Chapter 18 - 2.8

The footsteps were unhurried.

Measured.

Not someone rushing to intervene.

Someone arriving exactly when they intended to.

Mia turned slightly toward the corridor.

Ludwig didn't.

He already knew.

Aster Roth appeared at the end of the hallway.

No dramatic entrance.

No tension.

Just presence.

He walked toward them with the same quiet precision he seemed to apply to everything else.

His gaze moved first to Ludwig.

A brief nod.

Then to Mia.

And stopped there.

Longer.

Observing.

Not her posture.

Not her expression.

Something behind it.

Mia smiled.

Effortless.

"Timing's good," she said.

"I was starting to think I'd have to introduce myself twice today."

Aster's lips curved slightly.

"Would it have been different the second time?"

A beat.

Mia tilted her head.

"Depends who you'd be talking to."

Aster stepped closer.

Close enough now.

Still not intrusive.

Just… present.

"Yes," he said softly.

"I was wondering about that."

Silence.

Ludwig shifted slightly to the side.

Not leaving.

Just giving space.

Aster kept his eyes on Mia.

"May I?" he asked.

A small gesture toward the space between them.

Mia raised an eyebrow.

"That depends. Is this the part where you do something unsettling and pretend it's therapeutic?"

Aster smiled faintly.

"Eventually, yes."

A pause.

"But not yet."

She considered him.

Then gave a small shrug.

"Go ahead."

Aster didn't touch her.

Not yet.

He simply adjusted his stance.

Grounded.

Open.

"Tell me something," he said.

"Are you comfortable?"

The question was simple.

Too simple.

Mia answered instantly.

"Yes."

Aster shook his head.

"No."

The word landed without force.

Just certainty.

Mia's smile didn't drop.

But something in her eyes sharpened.

"You don't know me."

"No," Aster said.

"But I know that answer."

A small silence.

Wind moved softly outside.

Mia crossed her arms loosely.

"Alright," she said.

"Let's try again."

A slight shift in tone.

Still light.

But more deliberate.

"I'm functional."

Aster nodded.

"That I believe."

A beat.

"And how much effort does that take?"

Mia didn't answer immediately.

Inside—

a ripple.

Tiny.

Controlled.

Don't answer that.

Her fingers tapped once against her arm.

Stopped.

She smiled again.

"Depends on the audience."

Aster's eyes softened.

Not with kindness.

With recognition.

"Yes."

"That sounds familiar."

Silence settled between them.

Not uncomfortable.

But precise.

He took a step closer.

Now within reach.

Still no contact.

"You're not the one who was in the forest," he said.

Mia's expression didn't change.

Of course not.

"Are you sure?" she asked lightly.

"I'm very good at running."

Aster shook his head slightly.

"No."

"That one doesn't negotiate."

A pause.

"And you do."

That landed.

For the first time—

a flicker.

Small.

But real.

Mia's smile thinned.

Just a fraction.

Inside—

movement.

A voice, low—

Careful.

Another, distant—

Let him talk.

She exhaled slowly.

Not as controlled this time.

"Okay," she said.

"Then what do you want to call me?"

Aster didn't hesitate.

"I don't."

A beat.

"You'll tell me when you're ready."

Silence.

That was not the expected answer.

Mia studied him more carefully now.

Less performance.

More… attention.

"You're different," she said.

Aster inclined his head slightly.

"I try to be."

"No," she said.

"You don't react like the others."

"Which others?"

A faint smile.

"Most people."

Aster considered that.

Then—

"Most people try to understand quickly."

A small pause.

"I prefer to observe first."

Mia let out a quiet breath.

"Yeah."

"That makes you more annoying."

Aster smiled.

"I've been told."

Ludwig almost smiled.

Almost.

Aster shifted slightly.

His attention didn't leave her.

"May I try something now?"

Mia hesitated.

A real hesitation this time.

Inside—

tension.

Watch him.

But she nodded.

"Sure."

Aster raised his hand.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

And this time—

he placed two fingers lightly against her forehead.

No force.

No intrusion.

Just contact.

Mia didn't move.

At first.

Then—

her breath caught.

Inside—

noise.

Not voices.

Layers.

Movement.

Too many signals at once.

Aster closed his eyes briefly.

And there it was.

Not one.

Not two.

A structure.

Organized chaos.

Defense.

Control.

Pain.

And something else—

holding it all together.

He opened his eyes.

Removed his hand.

Stepped back.

"Well," he said quietly.

"That confirms it."

Mia blinked.

Once.

Her smile didn't return immediately.

"…Confirms what?"

Aster looked at her.

Not at the mask.

Through it.

"That you didn't come here alone."

Silence.

The corridor felt smaller.

Denser.

Mia's fingers tightened slightly.

Inside—

everything shifted.

And for the first time since stepping out of the dojo—

the one who "handled things" wasn't entirely sure she was still in control.
