box.

Kail pried the box loose. The moment his fingers unlatched the lid, his vision blurred.

Whoosh!

When he opened his eyes, he was no longer underwater. He was standing in a boundless world of raging, roaring green fire. In the center of this inferno stood a majestic, ethereal figure, holding a brilliant, emerald-green flame in his palm that danced like a living emerald.

Recognizing a supreme senior, Kail immediately cupped his fists and bowed deeply. "Junior Feng Kail greets the Senior. May I ask where we are?"

The ancient figure smiled warmly, his voice echoing through the flames. "This is merely a residual fragment of my consciousness, young one. My physical body has long returned to the earth. You have passed the trials of the forest and found my resting place. I shall bestow upon you my lifelong pride—this flame."

The emerald fire floated from the senior's hand, seamlessly merging into Kail's chest. A soothing, life-giving warmth spread through his veins.

"Senior, what is the name of this fire?" Kail asked, marveling at how it didn't burn him, but instead began instantly knitting together his old micro-injuries.

"It is a flame born from the essence of life itself," the projection answered as it began to slowly fade away. "It possesses the ultimate power of healing and creation. It is the [Flame of Rejuvenation]... Use it well, young man."

Flash.

Kail snapped back to reality, breaking the surface of the water and gasping for air. The moment he stepped onto the shore, a round, fluffy head blocked his view.

"Mama! Why were you sleeping underwater?" Igneel chirped, tilting his head in confusion.

"I told you, I'm not your mama," Kail grunted, wringing out his hair. "And I wasn't sleeping."

He sat down on a rock, pulling out the two scrolls he had taken from the skeleton. "The senior left two scrolls... let's see what the first one holds."

As Kail unfurled the first ancient parchment, a violent surge of crimson energy erupted from the text. It swarmed around his body before shooting straight between his eyebrows, imbedding itself into his soul.

Kail's eyes snapped open. He instinctively drew his pitch-black sword.

Roar!

A titanic, ghostly image of a celestial dragon materialized behind Kail. The dragon's eyes burned like suns, and violent arcs of blue lightning crackled furiously across its massive claws. With a swift, powerful swing of Kail's blade, the dragon roared, breathing a cataclysmic beam of lightning and fire directly ahead.

Crash!!!

The entire wall of the abyss was instantly vaporized, leaving a smoking, molten tunnel that stretched for miles into the rock.

Kail lowered his sword, his arms trembling slightly from the sheer drain. "The... [Dragon Breath Strike]. The destructive power of this technique is insane! But using it just once consumed half of my total Qi. It's a definitive trump card."

He looked down at the second, unsealed scroll. His hand hovered over it, but he ultimately stopped. "No... I won't open this one yet. The mansion opens in a matter of weeks, and I don't know what kind of trial or energy backlash this second scroll holds. We don't have time. I'll open it after the mansion."

He slid the second scroll into his bag and looked at his companion. "Let's go, Igneel. It's time to claim our rewards."

Back in the Yun Clan, Yun Lin burst open her eyes inside the secret cultivation grounds. A bright, powerful aura flared around her body before settling into her skin.

"Yes! Qi Enlightenment Stage achieved!" she cheered, jumping up. "Take that, Father! I'm leaving this castle today!"

She ran toward the main strategy hall to find her father, but stopped just outside the doors when she overheard a serious conversation.

Inside, Yun Huang was debriefing his top elders. "The ancient mansion of Xuan Wang will open any day now. Countless rival clans, rogue cultivators, and hidden sects are descending upon the region. We must send a powerful vanguard to secure the Heaven-Class techniques."

Yun Lin didn't hesitate. She kicked the doors open and marched in. "I'll go! Father, let me lead the vanguard!"

Yun Huang's face darkened. "Absolutely not! I told you, you cannot go out until you reach the Spirit—"

"Oh, stop being so rigid, Yun Huang."

A gentle, yet unbelievably deep voice echoed from the shadows of the hall. An elderly man with long white hair and eyes that held the wisdom of a thousand years stepped forward.

Yun Lin's face lit up with absolute joy. "Grandpa! You're finally back!"

This was Yun Lao, the grandfather of the clan and a legendary powerhouse whose name alone made rival empires tremble.

Yun Lao smiled warmly, patting his granddaughter's head. "Don't worry, Yun Huang. I will accompany the girl to the Xuan Wang mansion myself. It will be a good experience for her."

Knowing he could not argue with his own father, Yun Huang bowed his head respectfully. "If Father is going, then I am at ease."

Yun Lao stroked his white beard, a fierce, protective glint in his eyes. "Do not worry. In this region, there is no one alive who dares to mess with me. And if anyone tries to harm my granddaughter... I will give them a lesson they will remember in their next life."

Yun Lin giggled, clenching her fists. "Grandpa, let's hurry! We have to get there before the gates open!"

Meanwhile, back at the village marketplace, the shady shopkeeper was organizing his stalls when a silent, imposing figure stepped into the shade of his roof.

"Here are your Tier 2 pills," a cold voice spoke.

The shopkeeper gasped, looking up into the piercing eyes of Feng Kail. He looked down at the wooden box placed on his counter. Opening it, the dense aroma of two high-grade Tier 2 pills filled the air.

"This... you actually made it back from the Coastal Forest?!" The shopkeeper swallowed hard, his eyes filled with sudden terror and profound respect. "Where... where did you get these?"

"Don't ask questions that aren't yours to ask," Kail replied coldly, turning his back. "Keep the pills. We are even."

Without waiting for a response, Kail walked away, heading toward the mountainous region where the coordinates of the ancient mansion lay.

A few days later, nestled high up in a secluded tree overlooking a massive, crowded valley where thousands of cultivators had already camped out, Kail sat cross-legged. He placed his black sword across his lap, closing his eyes to enter a deep state of meditation.

Hummmmm...

Suddenly, a violent, world-shaking tremor rippled through the earth. A pillar of ancient, golden light shot straight into the heavens from the center of the valley, shattering the clouds.

Kail's eyes snapped open, burning with an unyielding fire.

"It's starting," he whispered, grabbing the hilt of his sword. "The time has come."
