Chapter 2 - chapter 2: Rule One; Don't Look Back

Jayden's POV

Monday mornings were the same for me. It's always the same thing every day—

walking into school and getting greetings from over 50 girls, some gift presentations and all.

To be honest, it's very tough to be famous. But I won't lie, I literally enjoy all the fame and stuff.

I come from a very wealthy family, so I'm kinda used to all the paparazzi and things.

Today, it was time to get myself a new girlfriend. There's this girl I've been checking out for weeks now and she's literally it.

I plan to make my move on her today.

After the school assembly,

I and my friends walked side by side, chatting and laughing about football and women, catching kisses and greetings from the crowd, then went into class.

After the first lecture, we were at the lockers when some girl in a black turtleneck and jeans, with a messy bun and glasses, stepped on Dylan mistakenly.

"Oh my gosh, I'm sorry," she said, bending to pick up her glasses that fell off.

"Oh, it's okay. I hope you're not hurt?" Dylan said to her, and she replied, "Yeah, thanks, I'm fine."

"Well then, see you around," Dylan chuckled casually and she smiled and went on her way.

I watched her leave and something in my heart seemed to open, like a lock that had been sealed and preserved just for this moment.

I quickly corrected myself and looked away from her toward my friends, and we kept chatting.

But my mind was low-key not there.

During recess

I and my friends—Dylan and Jake—sat under our usual spot near the field, half listening to the noise of students and half talking about random things.

"Bro, did you see Coach's face this morning?" Jake laughed, tossing a bottle cap into the air.

"Man looked like he hadn't slept since last year," Dylan added, shaking his head.

I smirked, but I wasn't really hearing them. My eyes kept drifting across the yard.

Then I saw her again.

Black turtleneck. Messy bun. Glasses slightly adjusted like she was still embarrassed about earlier.

She was sitting alone on the far bench, holding a book, pretending like she didn't notice anyone.

But I noticed her.

"Yo, Jayden," Dylan snapped his fingers in front of me. "You've been zoning out since earlier. What's up with you?"

"Nothing," I said too quickly.

Jake narrowed his eyes. "That 'nothing' sounded like a lie."

I leaned back, forcing a laugh. "I said nothing."

But my gaze went back to her again before I could stop it.

And that was the problem.

Rule One was simple.

Don't look back.

But for the first time… I wasn't sure I could follow it.
