Chapter 38 - Chapter 38 - Housing Assignments

Keira had every intention of stopping by the office to speak to Donovan, but she didn't, as she remembered the families who needed to be moved from the hotel rooms and those who were assigned housing.

'You forgot about them,' Sabelina accused.

'I did,' Keira admitted. 'I think I left the list of families on the table with Antoine.'

Sighing deeply, Keira retraced her steps back to the pack house. Antoine was nowhere to be seen, but her laptop, phone, and papers were stacked neatly next to one another. She grabbed the list and the phone.

'Antoine must have grabbed it for you, knowing that you forgot about the families,' Sabelina interjected smartly.

'Shut it,' Keira said without any heat in her words. 'You know I don't really need to use my phone.'

She quickly dialed the first family's number for the house assignment. The phone rang twice before someone answered.

"Hello?" a feminine voice said.

"Hi, this is Luna Keira," Keira greeted. "May I speak to Taylor?"

"HI Luna!" the woman greeted. "Taylor is not here right now, but is there something I can help you with? I'm his mate, Eliza."

"Hi, Eliza, I was calling to inform you and your family that we have assigned a furnished home for you," Keira explained. "It's ready to move in whenever you want. You just need to stop by the office to pick up the keys."

"Oh my goddess," Eliza gushed. "Thank you, Luna! This is the best news I've heard in a long time. I will let Taylor know."

Keira smiled and said her goodbyes. After the first call, Keira went down to list calling all the families they had assigned housing to.

"Luna," Lorraine greeted as she walked up to Keira. "Do you have a few minutes?"

"Sure, what do you need?" Keira asked, putting down the list.

"I heard from Alpha Donovan that you will be bringing expecting females into the packhouse until the houses are completed," Lorriane replied, looking around the room.

Keira nodded and frowned. Was something the matter?

"Some of the rooms are outdated, and some of the expecting females are high maintenance," Lorriane continued slowly. "I just wanted to warn you."

"Thank you, Lorraine," Keira said. "If they refuse, then those rooms will be reassigned to other families. We want to move them from the hotel to our territory as soon as possible."

Lorraine grinned. "I'll let some of the girls know that we need the rooms to be cleaned out. There are six rooms we can clean up; the rest are being used as storage spaces. Alpha Donovan and you're self don't need to move out. We should have plenty of space."

"Lorraine," Keira stopped her before she hurried off. "Is there someone responsible for the staff members?"

Lorraine shook her head. "No, Luna. We don't really have a structure."

"How do you get paid?" Keira asked. "You do get paid, right?"

Lorraine hesitated and didn't answer. Keira pursed her lips.

'Were they not getting paid for the work they were doing?!' she thought, trying to remain calm.

Keira lowered her voice, "Does Donovan know this?"

"No, Luna," Lorraine whispered. "Since Victoria has been running things, no one has been paid since she took over. I've tracked all the hours and work done by everyone for the last two years. Many of us haven't seen any payment.

"We know that the pack has problems, so we didn't want to complain."

"I see," Keira growled. "Lorriane, put together a list of groups that operate within the pack. Security is its own group, cooks and waiters are another group, you understand?"

"Yes, Luna," Lorraine bowed. "I'll put together the list as soon as possible."

'This is outrageous!' Keria seethed. 'I had a rough idea that this pack needed help, but not paying its members! Was Victoria pocketing the extra money?'

'Are you going to let Donovan know?' Sabelina asked.

'I need to,' Keira said. 'I just, there's a lot we need to take care of. We will have to find a way to get the pack members paid what they are owed.'

Rubbing her forehead, Keira grabbed the list and called the first family on the list of expecting mothers.

'One thing at a time,' Keira chanted to herself as the phone rang.

"Yes?" a woman answered.

"Hi, this is Luna Keira," Keira began.

"It's about time," the woman interrupted. "When am I going to be moved to a house?"

"This is Mrs. Sanders?" Keira asked.

"Who else would it be?" she retorted.

"Mrs. Sanders, you won't be moving to a house any time soon," Keira replied. "We are going to move you to the pack house until the rest of the houses are built."

"Excuse me?!" Mrs. Sanders exclaimed. "I need to be in a house before I give birth."

"That won't be possible," Keira said. "The best we can do is get you out of the hotel room and into the packhouse."

"No," Mrs. Sanders refused. "I won't be moving. I want a house, or we won't move."

"That's fine," Keira said, not going to argue with her. "I will cross off your family name from the list. Thank you for taking my call. Goodbye."

Keira hung up the phone. So this is what Lorraine meant.

Not letting it bother her, Keira continued calling. After Keira was done with her list, she was pleased with the results. Besides Mrs. Sanders and Mrs. Yeagar, who refused to move to the pack house, Mrs. Rayner was more than happy to move to the pack house until a house was ready for her family.

'What about the rest of the families?' Sabelina asked. 'Lorraine said there are six rooms we can probably use. Do you want to keep two rooms open in the event they change their mind?'

'We'll call the rest and then speak to Donovan,' Keira decided.

*

"Thank you, Luna," Mrs. Bailey squealed. "I'd rather be at the pack house than stay at a hotel. I will let my mate know, and as soon as the rooms are ready, we'll move in."

"You're welcome," Keira said. "Have a good night. Goodbye."

'That's the last of them,' Keira thought, rubbing her sore neck.

She looked at the time on her phone; it was almost dinner time. She reached out to Donovan through their bond.

"Donovan, do you have a few minutes?" Keira asked.

"What is it?" Donovan asked.

"The Sanders and Yeagar families refused to move into the pack house; they are demanding houses," Keira explained. "Do you want me to keep the rooms open for them or get two more families moved?"

"Go ahead and move in two more families," Donovan eventually answered, "If they don't want to move, then we can't force them. The more families out of hotel rooms, the better."

"Alright."

Keira dialed the next family on the list. By the time dinner was being served, all the spare rooms at the pack house had been assigned to families. Keira leaned over her to-do list and crossed off the "housing assignment" task from her list.

"What's next?" Keira muttered to herself, glancing at the list. "Donovan needs to review the potential patrol routes and security groups. I need to create the perimeter and have him review it.

"The houses are being built... We don't have to buy furniture since there is still a lot in storage... Lorraine is getting me a list of departments that operate within the pack..."

Keira added a few more things to her list.

"We need to deal with how to pay the members of the packhouse for their work... And figure out what our supplies look like... Maybe also review our budget and expenses... I should also work on a training schedule...

"But I need to assign department heads to help manage those teams... That leads me to choosing an assistant; I can't possibly manage all of this."

Keira leaned back and grabbed her things as the mess hall slowly began to fill with the pack members. She wouldn't be getting any more work done, at least not with the noise.

Keira grabbed her things and headed to the bedroom. There was a chair and a nightstand she could use as a temporary desk. Once she was situated in the bedroom, Keira began her next task.
