A while passed as the words sank heavily into the room between them, and Rebecca finally exhaled before looking away. "I want to be alone," she said quietly.
Elizabeth and Maya shared one last look before they bowed their heads. "Alright, my lady. We'll leave you to think about it," Elizabeth said, and they excused themselves from the room before closing the door quietly behind them.
Rebecca turned in her chair and faced the mirror, then slowly began combing through her hair by herself as her mind continued racing over everything Elizabeth had just told her.
They would never accept her.
She shook her head at the thought before standing up from the chair and walking toward the window, where she crossed her arms and bit down on her lower lip as everything seemed to replay in her mind.
Truthfully, Elizabeth was right. She had tried so hard to please people who wouldn't even spare her a second glance, although the way the maids had gone about it had been wrong.
