Chapter 51 - The Burn Rate

[The Golden Gates Dungeon - Executive Suite]

Balthazar Greed paced frantically across the solid gold floor of his executive suite. His starlight suit was rumpled, and his mana cigar had completely burned out.

Hovering in the center of the room was a massive, glowing red holographic chart.

"Explain this to me!" Balthazar roared, slamming his fist onto his desk. "We had one hundred thousand unique dungeon entries this week! That is record-breaking traffic! Why is my revenue in the negative?!"

His Chief Financial Officer, a trembling lesser demon in a cheap suit, wiped sweat from his brow. "S-Sir... the Customer Acquisition Cost is killing us. We are offering a fifty-Gold sign-up bonus and complimentary potions to every hero."

"I know the model!" Balthazar snapped. "They take the free gold, they get trapped in the dungeon, and they spend real money to survive! That's the Freemium hook!"

"But they aren't going into the dungeon, Sir," the CFO brought up a scrying monitor. "Look at the footage."

Balthazar stared at the screen. A line of "adventurers" was wrapping around the block. But they weren't heroes. It was three goblins standing on each other's shoulders inside a trench coat. Behind them was a vampire wearing a fake mustache.

They walked up to the Omni-Dungeon Corp greeter, claimed their 50 Gold bonus, chugged the free healing potions, and immediately turned around and walked out the exit.

"They're bots..." Balthazar gasped, his excessively tanned face turning pale. "Thorne sent a localized bot farm. He's farming my marketing budget!"

"They've claimed the bonus ten times a day, Sir," the CFO whimpered. "Our Burn Rate is catastrophic. We have lost five hundred Million Gold in seventytwo hours. The ARS investors are threatening to pull our funding if we don't show immediate profitability."

Balthazar stared out his window at the dark, looming gothic spires of the Abyssal Academy on the adjacent peak. Victor Thorne had weaponized his own promotional offer against him.

"Fine. The free ride is over," Balthazar snarled, his eyes gleaming with desperate greed. "We pivot to aggressive monetization. Lock the exit doors. Activate the 'Pay-To-Win' protocols."

"Sir? The heroes hate Pay-To-Win—"

"Do it!" Balthazar roared.

Down in the first-floor labyrinth of the Golden Gates, a legitimate party of A-Rank adventurers was currently fighting a massive Diamond Golem. The Vanguard raised his legendary broadsword to strike the final blow.

Suddenly, a holographic terminal materialized in front of the Golem.

The Vanguard froze, staring at the screen as the Golem punched him through a brick wall.

"Five thousand gold just to swing my sword?!" the Vanguard screamed, spitting out a tooth. "This dungeon is a scam! Let us out!"

Within an hour, the Golden Gates were in absolute chaos. Real adventurers were rioting, smashing the neon signs, and demanding refunds. Omni-Dungeon Corp's brand reputation crashed overnight.

Up on the balcony of the Abyssal Academy, Victor Thorne took a slow sip of his black coffee, watching the riots next door.

"A predictable pivot," Victor smiled a cold, calculating smile. "Seraphina. Ready the offshore capital. It's time to go shopping."
