Dr. Connors heard the strange, slightly sibilant quality in Peter's voice and looked up. The sight that met him caused him to stumble back in alarm.
"My God, Peter! What happened to you? Did you inject a high-concentration serum while I wasn't looking?"
"Relax, Doctor." With a quick twist of the Omnitrix, Peter's scales receded, and his human form returned. "This has nothing to do with your serum.
It's a result of... let's call it 'magical gene-mapping.' I've achieved a perfect balance with the lizard DNA; I can harness the power without the predatory instincts."
Peter drew a vial of his own blood and handed it over. "Take a look at this. I guarantee you'll be stunned."
Connors took the vial with trembling hands, quickly preparing a slide for the microscope.
"Good heavens... how is it this perfect?!" he whispered, before moving to a more advanced genetic analyzer. "The compatibility is 100%! This defies every known law of biological rejection!"
Peter let the doctor revel in the discovery for a few minutes before cutting through the excitement. "Doctor, if we use my blood as a neutralizing medium, could we increase a human's tolerance for the 100% concentration serum?"
Connors fell silent, deep in thought. "Theoretically... yes. But whether it will succeed in practice? Only God knows."
"Then let's find out," Peter proposed. "Prepare a new batch of serum using my blood as the base. You can be the test subject. If things go south, I'm right here to purge the unstable DNA with my healing power, just like I did before."
Connors hesitated. He remembered the horror of losing himself to the lizard mind. But he also looked at Peter—a young man who had just manhandled the Hulk—and knew he was safe. He nodded. "Alright. Let's do it."
The process was swift. Soon, a glowing vial of the new "Peter-hybrid" serum was ready. Connors took a deep breath and injected it into his arm.
For a minute, nothing happened. Then, his body began to fluctuate. His skin flickered between human flesh and green scales. His mind remained clear—no red haze of rage, no primal urge to hunt—but his physical form seemed stuck in a loop of transformation.
Seeing Connors struggling to stabilize, Peter placed a hand on his shoulder. As the Horse Talisman flared, the white light washed over the doctor. The lizard traits receded instantly.
Connors collapsed into a chair, gasping for air. "I... I felt it. The power was there, but it didn't take my mind."
He reached for a glass of water to steady his nerves.
CRACK!
The glass shattered in his grip before his fingers even fully closed. Fragments of glass were crushed into fine powder against his palm, yet not a single piece pierced his skin.
"If you want to test the healing factor, I can help with that," Peter said. Before Connors could react, Peter's finger struck like a needle, piercing the back of the doctor's hand.
Connors hissed in pain as blood began to flow from the small puncture. But he didn't pull away. He watched, fascinated, as the wound closed in real-time. Within sixty seconds, only a faint red scab remained.
"It... it worked!" Connors' voice shook with emotion. He had assumed Peter's healing would strip away the power along with the mutation. But this time, the strength remained.
"Uh... it looks like it did more than just that," Peter noted, snapping a photo with his phone and showing it to him.
Connors jumped, nearly crushing the phone. Fine green scales were creeping up his neck again. "Peter! It's recurring! Heal me again, I can't go home looking like this!"
"Calm down, Doc," Peter laughed, patting his shoulder. "That wasn't my healing failing. Try... try willing the scales to go away."
Connors closed his eyes and focused. Slowly, the scales receded into his pores.
"I can... I can switch?" Connors was breathless. He spent the next ten minutes covered in scales, growing a tail, and then retracting it all, playing with the transformation like a child with a new toy.
"It might be my blood," Peter mused, "or it might be that you were already 'chosen' by the Lizard Totem. Your previous mutation left a blueprint; the perfect genes I provided simply unlocked the lock."
Peter's explanation was "scientific" enough for Connors. But in his heart, Peter suspected the truth was more mystical. The doctor was now a "Perfect Lizard."
To test this theory, Peter had a simple plan: give a dose to his best friend, Harry Osborn. If Harry could also shift forms at will, then Peter had just created an army of "Perfect Lizards." If not... then Connors truly was special.
