It wasn't a sound. It was a signal.
The moment the starting whistle tore through the massive speakers, the heavy metal gates swung inward in one motion and revealed something that no first-year student could have imagined at any scale. Not a fighting arena. A miniature world, complete and deliberate. Industrial zones with towering structures, rocky mountain ranges with interlocking passages, ruined urban districts with their labyrinthine alleys, and dense forests that swallowed whatever lay behind them.
Before any eye could take it in, one thousand five hundred and forty students launched forward like a single wave.
Class 1-A stopped in the first open area as a solid unit. Everyone reading the terrain. Everyone thinking.
"Listen to me!" Midoriya raised his voice over the sound of hundreds of footsteps rushing past them. "The best plan is to stay together as one team. They know our Quirks and fighting styles from the Sports Festival broadcast. We're completely exposed."
"That's not my problem." Bakugo put his hands in his pockets and turned toward the rocky terrain zone.
"Wait, Bakugo! Separating here is dangerous!" Kirishima ran after him and Kaminari followed without hesitation.
Todoroki stepped away toward the industrial area with quiet steps. "I need space. This many people around me limits what I can do with my Quirk at full output."
"Todoroki too..." Midoriya murmured, watching his class's strongest offensive power scatter in the exam's first seconds.
He turned looking for the swordsman. Found Zoro walking in a straight, unhurried line toward the urban ruins zone, in a direction that had nothing to do with any defensive strategy.
"Zoro! We need to stay together!"
Zoro stopped and gave him one sideways glance. "I don't need a herd to hide in. I'm going to find someone worth my time."
Before Midoriya could respond, exactly what he feared happened.
A downpour of balls fell from the sky like black rain. Hundreds of them from every direction at once, from above the rocks, from corridor angles, from varying heights. They were surrounded.
"The crushing of UA has begun!" a voice called from above.
Shindo Yu jumped into the air, his friendly smile transforming in flight into something sharper and far more serious. "Show us what you've got, UA heroes!"
At that exact moment, a dense cluster of balls was hurtling at full speed directly toward Zoro's back.
He didn't turn. His eyes blinked once, slowly, at a measured pace. He pushed his thumb against Wado Ichimonji's guard and eased it an inch out of the sheath. A silver flash split the air, and a sharp wind current erupted from nothing.
The balls inches from his targets slammed backward with violent force. Zoro returned the sword to its sheath with a quiet metallic click and kept walking.
Shindo watching from above understood immediately that direct attacks and ball tactics weren't going to work against these people. He pressed both palms flat against the solid ground and kept his smile.
"Maximum Shockwave!"
The ground exploded from under everyone's feet. Massive concrete slabs launched into the air, deep fissures tore across the surface, and the shockwaves hit the body like a wave pressing from every direction at once. Students scattered against their will to escape the opening cracks, and thick dust clouds swallowed the area and wiped out all visibility.
In the high monitoring room overlooking the full arena, glowing screens covered every wall. Red and green points representing the students' movements scattered across the map. Aizawa sat quietly with his tired eyes tracking the data without pause.
Miss Joke sat beside him watching one of the screens showing Class 1-A's dispersal after the first attack.
"And there it is," Miss Joke said, her tone blending amusement with genuine professional assessment. "The UA crush. Most logical strategy for the first stage. Your students are completely exposed from the Sports Festival broadcast, while everyone else is unknown. That puts them in a poor defensive position."
Aizawa didn't move his gaze from the screen. "Information is power. True. But lacking information doesn't equal automatic defeat."
Miss Joke pointed to the screen showing Bakugo, Todoroki, and Zoro each moving in separate directions. "Look at this. Instead of consolidating for defense at a single point, your heavy hitters scattered. In a battle built on numbers and ambushes, that's first-rate tactical suicide."
Aizawa exhaled slowly and settled back in his chair. "You're watching them like ordinary students. These kids have faced real death several times. Their separation isn't recklessness. It's absolute confidence in their individual ability to survive. And each one of them handles pressure in their own way."
Miss Joke's eyes widened with genuine curiosity. "Very confident. Alright then. Let's see how they handle the second-years' ambushes, built specifically to hunt them down."
In the narrow passages of the rocky valley, the dust settled to reveal Bakugo standing with Kirishima and Kaminari. Before they could get their bearings, they heard quiet footsteps approaching.
Standing in front of them was a student in Ketsubutsu uniform with narrow eyes and a confident, provoking smile. Akihira Masaki. The same student who had challenged Bakugo in the hall.
"I told you earlier." Masaki tilted his head slightly. "I have something that stops your explosions completely. It was unwise to separate from your main group."
"Shut your mouth, second-rate nobody!" Bakugo launched himself like a projectile and raised his right palm ready to deliver a crushing explosion that would end this in one second.
But at three meters from Masaki, something happened with no logical explanation. The volatile sweat in Bakugo's palm produced a small, dim spark. Then nothing. No explosion.
Bakugo's eyes went wide as he hurtled through the air with no thrust behind him. Masaki read the moment and drove a precisely calculated kick into Bakugo's stomach, sending him tumbling backward across the rocky ground.
"What just happened?!" Kaminari called out.
Masaki raised his hand. "Suppression Field. In a four-meter radius around me, I remove the oxygen necessary for any combustion reaction. Your sparks don't mean anything here. Without your explosions, you're just an angry teenager shouting loudly."
Five more Ketsubutsu students appeared from above the surrounding rocks and readied their balls.
Bakugo wiped the dirt from his mouth. And instead of breaking, his expression pulled into something slow and wide and deeply unpleasant. His red eyes lit with a killing intelligence. "Just an angry teenager. Fine then. I'll show you what that anger does when there are no sparks."
He turned to Kirishima and said one word.
"Rocks."
Kirishima understood immediately and drove his hardened fists together, a wide grin splitting his face.
In the urban ruins zone, the silence was wrong in a way that couldn't be explained easily. The shadows of broken high-rise buildings blocked most of the sunlight. The narrow alleys wound into each other like a maze with no honest exit.
Zoro moved through them with level steps.
"Looks like I've separated from the rest again," he said to no one, his voice carrying zero concern about it.
"No. You've finally walked into the trap."
A cold, deliberate echo moved through the empty alley.
Zoro turned slowly.
Figures stepped out from the building shadows. Not two. Not three. Fifteen students from Shiketsu Academy, their matching caps, their eyes fixing on him from different angles, their balls in their hands.
From the front of them, Seiji Shishikura stepped forward. His features were sharp and his eyes carried something that looked like genuine distaste.
"Roronoa Zoro." Seiji said it in a flat, measured voice that didn't need raising. "I do not agree with the presence of someone with your temperament in an institution as distinguished as UA. Your chaotic style, your gaze, the way you carry your weapons, your conduct at the Sports Festival. Everything about you lacks the dignity that a professional hero must possess."
The circle of students widened slowly around Zoro, cutting off every exit angle. Each one activating their Quirk in preparation.
A light wind moved through the alley, shifting the edges of the black kimono.
Zoro smiled. Not the smile of a hero. Something else entirely.
"Hero's dignity?" His voice was rough and quiet. "Don't confuse things. I never said I was a hero."
"Prepare to fire!" Seiji raised his hand, and a piece of his flesh began separating to activate his Quirk. "This arena will be cleaned of people like you!"
Everyone expected his hand to move toward a hilt. Any hilt. At minimum a fighting stance.
Instead, Zoro pulled his hands away from the sword grips entirely. He lowered both arms to his sides. And he let his shoulders drop.
And the wind stopped.
The air in the alley became something different. Not just heavy. Alive, pressing against the chest, making breath an effort. The killing intent that poured from that swordsman's body was not an aura. It was a physical force that pinned several students in place without their understanding why.
Fifteen students released their balls simultaneously.
Zoro looked at them with steady eyes and whispered two words that made the blood freeze in Seiji's veins.
"No Sword Style..."
And in the moment the balls were about to reach him, Zoro was gone.
