"Merry!" I shouted, bolting from my chair to intercept her. I caught her by the arm just as she reached for the handle of the foyer door. "Merry, stop!"
"Let go of me," she snapped, wrenching her arm away with a look of pure loathing.
"Okay, okay—just breathe for a second. Let's talk this out."
"We already talked," she countered, her eyes flashing. "But you weren't interested in listening to a word I had to say, were you?"
"I'm sorry, alright? Just... please, wait."
"I spoke to Nikolaj yesterday," she said, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "He insulted me. He stepped on my pride."
"I'm sorry he did that, but you have to be rational. If you blow this whistle, we both go down. You know that."
