Chapter 82 - What Stayed After The Kiss

The third kiss ended slower than the others.

Not because either of them wanted distance.

Because breathing had finally become necessary again.

Xu Chen remained close enough that their foreheads still nearly touched afterward, his hand resting against the side of Aum's neck while both of them tried unsuccessfully to return their nervous systems to anything resembling stability.

It did not work.

Aum's thumb continued moving slowly against Xu Chen's jaw in small unconscious motions that made concentration almost impossible.

Xu Chen exhaled softly through his nose.

"You keep doing that."

Aum's gaze lifted immediately.

"Doing what."

"That."

"The clarification lacks precision."

Xu Chen laughed weakly.

"Your hand."

Aum seemed to realize the movement only after Xu Chen pointed it out. His fingers stilled briefly against Xu Chen's skin.

Then resumed anyway.

"I was not aware I had continued."

"That's somehow worse."

Aum studied him carefully now, close enough that Xu Chen could still feel warmth from every breath between them.

"You appear affected by repetitive touch."

Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.

"Aum."

"Yes."

"If you continue speaking like a scientist immediately after kissing me, I may actually lose my mind."

The corner of Aum's mouth shifted faintly again.

Xu Chen's chest tightened immediately at the sight.

That had become dangerously automatic tonight.

Aum looked different like this.

Not less composed.

More open.

The perfect structural control that usually defined him had softened around the edges after the kisses, leaving behind something warmer and infinitely more difficult for Xu Chen to survive calmly.

Neither of them had fully moved apart yet.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that if he leaned forward again right now, Aum would kiss him immediately without hesitation.

The knowledge settled low in his chest with terrifying intensity.

Aum noticed the exact shift in his breathing again.

"You are thinking."

Xu Chen looked at him helplessly.

"Yes."

"Should I stop touching you while you process?"

The question nearly undid him all over again.

Because Aum still asked.

Still checked.

Still treated Xu Chen's comfort like something important even while looking at him with completely undisguised want.

Xu Chen's fingers tightened slightly against the back of his neck.

"No," he said softly.

Aum's eyes darkened subtly afterward.

Xu Chen felt the reaction physically.

The lantern overhead shifted again in the wind, scattering moving gold light across the courtyard stones. Somewhere beyond the walls, festival music drifted louder through the streets now as Dali moved deeper into celebration-night energy.

Inside the courtyard, time had become strangely inconsistent.

Xu Chen no longer knew how long they had been sitting there.

Twenty minutes.

An hour.

Possibly an entire geological age.

Aum's attention had not left him once.

That realization should not have affected him this much anymore.

It still did.

"You are quieter than usual," Aum observed.

Xu Chen let out a faint breath.

"That's because most of my higher cognitive function stopped working ten minutes ago."

"Approximate timing appears accurate."

Xu Chen stared at him.

Then laughed despite himself, the sound softer this time.

Aum watched the reaction carefully.

"You enjoy when I make you laugh."

The statement was entirely observational.

It still sounded intimate.

"Yes," Xu Chen admitted quietly.

"Why."

Xu Chen's gaze dropped briefly toward their hands before returning upward again.

"Because you usually sound so serious that it feels unfair when you accidentally become charming."

Aum became still.

The silence afterward changed shape instantly.

Xu Chen realized his mistake too late.

Aum's voice lowered slightly.

"You believe I am charming."

Xu Chen looked away immediately.

"That was not supposed to become the focus of the conversation."

"But it was truthful."

Xu Chen rubbed once at his forehead with his free hand.

"You are impossible to survive."

Aum's expression softened further.

Then, before Xu Chen could recover properly, he asked quietly:

"What else do you find charming about me?"

Xu Chen looked back at him with genuine disbelief.

"You are becoming dangerous very quickly."

"I am adapting."

"That's exactly the problem."

Aum moved slightly closer again.

Not enough to overwhelm.

Enough to feel intentional.

Xu Chen's pulse reacted immediately.

Aum noticed.

Again.

"You continue responding positively when I reduce physical distance."

Xu Chen actually laughed under his breath this time.

"You really waited until after kissing me to become confident, huh?"

Aum considered that carefully.

Then answered with complete honesty.

"I was uncertain before."

Xu Chen's chest tightened unexpectedly.

"About what."

Aum's gaze remained steady on him.

"Whether my feelings were occurring alone."

The sentence entered Xu Chen quietly.

And stayed.

All the warmth from earlier shifted suddenly into something deeper. Softer. Dangerous in an entirely different way.

Xu Chen looked at him for several long seconds afterward.

Then his hand slid slowly upward from Aum's neck into his hair again, fingers brushing carefully through the dark strands near the back of his head.

Aum inhaled sharply.

The reaction was immediate enough that Xu Chen felt it against his own mouth.

His composure nearly collapsed again from the sound alone.

"Oh," Xu Chen said softly before he could stop himself.

Aum's eyes lifted back to his instantly.

"You did that intentionally."

Xu Chen smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

Aum looked at him with increasing focus now.

Not scientific anymore.

Hungry.

Xu Chen felt heat spread slowly beneath his skin at the realization.

The shift between them was becoming more mutual with every passing minute. Earlier tonight Aum had been learning touch, closeness, desire. Now he was learning Xu Chen too—what reactions mattered, what sounds he made, what forms of contact destabilized him fastest.

And Xu Chen—

God.

Xu Chen was letting him.

Aum's hand slid slowly from Xu Chen's jaw down along the side of his neck now, fingertips brushing lightly beneath his ear before settling there.

Xu Chen's breath caught instantly.

Aum noticed.

"You are highly sensitive here."

Xu Chen closed his eyes.

"Please stop documenting me verbally."

"You prefer practical demonstration."

The sentence hit so hard Xu Chen actually felt warmth spread across the back of his neck.

He looked back at Aum immediately.

"You absolutely knew what you were doing when you said that."

"I did."

Xu Chen stared at him for two full seconds.

Then kissed him again without warning.

Aum responded instantly now, one hand tightening against Xu Chen's waist while the other remained warm against his neck. The kiss deepened almost immediately this time—not rushed, not messy, but no longer uncertain either.

Xu Chen felt the exact moment Aum stopped holding himself back carefully.

The difference was devastating.

Aum kissed like gravity behaved differently around him.

Slow pull.

Increasing force.

Impossible resistance.

Xu Chen's fingers tightened in his hair as warmth flooded through his entire body hard enough to ache. A quiet sound escaped him before he could stop it, and Aum reacted immediately—closer, deeper, like the sound itself had altered something fundamental in him.

Their breathing became uneven quickly.

The lantern light blurred slightly behind Xu Chen's closed eyes.

For several endless seconds, nothing existed except warmth and pressure and the dangerous realization that he wanted this far more than he had ever intended to want anyone.

Aum pulled back only enough to breathe again.

Barely.

Xu Chen's forehead rested briefly against his shoulder as he tried unsuccessfully to regain coherent thought.

"That," Xu Chen said quietly, voice wrecked now around the edges, "was not scientifically necessary."

Aum's hand moved slowly along his back once.

"No," he admitted softly.

Xu Chen laughed weakly against him.

The sound carried warmth now instead of tension.

Aum lowered his face slightly near Xu Chen's temple, and for one impossible second Xu Chen thought—

No.

Not thought.

Wanted.

The realization hit him so suddenly he became still.

Aum noticed immediately.

"You changed emotional state."

Xu Chen actually groaned quietly.

"You cannot possibly still be analyzing me right now."

"I am trying to understand you."

The honesty nearly killed him again.

Xu Chen lifted his head slowly.

Aum looked at him with the same impossible attentiveness as before, but now there was something unmistakably different underneath it.

Attachment.

Not forming.

Already there.

Xu Chen saw it clearly now.

And the terrifying part was realizing he carried the exact same thing inside himself already too.
