Chapter 11 - The Pace You Can’t Run From

The door didn't slam.

But the way Kana left—

It might as well have.

The handle clicked shut behind her, leaving the clubroom in a strange, uneven silence.

No one spoke at first.

The monitors still glowed.

The game client still idled.

But the rhythm—

Was gone.

"…She's off," Hikari said flatly, leaning back in her chair.

"…That is an understatement," Risa replied.

Kazuha stood still near the center of the room, her fingers tightening slightly around her clipboard.

"…She's forcing everything."

Ruko didn't answer.

He was already moving.

The door opened again—

And he stepped out.

"…Ruko?" Kazuha called after him.

"…I'll get her."

The hallway greeted him with quiet.

Empty.

The faint echo of footsteps in the distance.

Ruko walked forward without hesitation.

"…Where would she go…"

A beat.

"…Rooftop."

The door creaked open.

Warm air rushed in, carrying the faint scent of the city below.

Kana stood near the railing.

Her back facing him.

The wind tugged slightly at her short red hair.

"…You always come to obvious places," Ruko said.

Kana didn't turn.

"…You always follow."

A pause.

"…You done throwing games?"

Her shoulders stiffened.

"…Shut up."

Ruko stepped closer.

"…You're playing like trash."

"…I said shut up."

"But you're not bad."

That made her turn.

Fast.

"…Then what is it, huh?"

Her eyes were sharp.

Frustrated.

"…You suddenly think you're my coach now?"

"…No."

Ruko stopped a few steps away.

"…I think you're lying to yourself."

Silence.

Kana clenched her fists.

"…You don't know anything."

"…Then tell me."

She laughed.

Short.

Bitter.

"…What do you want me to say?"

"…That I'm frustrated?"

"…That I'm sick of losing?"

Her voice rose.

"…That I'm tired of watching everyone else get better while I—"

She stopped.

Too late.

Ruko's gaze didn't change.

"…While you what?"

Kana looked away.

"…While I can't keep up."

The words came out quieter.

Heavier.

"…Risa's improving."

"…Hikari's improving."

"…Even Kazuha—"

She bit her lip.

"…And me?"

A pause.

"…I'm just running forward and hoping it works."

Silence settled between them.

The wind filled the gap.

"…That's not true," Ruko said.

Kana scoffed.

"…It is."

"…You're not falling behind."

"…Then why does it feel like I am?"

Ruko didn't answer immediately.

Because—

That feeling—

He knew it.

Too well.

"…Because you're comparing."

Kana frowned slightly.

"…What?"

"You're not playing your role."

A beat.

"You're chasing theirs."

Silence.

"…You see Risa controlling the game."

"…Hikari carrying fights."

"…And you think you need to do the same."

Kana's eyes widened slightly.

"…But you don't."

Ruko stepped closer.

"…Your job isn't to shine."

"…It's to make space for them to."

A pause.

"…And when you do it right—"

"…They win because of you."

Kana stared at him.

"…That's… boring."

"…Yeah."

"…Then why should I do it?"

Ruko didn't hesitate.

"…Because you want to win."

Silence.

Kana looked back toward the city.

"…Tch."

A small exhale.

"…You really are annoying."

"…I know."

A long pause followed.

Then—

"…One more game," Kana muttered.

"…Properly this time."

Ruko smirked faintly.

"…Good."

When they returned—

The atmosphere shifted again.

Not lighter.

But steadier.

Kana sat down without a word.

Put on her headset.

"…Queue."

Risa and Hikari exchanged brief glances.

Kazuha watched carefully.

Ruko leaned back against the wall again.

Arms crossed.

Observing.

The match began.

Kana moved.

But this time—

She didn't rush.

She waited.

Watched.

Then—

Engaged.

Clean.

Precise.

Risa followed.

Hikari executed.

The fight—

Won.

"…There it is," Ruko muttered.

Kana didn't react.

But—

She didn't overextend.

Not once.

The game continued.

Controlled.

Structured.

Effective.

Victory.

Silence.

Then—

Kana leaned back.

"…That felt better."

"…Because it was correct," Risa replied.

"…Don't get used to it," Kana shot back.

Hikari smirked slightly.

"…You looked less stupid."

"…Say that again."

"…Focus."

Kazuha smiled faintly.

"…Good work, everyone."

Ruko said nothing.

But—

He noticed.

The crack—

Wasn't gone.

But it wasn't breaking anymore.

As the session ended—

The team packed up slowly.

This time—

No one rushed out.

No one avoided each other.

They left—

Together.

Almost.

Ruko stayed behind for a moment.

Watching the empty chairs.

The silent monitors.

"…One step at a time."

His gaze lowered slightly.

"…Mitsuru…"

A pause.

"…I'm getting closer."

But the truth was—

He still didn't know.

Which one.

Or how.

Only that—

The game she started—

Was pulling all of them in.

Whether they realized it—

Or not.
