Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Severance

At the hospital, Shane holds Anny's hand as she struggles to walk on her own. She trudges along a path, as her doctor says "There you go. You've been making good progress on your recovery, Ms. Waybright.". Anny nods, as she looks at Shane, but he refuses to look back at her. "Still playing the stoic role, huh?", Anny asks, but Shane shakes his head, his voice completely devoid of his usual snark as he says "I just.. I'm glad you're doing good.". Anny puts her hand on his cheek, finally making him look her in the eye. The moment of silence between them lasts a second too long. Not comfortable, but expecting someone to break it.

"Come now, Annabelle. You should get some rest.", an adult voice says from across the room. Anny's father. Anny sighs, and trudges back to her hospital room, on a single crutch. She looks back him briefly, but once again, he can't face her. Outside the hospital, Shane sees Sam stand at the entrance, his gaze stuck on the floor where Anny's room is. Shane walks up to him, not saying a word, his steps growing faster as he starts breathing harder, his anger flaring as he finally punches him. Sam just stands there, not responding. Shane says, wiping tears from his face "Coward..", before walking past him. Sam, however, utters "I'm sorry..", watching Shane leave.

Shane walks back home, a small apartment. He puts his coat down, stepping over piles of dirty laundry, and glancing over an envelope on the table. He picks it up, and sees that there's hundreds of dollars inside. The envelope reads "Here's this month's allowance. From Mom.". Shane sighs, tossing the money aside, and sitting on his beaten up couch, sighing "Sheesh. Love you too, mom..", before picking up a half empty can of beer on the ground, finishing it. He looks down at his phone, scrolling through all of his and Anny's old texts, seeing just how different they were before.. everything. He remembers what he said to Sam.. "Coward.", and tears fall from his eyes, as he mutters "I know I am.".

Elsewhere, on the lighthouse, Miles finally gets off of Chelsea, as she gets up, saying "Miles.. we can't..", but Miles interupts her, saying "Don't. I already know.". Chelsea says "Then you know what it would mean for us to..", but swallows, unable to even say it. Miles looks down, saying "But.. you didn't stop me.", the statement made Chelsea look away, as she slightly crushes the can in her hand. She closes her eyes, saying "Because I didn't want to, dumbass.", she looks up at him, finishing "But I should've stopped this sooner.". Miles' jaw clenches, and his fists tremble, and he finally turns to leave. He stops on his way out, asking "If I was older.. would you have..?". Chelsea doesn't answer. That silence tells Miles everything, and he leaves.

On his way home, Miles walks, looking at all the missed calls from Mallory. His finger hovers over Shane's contact, but when he raises his phone to his ear, expecting to hear Shane's voice, a familiar feminine voice responds. "Hello..?" It's Naya. His eyes widen as he checks the number he clicked. "Shit..!", Miles silently says, as he realizes that he clocked the wrong number. He contemplates just hanging up, but Naya says "I've.. been meaning to move back to my old class.", stopping him. "Huh? R.. Really..?", Miles asks, and Naya chuckles "Well, it's not like I'm not nervous to see you again.. after everything. But.. I can't just run away forever, can I?". An awkward silence stretches between them, before Naya could ask if he was still there, Miles says "I'd like that. I mean, I'm glad you're.. we're doing better.". A slight twinge in her voice, Naya asks "Is.. everything cool?". Miles says "Yeah. We're cool.", but Naya says "I meant with you. Is everything okay?". Miles opens his mouth to lie.. but nothing comes out. Tears roll down his cheeks, as he says "I really am just a stupid kid, aren't I..?".

Naya asks "Wh.. what..?", and Miles says "Nevermind, it's dumb.", and tries to hang up, but Naya says "Miles. Don't ever let anyone tell you that your feelings mean less.". Miles' eyes widen as she continues "I remember that day, when you.. chose Chelsea. I felt so.. small. But.. I can't hate you for feeling what you feel for her.". Miles says "It feels like the world won't let me.. love her.", Naya stays silent, before saying "You know why you two can't be together, right?". Miles says "Yeah. I get the gist by now.", and Naya says "Good. Now, is that gonna stop you?", before hanging up.

Miles stands there, his eyes shut, as he remembers his past with Chelsea, how she seemed so scared to get closer to him, until tonight. He thinks back to how she held him closer, she wanted this, but needed to end it.

Miles walks home, and sees Mallory sitting on the couch, alone. The TV turned off, the silence deafening. "Where were you?", she sternly asks, but Miles says "Out. What's the big deal?", trying to walk up to his room, but Mallory stands in his way, saying "It was her, wasn't it?! Chelsea?". Miles' jaw clenches, and he shouts "So what!?", and Mallory grabs his arm, saying "Don't you see what she's doing to you!? You never used to do this stuff!", but Miles struggles, pulling away from her, shouting "Don't blame her for me being myself!", before pushing past her, and walking upstairs. Mallory says, quieter this time, "Can't you just forget about her?", and Miles says "Tried that.", before slamming his bedroom door.

In his room, he lays down on the bed, looking up at the ceiling, as exhaustion takes over. He thinks about Naya's question "Will you let that stop you?". He rolls slightly, asking "What did you mean by that? Do you want me to fight for her..?". He looks at the coat, on the floor, and asks himself the question "Will I let it stand in my way..?". Finally, he says "No.".
