Something that was going to require, from both of them, a great deal of patience and a great deal of faith.

"You know what I think?" he said.

"What?"

"I think you should write that down. What you just said about believing in what you already are."

She considered this with the seriousness it deserved. "In my notebook?"

"In your notebook."

She nodded, already reaching for the battered blue notebook she kept on her nightstand — the one with the song lyrics and the observations and the occasional poem, all in a handwriting that was still learning its own proportions. She opened it to a fresh page and wrote, in careful, slightly uneven letters:

*The answer is already in you. You just have to stop looking for a different one.*

She read it back. Then she drew a small peach tree in the margin.

"One more chapter?" she said.

"One more chapter," Scott repeated.

"I need to know what happens to the Valley. I want to know if Po the panda defeated the big bad guy with the Wuxi Finger Hold!" she whined, clutching the hardcover book to her chest.

He looked at his daughter lovingly, reaching out to gently pat her head. "It's past your bedtime, sweetie. You have your vocal lessons and music class tomorrow morning. You need to rest your voice."

"No, no, just one more page! Just a little bit, please, Dad?"

Tay sat up, deploying her ultimate weapon. She smiled, her tiny, pale fingers gesturing in a pleading motion, her eyes widening into an expression of sheer, undeniable sweetness. It was a charm that would one day disarm stadiums full of people.

Scott chuckled, his resolve instantly crumbling. He could never resist his daughter's "trump card." The little girl always succeeded.

"Alright," Scott sighed, taking the book back and adjusting his reading glasses. "One more chapter. Let's see what Master Oogway has to say about the illusion of control..."

She leaned into his shoulder with the uncomplicated, absolute trust of a child who had always felt safe, and the farm was quiet around them, and the stars above the tree lines were very bright, and neither of them knew that in seven years she would stand in front of a Nashville label executive and sing with a voice that would make the room go still — that this quiet, cold December night, in a farmhouse in Pennsylvania, reading a book by an eleven-year-old boy, was already part of the long story that everything in her future was going to tell.

Bridgetown, Barbados

The Caribbean at night was a contradiction.

It was one of the most beautiful places on earth, and it was also, like all beautiful places, entirely indifferent to the lives being lived within it. The sea did not care about the argument bleeding through the walls of the small concrete bungalow. The stars did not care. The warm, heavy air that carried the smell of salt and night-blooming flowers and the distant trace of someone's cooking did not care. The island existed in its magnificent, unhurried permanence, and the people on it arranged their lives within that permanence as best they could.

Eight-year-old Robyn had learned, early, how to find the pocket of stillness inside the noise.

She sat on the front step — the cracked concrete step that dropped from the door of the bungalow onto a strip of packed-earth yard, where a single mango tree stood in the far corner and the neighborhood sounds mixed with the argument inside into a single, familiar texture of sound. She had her knees pulled to her chest. She had her arms wrapped around them. She was, to any observer, simply a small girl sitting outside.

Inside was her father's voice, raised with the particular, ragged edge of someone fighting a war that had long since stopped being about anything specific. Her mother's voice, tighter and more exhausted, snapping back with the precision of someone conserving energy. Her parents both loved her — she knew this the way she knew certain fundamental things, without needing to examine them closely. But love did not make a house quiet, and tonight the house was not quiet.

She had come outside. She had brought the book.

She had borrowed it from Celia, who was her classmate and the daughter of a hotel manager and whose family had, by the standards of this neighborhood, serious money — money that expressed itself in a large, cool house and a subscription to an American book club that sent packages in brown paper every month from a publisher called Random House. Celia had brought the book to school because the picture on the cover was funny and she'd thought some of the girls would enjoy it.

Robyn had carried it home in her school bag as carefully as if it were borrowed china.

She held it now under the lamplight of the single streetlamp that stood on the corner across the road, its orange glow just sufficient for reading if you sat at the right angle and held the page at the right distance. It was the angle and distance she had worked out through practice.

The book had not, initially, seemed like it was for her.

She had started it because she'd said she would, and she kept her word even about small things. She'd been prepared to read politely, the way you read something someone else loved when you were being gracious.

But somewhere in the first forty pages something had shifted, and it was this: *Po was not supposed to be there.*

That was the mechanism at the center of the story. Not his clumsiness, not the comedy, not even the philosophy — it was the structural reality that Po existed in a world that had decided, comprehensively and in advance, that someone like him was not the answer. The Furious Five were the answer. The ancient tradition was the answer. The system was the answer. Po was a noodle-maker's son who loved kung fu from behind a wall he had never been permitted to climb.

And then he was chosen anyway. Not despite what he was, but because of it.

Robyn read the passage again, slowly, tracing each word.

*"To make something special, you just have to believe it's special."*

The argument inside had softened into something lower, more defeated, the sound of two people who had exhausted the sharp edges of their feeling and arrived at the flat, grey place that came after. The mango tree stood dark against the stars. A dog somewhere down the road made a single sound and went quiet.

Robyn looked up from the page.

She was eight years old. Her family had no money for imported American books. Her house was small and the walls were thin and the people she loved were in pain in ways she couldn't reach. The future was not, from this step, this angle, this particular square of packed-earth yard, obviously visible.

But the little island girl looked up at the stars — the same extravagant, preposterous Barbadian stars that had been there long before she was born and would be there long after — and she felt something settle in her chest with the finality of something that had been looking for a place to land.

The decision was not dramatic. It didn't announce itself.

It simply — arrived. Complete and solid and certain, the way the deepest decisions always do.

*I am going to be something,* she thought. Not what, not how, not with whose help or from what starting point or against what odds. Just the clean, incontestable fact of it. Like gravity. Like the sea.

She closed the book carefully and hugged it to her chest and looked at the stars for a long time. She would return it to Celia on Monday, in the same condition she'd received it, as promised.

But she would carry what she had read in it for the rest of her life.

Houston, Texas —

The Headliners Hair Salon on Montrose Boulevard was not, technically, open.

The sign said CLOSED. The chairs along the front window sat empty. The swept-clean tile floor reflected the yellow light from the single fixture left on at the back, and from outside, to any passing car, the place had the ordinary, unremarkable look of a small business shut down for the evening.

Inside, it was a different matter.

The salon had been serving double duty for years — during business hours it was Tina Knowles' salon, and after hours it was a rehearsal space, the girls testing routines on the open floor while the smell of curl activator and acetone mixed with the sounds of the cassette player propped on the styling counter.

Tonight the cassette player was silent.

It was past nine o'clock. Fifteen-year-old Bey sat in a styling chair in the middle of the room, still in her rehearsal clothes — sweat-damp, a little wrinkled, the kind of comfortable that came from having been in motion for five hours straight. Her shoulders ached. Her feet, tucked under her on the chair, were the feet of a dancer who had been working her craft since before she was old enough to understand what craft meant.

She had her eyes closed.

Not sleeping. Thinking.

Near the front of the salon, her mother Tina moved through the end-of-day tasks with the efficient, unhurried competence of a woman who had been running this shop for years — sweeping, wiping, checking the cash register, stacking the appointment book with the particular proprietary care of someone who understood that this salon was not just a business but a foundation. The thing that kept everything standing.

Her father, Mathew, had quit his job the previous year.

The family had reorganized itself around that decision — the income halved, the pressure doubled, the entire weight of the gamble distributed silently across all of them. He wasn't here tonight. He was on the phone somewhere, or in a meeting somewhere, or doing whatever it was he did in the hours when the rest of them were exhausted. He had the kind of drive that didn't recognize tiredness as a legitimate reason to stop.

Bey respected it. She also, tonight, was grateful he wasn't here.

The silence was good. She needed the silence.

On the styling counter beside the cash register, left behind by one of the other girls at the end of rehearsal — LeToya, probably, who had a habit of leaving things and a mother who bought books the way other people bought magazines — was a hardcover children's book. *Kung Fu Panda.*

Bey had picked it up because her hands needed something to do while her brain came down from five hours of choreography, and she'd assumed, with the dismissive certainty of a fifteen-year-old professional, that it would be fine and simple and exactly what a children's book was supposed to be.

She was sixty pages in when Tina finished the sweeping and looked over at her daughter.

"You all right?"

"Mm." Bey didn't look up.

"You hungry?"

"Not yet."

Tina regarded her daughter for a moment — the absorbed stillness, the way she was holding the book with both hands like it might escape — and decided, wisely, to leave her to it.

Bey read.

The thing that was getting her — the thing that had snuck past her fifteen-year-old professional armor and lodged somewhere honest — was the training sequences. Not the comedy of them, not the visual spectacle of Po fumbling through moves that the Five executed with casual, breathtaking perfection. It was the internal reality of them.

The question at the center of the training wasn't *can Po do what Tigress can do?* It was *what is the specific, irreducible thing that only Po can do, and how does a teacher see that thing in a student before the student has seen it in themselves?*

She read the passage where Shifu, having finally accepted that his method must change entirely, trains Po not through discipline but through *desire* — through understanding that Po's capacity for excellence was inseparable from his love of the thing.
