Chapter 9 - Chapter 8: Celine's Jealousy.

Luna

After that encounter with Khalil, I knew his words were meant as an insult, but I couldn't care less. All I wanted was for him to stay in his lane and me in mine.

Still… I had been thinking about the hospital lately.

I wanted to visit.

But I didn't know how I was going to summon the courage to ask Khalil about it.

"Lucian, cancel all the meetings for today."

Khalil's voice echoed through the mansion as he came down the stairs, instantly shocking everyone seated at the dining table.

Xander blinked in disbelief before clearing his throat.

"Wow… well, that's new. I never thought I'd hear those words from you."

"Impossible!" Mira exclaimed dramatically.

"I know you, Khalil. You're a workaholic. You can't go a day without working. I mean, you work even when you're sick!"

John chuckled, grabbing some food.

"So where are you planning to go, huh? Don't tell me the world is ending."

Khalil calmly sat down, took a bite, then said—

"Well, ladies and gentlemen… I'm going to kill a pack today."

Silence.

The entire dining room froze.

I choked on my water.

"Luna!" Mira panicked, patting my back. "Breathe! Are you okay?!"

"W-Why…?" I gasped.

Khalil rolled his eyes, clearly amused.

"Jeez, relax. I was joking. Can't I take a day off without everyone overreacting like this?"

Aunt Meredith smiled warmly.

"To be honest, Khalil, that's not bad at all. I actually like the idea of you resting for once."

I hesitated, then finally spoke.

"Khalil… I want to visit the hospital today."

He paused mid-bite and looked at me.

"The hospital? Why?"

"I want to visit my friends… it's been a while since I last saw them."

He studied me for a moment, his gaze unreadable.

Then he nodded.

"Alright. John, Lucian, and I are heading that way anyway. We'll drop you off."

A small smile formed on my lips.

"Thank you."

I rushed upstairs and got dressed quickly.

Blue jeans that hugged my curves, a black T-shirt, and high black heels. My blonde curls fell perfectly over my shoulders.

Five minutes later, I came down the stairs with my phone and a small bag.

From the corner of my eye, I caught Khalil staring at me.

Not just staring…

He was checking me out.

His gaze lingered longer than usual before he quickly looked away.

"John. Lucian. Let's go. Time is ticking."

The ride was filled with chatter and teasing.

But then Lucian leaned forward with a smirk.

"Khalil… I've been meaning to ask. Why didn't you go on your honeymoon? I mean… you married a beautiful woman."

I almost choked—again.

Khalil's expression stiffened, and I couldn't help but find it funny.

"We're here," John interrupted.

"Oh… thanks," I said, opening the door.

"Have a good day, Luna," John said warmly.

"Enjoy your reunion," Lucian added teasingly.

I smiled.

But before I could walk away, Khalil stepped out too.

He walked up to me and gently took my hand, leading me toward the hospital gate.

"Well… have a great day," he said softly.

"And call me when you're done. I'll come pick you up."

"Alright."

He hesitated, then added more seriously—

"And Luna… don't roam around alone."

I frowned slightly.

"Why?"

"I have enemies," he said quietly.

"And they might use you to get to me."

I nodded.

"I understand. I won't leave the hospital premises."

This time, he smiled—brief, but real.

Then he watched me walk inside before finally leaving.

Three hours passed quickly.

I chatted with the hospital staff, and it turned out they were short-handed.

They even gave me flat shoes to wear.

I helped with children, checkups, deliveries—everything I could.

It felt… right.

Like I belonged there.

Everyone enjoyed my company.

Except one woman.

Every time our eyes met, she glared at me like she wanted to burn me alive.

It felt like I knew her.

Or maybe… she knew me.

Khalil's POV

I couldn't focus on anything.

From the moment Luna came down those stairs, she was all I could think about.

I kept stealing glances at her during the drive.

The way she looked.

The way she smiled.

It was distracting.

"Guys, I want to go somewhere. I'll meet you back at the mansion."

John and Lucian burst into laughter.

"Oh, come on," John said, nudging me.

"We know you want to see your woman."

Lucian smirked.

"Did you see how you were staring at her? Or how you held her hand? Don't deny it—you miss her."

"And you're in love," John added seriously.

"Shut up and get lost," I snapped.

But they just laughed harder.

After they left, I drove back to the hospital.

I sat in the car for a moment, hesitant.

Then I stepped out.

Inside, I went straight to the children's ward.

And there she was.

Luna.

Laughing. Playing. Smiling with the children.

A little boy ran to her shouting her name, and she picked him up so easily, like she had done it a hundred times before.

The sight… stayed with me.

"Hi, Khalil."

I turned.

Celine.

"How are you?" I asked.

"I'm not okay!" she snapped.

"You don't call, you don't text, you don't visit me. Why, Khalil? What did I do to deserve this?"

"Lower your voice," I said coldly.

"This is a hospital, not a mental asylum."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But you have time to watch your wife?" she said bitterly.

"I came here for a meeting. Nothing else."

She suddenly hugged me tightly.

"I miss you… I love you…"

And that's when Luna appeared.

I saw it.

The way her smile disappeared.

The way she turned and walked away.

I pushed Celine away immediately.

"Let this be the first and last time you do that."

"Khalil, please—"

"There is no going back," I said firmly.

"I have a mate. I've already bonded with her. Luna is my Luna. I'm not leaving her."

Celine's expression twisted with anger.

"You're leaving me… for a human?!"

She raised her hand—

I caught it instantly.

"How dare you," I growled, my alpha voice shaking the air.

"Don't ever try that again."

Fear filled her eyes.

She ran.

I found Luna later with Chantel.

The moment they saw me, Chantel quickly excused herself, leaving Luna alone.

"Khalil, I'm sorry," Luna said immediately, avoiding my eyes.

"I didn't mean to walk in on you and Celine… I didn't mean to misunderstand anything."

"Luna, it's not what you—"

"Emergency!" a nurse shouted, rushing past us.

Everything changed instantly.

Doctors and nurses hurried through the hallway.

"The patient needs an operation immediately!"

Luna's expression shifted in a second—her emotions gone, replaced by focus.

She turned toward the direction of the emergency without hesitation.

I followed.

Inside the meeting room, tension filled the air.

Dr. Ethan spoke first, his tone serious.

"The patient has a tumor located at the base of the skull."

Dr. Yuri stepped forward.

"If we attempt to open the skull, it could affect the brain severely. The exposure time alone could be fatal."

Silence.

Heavy. Pressing.

No one spoke.

Then—

"What if you don't open the skull?"

All heads turned.

Luna stepped forward calmly, her voice steady but firm.

"If the tumor is located at the base of the brain, close to the nasal cavity, then there is another option."

Dr. Ethan frowned slightly.

"What are you suggesting?"

"An endoscopic endonasal surgery," Luna said.

"We can remove the tumor through the nose without opening the skull."

Murmurs spread across the room.

"That's extremely dangerous," Dr. Yuri said quickly.

"One mistake and we lose the patient."

Luna didn't flinch.

"A doctor's duty is to save lives," she replied.

"If there's even a chance to reduce the risk, we should take it."

Dr. Ethan studied her closely.

"Who are you?" he finally asked.

Before she could answer, I spoke.

"She is Luna James Varelia Ashford… my wife."

Gasps filled the room.

"And the former chief surgeon of this hospital."

The room fell silent again—but this time, it was different.

Respect.

Shock.

Recognition.

Dr. Ethan straightened slightly.

"Doctor Varelia… your suggestion is bold."

"It's necessary," Luna replied.

Dr. Yuri hesitated, then nodded slowly.

"…Prepare the OT."

The operation theatre was quickly prepared.

Luna, Dr. Ethan, and Dr. Yuri scrubbed in, discussing the procedure in low, serious voices.

I stood outside with the patient's family.

The mother clutched her hands tightly, tears streaming down her face.

"Please… save my child…"

I didn't know what to say.

So I stayed.

Waiting.

Watching.

Pacing.

Time felt slow… painfully slow.

Every second stretched.

Every minute felt like an hour.

After what felt like forever, the doors finally opened.

Dr. Ethan stepped out, removing his mask.

The mother rushed forward.

"Doctor… how is my child?"

He gave a small, reassuring smile.

"The surgery was successful."

Relief broke through the air instantly.

"The tumor has been removed, and the patient is out of danger."

The mother broke down in tears of relief.

"But," he continued gently,

"the patient is still unconscious. Once she regains consciousness, you can see her."

"Thank you… thank you so much," she cried.

Dr. Ethan nodded and walked away.

A few minutes later, Luna stepped out.

She had changed back into her clothes, but I could still see the exhaustion in her eyes.

"We can go home now," she said softly.

I looked at her for a moment.

"You know… you can always come back here."

She blinked.

"What do you mean?"

"You can work here again," I said.

"They clearly need you."

A small smile appeared on her lips.

"I know," she said gently.

"But I'm still on leave… it's not over yet."

I let out a quiet chuckle.

"Fair enough."

We walked out together and got into the car.

As I drove, she leaned back slightly, closing her eyes for a moment.

"You were amazing in there," I said after a while.

She opened her eyes and looked at me.

"Thank you," she whispered.

We got into the car, and I drove us back to the mansion.

The ride was quieter this time.

When we arrived, we stepped out together and walked inside.

Uncle Xander and Aunty Meredith were seated in the living room, deeply engaged in a discussion about pack matters.

On the other side, John, Lucian, and Mira were in the middle of a heated argument about something completely pointless—as usual.

The moment I walked in, everyone turned to look at me.

Their expressions?

Shock.

Confusion.

Suspicion.

I raised a brow.

"Why are you all staring at me like that?"

Xander let out a small chuckle, shaking his head.

"Well… honestly, we thought you were joking about taking a day off," he muttered under his breath.

The room burst into laughter.

I scoffed lightly.

Behind me, Luna quietly slipped off her heels, holding them in her hands as she walked past me.

Why does she even wear those things if they tire her so much?

"Good evening, everyone," she said softly.

"Good evening, dear," Aunty Meredith replied warmly.

Even Xander smiled.

I paused.

Since when does he smile like that? And at her?

Luna walked past me effortlessly, completely at ease, while I found myself watching her for a second longer than necessary.

Soon after, we all gathered for dinner.

The atmosphere was light again.

Too light.

John leaned back in his chair, grinning at Lucian.

"You know, at this rate, I'm convinced you'll never find your mate."

Lucian scoffed.

"Oh please, at least I don't scare women away with my face."

"My face?" John gasped dramatically.

"This face is a blessing."

Mira rolled her eyes.

"You're both hopeless."

Their bickering continued, filling the room with laughter.

Then—

Everything changed.

A guard rushed in, slightly out of breath.

"Alpha… there's a report."

I looked up sharply.

"Speak."

The guard hesitated for a second before saying—

"Alpha Khalil....… Alpha Yuan has imprisoned your men. The three you sent to him for peace negotiations."

Silence.

Dead silence.

Then—

"What?!" I growled, my wolf surging forward violently.

The air shifted instantly.

Power. Rage. Authority.

I could feel it spreading through the room.

Luna flinched.

Her fear hit me like a cold wave—but my anger was stronger.

John stepped forward quickly.

"Khalil, calm down," he said firmly.

"Your beta is here. Your advisor is here. We need you thinking clearly. Tell us what to do."

I took a deep breath, forcing my wolf back under control.

But my voice?

Still deadly.

"We're getting our men back."

I looked at John and Lucian.

"You two will go and spy on that pack. I want everything—everything."

Lucian straightened immediately.

"Yes, Alpha."

"Every detail about Alpha Yuan," I continued.

"His strengths, weaknesses, his warriors… and I want a full blueprint of his pack house."

John nodded seriously.

"You'll have it."

"I'm giving you 24 hours."

They both nodded in unison.

"Understood."

I turned to Uncle Xander.

"Uncle… I need a plan."

His expression hardened instantly.

"We're going to attack in 72 hours."

The room fell silent again—but this time, it wasn't shock.

It was war.

Xander nodded slowly.

"Then we don't waste time. We prepare."

"We'll need to train the army harder," he added.

"They need to be ready for anything."

"They will be," I said firmly.

The mood in the room had completely shifted.

Luna, Mira, and Aunty Meredith exchanged glances.

Without a word, they quietly excused themselves and headed to their rooms.

Luna paused for a second before leaving.

Her eyes met mine.

There was worry there.

Fear.

But also… trust.

Then she turned and walked away.

The rest of us stayed behind.

John, Lucian, Uncle Xander, and I gathered around the table.

Maps were brought out.

Strategies were drawn.

Every possible scenario was discussed.

"No weak points," Lucian said.

"No mistakes," John added.

"No mercy," I finished.

The war had begun.

Hours later, we finally retired to our rooms.

But sleep?

That was the last thing on my mind.

Khalil thought he was preparing for war…

Luna thought her biggest danger was falling for him…

But war doesn't begin on the battlefield—

it begins in silence, in jealousy, and in betrayal hidden behind smiles.

Three men were captured.

One Alpha was enraged.

And in the shadows… Celine was smiling.

Because jealousy has a way of turning love into destruction.

And this time…

it wasn't just a war of packs.

It was a war of hearts.
