Chapter 56 - Chapter 47 — Rooftop, Night One

Part I — The Calm Before Day Two

Night had fully settled over the academy.

The last trace of sunlight had disappeared beyond the distant skyline, leaving the world bathed in cool blue shadows and soft artificial light. The academy grounds stretched below Dorm One, illuminated by rows of low ground lights that lined the walkways like quiet guiding stars.

Training fields that had been filled with movement hours earlier now sat still and empty. The metal structures of sparring stations reflected faint light. Distant drones hovered silently, their small lights blinking as they completed late-night maintenance tasks.

The air had cooled noticeably.

A gentle breeze drifted between the buildings, carrying the faint scent of fresh-cut grass and metal — the familiar scent of the academy at night.

Dorm One stood tall against the sky, its glass panels reflecting distant city lights and scattered stars above. Warm light glowed from many of the windows, cadets still awake after the long day.

Gamma Squad entered through the main doors.

Their boots echoed softly across the polished stone floor of the lobby. The sound carried more than usual — the building had quieted for the night.

A few cadets sat along the walls, some talking quietly, others reviewing tablets or simply resting. Several glanced up as Gamma Squad entered.

Not quick glances.

Longer ones.

Measured.

June noticed immediately.

He slowed slightly, his eyes flicking sideways toward the watching cadets.

"...Okay," he muttered under his breath. "That's new."

Nyra walked beside him, her posture relaxed, her arms loosely at her sides. She followed his gaze briefly before looking forward again.

"You just noticed?" she asked.

June shoved his hands into his pockets, his shoulders rising slightly in a casual shrug.

"I noticed earlier," he admitted. "I'm just now choosing to acknowledge it."

Castiel, walking just behind them, let out a faint breath that almost became a chuckle.

"You like it."

June glanced over his shoulder, raising one eyebrow.

"I like not getting eliminated," he replied. "There's a difference."

Lucian stepped ahead and pressed the elevator call button.

The doors slid open with a soft mechanical whisper.

They stepped inside together.

The elevator hummed quietly as it rose.

For a moment, no one spoke.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

It was the kind of quiet that came after a long day — exhaustion settling in, adrenaline slowly fading, muscles relaxing after hours of tension.

David leaned lightly against the wall, his arms loosely folded. His gaze rested somewhere distant, replaying the day's fights in his mind.

Nyra noticed.

She turned her head slightly, studying him for a moment.

"You're still thinking about it."

David blinked once, then nodded.

"They're getting better."

Lucian gave a small nod.

"They always do."

June leaned his back against the rail, tilting his head toward the ceiling.

"...I still can't believe we all made it."

Mira stood quietly beside the door, her posture relaxed but attentive.

"It was Day One," she said calmly.

June tilted his head toward her.

"Yes. And Day One already felt like it was trying to kill me emotionally."

Castiel let out a quiet chuckle.

"You exaggerate."

June straightened slightly.

"I absolutely do not exaggerate."

Nyra laughed.

Not loudly.

It was soft — a small, warm sound that slipped out before she could stop it. Her shoulders lifted slightly as she tried to hold it back, and a faint smile tugged at the corner of her lips.

June looked at her.

"You're laughing at my suffering."

"I am," she admitted.

The elevator chimed softly.

The doors opened.

The hallway stretched ahead, dimly lit with soft overhead lighting. The quiet felt heavier up here, most cadets already in their rooms.

At the end of the corridor, the stairwell door waited.

June glanced toward it.

"...Roof?"

Nyra smiled faintly.

"Roof."

They moved together toward the stairs.

The metal door opened with a soft push.

Cool night air drifted down immediately.

They stepped onto the rooftop.

The city stretched before them.

Lights shimmered across the horizon, glowing in layered clusters of gold, white, and blue. Tall buildings rose in the distance, their glass surfaces reflecting faint movement from passing sky traffic.

Above them—

Stars.

Clear.

Bright.

The rooftop itself was wide and open, surrounded by low barriers. Soft lighting lined the edges, illuminating the space without overpowering the night sky.

June walked forward slowly.

He reached the railing and rested both hands on it, leaning slightly forward as he looked out across the city.

"...Yeah," he breathed quietly.

"This never gets old."

Nyra stepped beside him, resting her arms lightly on the barrier. The breeze caught strands of her hair, moving them gently across her face as she looked out over the lights below.

"It's quieter up here," she said softly.

Lucian moved to the edge, standing straight as he observed the skyline.

Mira remained near the center of the rooftop, her gaze shifting between the city and the stars above.

Castiel leaned back against the barrier, folding his arms loosely.

David stepped forward last.

For a few moments—

No one spoke.

The wind moved gently across the rooftop.

The city lights shimmered.

The tension of the day slowly faded.

June broke the silence.

"...We all made it."

Nyra nodded.

"We did."

Castiel glanced toward them.

"Tomorrow gets harder."

June sighed.

"Of course it does."

Lucian looked toward the skyline.

"Fewer fighters."

Mira nodded.

"Stronger opponents."

June folded his arms.

"And probably more ways for me to embarrass myself."

Nyra smiled again, softer this time.

"You did fine today."

June looked at her.

"I nearly got stabbed."

"But you didn't."

"...Still counts."

Castiel smirked.

"You talk a lot when you're nervous."

June shrugged.

"I talk a lot in general."

David finally spoke.

"That's true."

June turned his head slowly, narrowing his eyes.

"You wound me."

Nyra laughed again — this time slightly louder, the sound carried away by the breeze as she shook her head.

"You do talk a lot."

"Wow," June muttered. "Betrayed by everyone."

Mira tilted her head slightly.

"You'll recover."

June sighed dramatically.

"...Probably."

The wind shifted again.

The night felt calm.

And for the first time since Phase Two began—

Gamma Squad simply stood together under the stars.
