Morning sunlight bathed the inner courtyard of the Autumn Wind Pavilion. The rustic scent of cedar mixed with the sweet aroma of jasmine, creating a sanctuary of peace completely detached from the political war devouring the continent.
At the white stone table, the wives enjoyed breakfast. Qīng Yǔ raised her pale hand and, with a lazy snap of her fingers, a small celestial-blue flame danced beneath the porcelain teapot. The water boiled in a soft sigh.
Across from her, Yù Méi noisily chewed a bunch of jade grapes, sprawled carelessly in her chair.
"You know what I find fascinating?" the youngest provoked, almond eyes locked on Huáng Bìyù. "How you melt like hot wax the exact moment our husband throws you face-down onto the sheets."
The redhead choked on her tea, a violent flush climbing her neck.
"At least I don't cry and beg," the warrior shot back, lifting her chin proudly. "Like a certain healer fairy did last time."
The teapot nearly slipped from Qīng Yǔ's hand. The doctor's face flushed a deep scarlet.
"I-I didn't beg! His Yang was far too dense!" she defended herself, voice cracking into a sharp stammer.
"And there's no dishonor in that, dear sister," Mò Yán's velvet voice cut across the table. The diplomat sipped her morning wine with a malicious and completely shameless smile. "I myself fully intend to lose my voice the next time it's my turn. Keeping composure in bed with our husband is a waste of our femininity and an insult to his talents."
The other three exchanged looks, impressed by their Third Sister's boldness.
It was then that Bái Wǎn set down her cup. The soft click of porcelain demanded everyone's attention. The small woman kept her hands in her lap and a maternal smile on her cute face.
"Sisters, please," Bái Wǎn began, her gentle voice exhaling purity. "We shouldn't use such vulgar and frivolous words behind our god's back."
Yù Méi stopped chewing while Qīng Yǔ released a long sigh of relief, leaning back in the bamboo chair and letting the tension leave her shoulders.
"We need to prepare Sister Jié's first time," Bái Wǎn continued, the sweet tone gaining a rhythmic cadence. "It will be a sacred rite. An absolute baptism where her mortal vessel will be dismantled and remade by our husband's grace. Her flesh will yield to the Singularity and her soul will be crushed by devotion, until she forgets her own name and exists only to worship him…"
Bái Wǎn pressed both hands against her chest. Her breathing grew ragged and her eyes took on a glassy, sickly gleam, plunging into a trance as if she were praying in a profane cult.
The courtyard sank into a stunned silence.
Mò Yán froze with the cup in the air. Qīng Yǔ blinked, perplexed. Huáng Bìyù raised her eyebrows.
Yù Méi swallowed the grape dry and pointed a finger at the little lotus in trance.
"Madness in this family is inversely proportional to height," Yù Méi declared, breaking the tension. "Wǎn'er is the shortest of us and clearly the most insane. My sister is the second shortest and wants to tear everyone's head off… There's definitely something very wrong with the blood of you short ones."
Yù Méi turned her face looking for support, but the other three looked away at the exact same moment, suddenly very distracted by the clouds or the bottoms of their cups.
The youngest sighed, closing her eyes, resigned to the obvious truth that, aside from her husband, she was the only sane person in the family.

Hundreds of miles from that morning peace, the main office of the Firmament Auction smelled of aged amber incense.
With an idle flourish of the brush, Mèng Lián signed the final embargo order against the Vault of Ashes. The trade noose was tight. Lín Jié would handle the ruined merchants from here. The surface work, for now, was done.
"Madame Feng," a lackey's trembling voice sounded from the other side of the door. "The guild messengers are waiting."
"Come in. Collect everything," she ordered, her voice emerging cold, impeccable, and cutting.
Two servants entered with lowered heads, took the stack of signed scrolls, and retreated quickly, terrified by the icy aura the redhead exhaled. The moment the door closed again with a dry click, the mask of the guild leader melted away.
She set down the jade brush and walked to the large bronze mirror in the corner of the room.
Scarlet eyes stared at her own reflection. The radiant skin, the restored youth, the beauty that had once toppled empires, now restored and amplified by the touch of a single man.
Mèng Lián caressed her own cheek. Throughout her more than a thousand years of life, she had known every kind of man. Arrogant old monsters, foolish heirs, vain patriarchs… all of them had crawled, begged, and died believing they would one day possess her. But none of them had ever managed to stain her purity. For more than a millennium, her untouched body had been her sharpest weapon, the perfect illusion for which empires burned without her ever needing to open her legs.
Until him.
She closed her eyes. Simply invoking the image of Zhì Yuǎn in her mind sent a burning shiver down the base of her spine. The slavery seal on her soul did not humiliate her; it intoxicated her. For the first time in ages, the unreachable woman experienced the visceral desire to belong. To have that purity, preserved so calculatingly, brutally taken and devoured by him. The strength of that longing was so violent and suffocating that it made her grip the edge of the wooden vanity, gasping alone while her own body trembled.
"When all of this is stabilized, you will receive what you so desire. I guarantee it."
Yù Qíng's promise from the previous night echoed in her mind.
Mèng Lián opened her eyes slowly. She picked up an ivory comb from the table and began to pass it gently through her long red hair. A slow, dangerous, and predatory smile curved her lips as she watched her own reflection. The strategy was working to perfection.
The First Wife saw her as a docile tool. "Just our obedient dog," the Priestess had said a few days ago. Mèng Lián had accepted the insult with her head lowered and knees on the floor, feeding Yù Qíng's possessive ego with the purest submission.
But a thousand-year-old bitch never forgets how to bite.
Dying for Zhì Yuǎn would be the greatest of glories, yet a manipulator's devotion was, at its root, hungry and selfish. Mèng Lián longed to be taken, yes, but she refused to end up as a mere exotic whim decorating the back of the pavilion. She was not a needy healer fairy or a warrior with wounded pride.
The comb slid to the end of the red lock. She would continue playing the submissive slave. She would clean her master's trails and pave his path with gold and blood, building an empire in the shadows where she would be the absolute bridge. Mèng Lián would make her own existence so invaluable, so deeply rooted in that man's business and bed, that the other women would have no choice but to depend on her.
And then, with patience and seduction, she would tighten the collar around all of them.
Mèng Lián set the comb on the table with a dry click. The scarlet of her eyes burned with fanatical ambition. Yù Qíng could wear the crown of First Wife today. But time and the board were infinite. And Mèng Lián knew how to play like no one else.

Twilight had already given way to the deep blue of night when Zhì Yuǎn crossed the threshold of the private study they had reserved for Lín Jié in the pavilion.
The room smelled of ink and already-cold lotus flower tea. The administrator was bent over a mountain of ledgers, spine perfectly straight, brush dancing with precision across the paper. When his heavy presence shifted the air, she made a move to set down the brush and stand.
"Don't get up," he said, his voice soft, sounding more exhausted than dominant.
Zhì Yuǎn pulled a high-backed chair from the other side of the cluttered table, loosened the collar of his own tunic, and released a long sigh, sprawling there like an ordinary man after a long day of work.
"Mèng Lián finished tightening the siege on the trade routes," Lín Jié began automatically, her voice soft. "The Vault of Ashes will start bleeding tomorrow."
"Let them bleed," Zhì Yuǎn answered, closing his eyes for a heartbeat. "I've been reinforcing the pavilion's arrays with Qíng. Her worries about this advancement nearly melted the foundations of the room."
Lín Jié stopped the brush in mid-air. A small smile curved her lips.
"The First Wife watches over the Lord with absolute devotion. It is a terrifying loyalty, but… beautiful."
"Yes." Zhì Yuǎn opened his eyes, and his gaze shone with undeniable affection. "Sometimes it's exhausting. But I wouldn't trade Qíng's love, or any of theirs, for anything in the universe. They are everything to me."
Lín Jié nodded, observing the way that monster spoke of his own women. It was one of the reasons she admired him so much.
They continued talking like long-time partners unwinding at the end of the day. For the time it would take an incense stick to burn, Lín Jié lowered her guard. She complained about the stubbornness of the old merchant clans, blushed when he mentioned how she had inspired him in his theory about the Primordial Loom, and released a genuine laugh when Zhì Yuǎn narrated Bái Wǎn's bizarre outbreak of pious fanaticism at breakfast—a story Yù Méi had already rushed to whisper in his ear in exchange for attention.
The silence that followed was comfortable and intimate.
Zhì Yuǎn leaned forward and rested his elbows on the table. He extended his hand and touched the tips of her fingers.
Lín Jié did not pull away, but straightened slightly.
"I've been evaluating your structure," his voice dropped a few octaves, taking on a reflective tone. "The Law forming in your dantian will exact a high price from your mind, and your mortal vessel is fragile. The soul stage I'm creating will serve to anchor your sea of consciousness. I won't let your Law devour you from the inside out."
Lín Jié felt her breath catch lightly. The posture that had hardened at the touch softened a little. "The Lord already has the weight of the Primordial Loom and the takeover of the continent in his hands… there's no need to spend energy on me right now. I can wait."
"I'm not doing this out of charity, Jié." He squeezed her fingers gently. "I do it because I need your mind intact. And because I simply want you whole."
Her green eyes locked onto his, captured by the gravity of those words.
"You must have noticed a pattern in my family," Zhì Yuǎn continued, his thumb stroking the back of the administrator's hand. "Every woman who entered my life after Qíng had, in some way, her direct recommendation. She judges who is worthy. And I love that protection. But with you… it was different."
"Different how?" Lín Jié pressed her lips together, feeling her own pulse hammer against her throat.
"Yǔ had barely finished telling me the legend of the Shadow Administrator, and I had already made my decision. I hunted you. For the first time, I desired a woman without waiting for my wife's blessing. It was purely my choice. I saw your sharp mind that night, and I didn't want you merely as a useful piece on my board. I wanted you for myself. Genuinely."
Lín Jié swallowed hard. Her eyes moistened.
"Don't say that…" she murmured, voice failing as she tried to pull her hand away, but he held it firmly. "This isn't right."
"Why not?"
"Because I don't deserve that place!" Frustration leaked through every syllable, and a hot tear slid down her mature face. "I spent more than a decade crawling in the shadows. I was used and wounded because of my own naivety. And now… the first time a man looks at me with affection, I feel like I'm about to melt at his feet like a fool."
Lín Jié shook her head, her gaze full of proud, contained anguish. "If I give myself to you now, so quickly and ridiculously, I feel I'll be cheapening my own worth. I'll be disrespecting you, and disrespecting the place that Yù Qíng and the others built at your side. I wanted to be useful first. I wanted to prove that I deserve to be the wife of someone like you, before simply… yielding to my own feelings."
Zhì Yuǎn observed her in silence.
He rose slowly, rounded the table, and stopped beside her chair.
"Jié," he called in a deep voice. Zhì Yuǎn touched her shoulder, making her turn to face him. "You don't need to buy your place. You don't replace anyone. You expand what we are. Your mind, your courage, and your loyalty… that is your dowry. You are already worthy."
He leaned down slightly, resting both hands on the arms of the chair, cornering her in a comforting way. Their faces were mere inches apart.
"You don't have to prove anything to me," Zhì Yuǎn whispered, dark eyes challenging. "But if you so despise the idea of being a woman who surrendered easily... if you want so badly to prove the worth of your will... then take the initiative. Forget what I am, and act like the woman who wants to be mine."
Lín Jié stopped breathing.
Her trembling hands rose and gripped the lapels of Zhì Yuǎn's gray tunic.
"Zhì Yuǎn…" she whispered, the name sounding like a broken prayer.
And then, she pulled him.
The first kiss was not savage. It was deep and hungry. He answered with firmness, one hand rising to the nape of her neck. The taste of lotus tea still lingered in her mouth when the last barrier gave way.
She gasped against his lips, arms wrapping around his neck, while Zhì Yuǎn pulled her up, lifting her from the chair and pressing her against his own body. The kiss deepened in the silence of the study, wet and urgent.
