Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: safe house

Philip stood at the center of the ruined entrance, his eyes fixed on the smoke still rising from the shattered blast doors. The wind from the explosion still lingered, carrying dust and the faint scent of burning metal through the hall.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he turned. "Get your gear," he said.

"We're moving out. This base has been compromised."

A while later.

Philip stood in the center of the now-empty base, the silence pressing in from all sides. The hum of machinery was gone. The movement, the voices, the constant activity—it had all vanished, leaving behind nothing but hollow space and dimming lights.

He exhaled slowly. Then turned. Andrew stood a few steps behind him, tablet in hand, the last of the system checks running across the screen.

"Ready?" Philip asked.

Andrew gave a small nod. "Yes. We're the only ones left. All essential equipment and materials have been evacuated."

Philip held his gaze for a moment, then nodded once. "Good."

A brief pause.

"I believe you know what to do."

Andrew didn't respond with words this time. He simply nodded again.

Philip turned and walked away. Andrew moved toward the nearest control station, setting his tablet down as he brought up the central system interface. The screen flickered to life, awaiting input.

He hesitated for only a second. Then began typing. A command line appeared.

Self Destruction Protocol — Initiated. A warning flashed briefly before the system accepted the command.

Countdown: 10:00

The timer began. Andrew stared at it for a moment, the numbers ticking down steadily.

He turned and left the room. The corridors were empty as he walked through them, his footsteps echoing against steel and concrete. Lights flickered intermittently as systems shut down in sequence, the base preparing for its final function. Section by section, it was dying. He reached the hangar. The chopper was already waiting.

Engines running. Blades spinning.

Philip stood inside, watching him approach.

Andrew boarded without a word.

The doors shut. The chopper lifted.

They rose through the opening above, the mountain parting just enough to let them escape before sealing back into stillness.

Then—

A flash.

BOOM.

The first explosion tore through the structure beneath the mountain.

Then another.

And another.

A chain reaction.

The ground trembled as the mountain began to collapse inward, rock folding into itself, burying everything beneath it. Dust and debris surged upward, swallowing the last traces of the hidden facility.

Within moments—

There was nothing left. Only a scar in the earth where it once stood.

Inside the chopper, neither of them spoke immediately.

They watched.

Then Philip broke the silence. "We might have lost this battle…". He looked forward, his expression calm, unwavering.

"But not the war."

The chopper turned, flying off into the distance as the sky swallowed them whole.

The safe house was quieter than the underground base had ever been.

No massive reinforced corridors. No humming machinery beneath layers of concrete and steel. Just an ordinary building hidden among dozens of others, deliberately forgettable from the outside.

Inside, however, tension lingered in every corner.

The Seraphs occupied the living area in scattered silence. Bags and equipment had been dropped near walls, weapons partially disassembled across the table for maintenance. The exhaustion from the evacuation still hung over them, though none of them were willing to admit it openly.

A television flickered softly in the corner. Malak sat slouched into the couch beneath it, lazily flipping through channels with the remote.

News.

Politics.

Sports.

Static.

More news.

"They're already covering the base incident," Rafael said from across the room, cleaning one of his sidearms.

Malak didn't look away from the screen. "Of course they are. Explosion on a mountain? Unnatural? The media eats that stuff up."

"Not the real story," Zahara muttered."Obviously not the real story."

Elara sat near the window, arms folded as she looked out through the slightly parted curtain.

"They'll bury it," she said quietly. "Like everything else connected to them."

Philip stood near the far side of the room, reviewing information on a tablet while Andrew worked at a smaller workstation nearby. Temporary systems. Temporary security. Temporary safety. Nothing about the situation felt stable.

Aziel leaned against the wall, his expression thoughtful.

"They adapted too quickly," he said. The room quieted slightly.

"The Sanctums," he continued. "Most organizations would panic after losing an agent of that caliber. Instead they turned our capture against us almost immediately."

Andrew glanced up briefly. "That wasn't improvisation. The signal system was designed beforehand."

Philip nodded once. "Meaning they expected the possibility."

Malak lowered the volume on the television. "So what now?" he asked. "We wait for them to kick down another door?"

"No," Philip replied calmly. "Now we know too little I'll try to at least find information to give us a fighting chance."

That got everyone's attention.

Philip continued, "They know our methods now. They know our capabilities. If we engage recklessly again, we lose our advantage."

Rafael frowned slightly. "You think they'll come after us directly?"

Philip's expression remained unreadable.

"I think this was only the beginning. Although they anticipated her capture I don't think they predicted she'll absorb haikitium. And as we all know she got a massive upgrade. They'll be willing to risk the lives of the rest of it means they're ultimately killing machines becameore powerful."

Silence settled over the room again. The weight of that statement lingered.

Seraphina entered quietly from the hallway, a fresh bandage visible near her hairline where Hana had struck her.

Malak's eyes flicked toward her immediately. "You look terrible," he said casually.

Seraphina gave him a flat look as she moved toward the table. "And yet I'm still standing."

A faint grin pulled at the corner of Malak's mouth. " Says the person who got knocked out cold."

Zahara rolled her eyes. "Can you two not start?"

Malak lifted both hands innocently. "I'm concerned for my teammate."

Seraphina ignored him, reaching for a bottle of water on the table.

Before she could grab it, Malak casually slid one across the surface toward her without even looking. Seraphina caught it without pause.

The others continued talking. None of them seemed to notice.

But Aziel did, only briefly. His eyes moved between them for a second before he quietly looked away again, choosing not to comment.

On the television, another news report began discussing unexplained activity near the Nigerian coast.

Malak muted it entirely this time. The room fell quiet once more.

Not peaceful.

Just tired.

Outside, rain began tapping softly against the windows of the safe house.

And somewhere far away—

The Sanctum was already preparing its next move.
