Chapter 60 - The Door Between the Past and the Present

Across the ocean, in Los Angeles…

Evelyn sat quietly by the window of her home.

The morning sunlight filled the room, but it did little to lift the heaviness in her heart.

Her youngest son lay on the couch nearby, looking pale and tired.

He had barely spoken since Stephanie left, and even after all these years, he still missed his sister terribly.

"Mom…" he murmured weakly.

Evelyn walked over and gently touched his forehead.

"You need to rest," she said softly.

He looked up at her.

"When is Stephanie coming back?"

Evelyn's heart tightened.

"I don't know yet," she admitted quietly.

Her other children had also grown quieter whenever Stephanie's absence came up. It had been years since she left, but the emptiness she had created in the house had never truly disappeared.

Later that afternoon, when the children had gone to their rooms, Evelyn knelt beside her bed and clasped her hands together.

"God," she whispered softly, "please watch over my daughter wherever she is."

She paused, her eyes filling with tears.

"And please, if there's still a chance for me to make things right, bring her back to me safely."

For a moment, the room was silent.

But deep inside Evelyn's heart, there was a strange feeling she couldn't explain.

Something was coming.

Something big.

And somehow, she felt that the past she had buried for so many years was finally about to return.

Thousands of miles away, a plane prepared for departure.

Stephanie looked out the window as she sat beside Maya and Adrian.

Her heart beat faster as she thought about the place she had not seen in over four years.

Los Angeles was waiting.

And with it…

The truth.

⸻

A few hours later…

A car stopped quietly a short distance away from the small house.

Stephanie stared through the window, her heart beating so fast she could almost hear it.

Los Angeles.

She was finally here.

Beside her, Maya gently squeezed her hand.

"You can do this," she said softly.

Adrian nodded from the other side.

"We'll be right here."

Stephanie looked at them both before taking a deep breath.

"Okay."

The car door opened, and she stepped out slowly.

Behind her, Mr. and Mrs. Larento remained in the car with Adrian and Maya, giving her the space she needed.

Stephanie began walking toward the house.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

Memories flooded her mind.

The small yard.

The familiar door.

The windows she had looked through countless times while growing up.

It had been years since she last stood there, yet everything looked so familiar.

When she finally reached the front door, she hesitated for a moment before knocking.

A few seconds passed.

Footsteps approached from inside.

The door opened.

Evelyn stood there.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Evelyn's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Stephanie…?"

Her voice trembled.

Stephanie stood frozen, staring at the woman she had spent years missing, even when she tried to convince herself otherwise.

"Mom…"

The word barely escaped her lips.

Suddenly, Evelyn rushed forward and pulled her into a tight embrace.

"Oh my God!" she cried. "You're here… you're really here."

She held her daughter as tears streamed down her face.

"Please forgive me," Evelyn whispered desperately. "I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry."

Stephanie's eyes filled with tears.

For years, she had imagined what it would feel like to see her mother again. Now that the moment had finally arrived, she didn't know whether to cry, speak, or simply hold on to her.

Evelyn pulled back slightly, looking into her daughter's face.

"I was wrong," she continued, her voice breaking. "I let my pain destroy the relationship I should have protected the most."

Stephanie swallowed hard.

"It was so difficult for me," Evelyn said, shaking her head. "Every time I looked at you, you looked exactly like your father."

Her voice cracked.

"And every time I saw his face in yours, I remembered everything he did to me. I remembered the pain, the fear, and the terrible mistake I made."

She wiped her tears, but more continued to fall.

"I carried the guilt of knowing I was the one who caused his death, and I hated myself for it."

Stephanie stood silently, taking in her mother's words.

Evelyn looked at her with deep guilt in her eyes.

"I was afraid," she whispered. "Afraid that if you ever knew the truth, you would hate me."

She paused, her voice growing softer.

"But I was wrong to let my past affect the way I treated you. And when you needed me to listen to you, I failed you."

Tears rolled down Stephanie's cheeks.

There were so many things she wanted to say, so many years of hurt she had carried, but standing before her mother again made it difficult to find the right words.

Before she could respond, the sound of small footsteps came running from inside the house.

"Mom!"

Two young boys rushed into the hallway.

They stopped the moment they saw Stephanie standing at the door.

For a second, they simply stared at her.

Then one of them gasped.

"Stephanie!"

They ran straight toward her.

"Sis!"

The boys hugged her tightly, almost knocking her off balance.

"You came back!" one of them exclaimed excitedly. "We missed you so much!"

Stephanie couldn't hold it in anymore.

She broke down crying as she hugged them both.

"I missed you too," she whispered.

Four years had passed, and her little brothers were no longer as small as she remembered them. Yet, as they held on to her, she could still see the little boys she had left behind.

She hugged them even tighter, wishing she could make up for all the years she had missed.

Inside the house, another figure stepped into the hallway.

Her stepfather.

The moment he saw Stephanie, his expression changed.

Shock.

Then uneasiness.

She looked different now.

Older.

Stronger.

More confident.

A small knot of fear formed in his chest.

What if she told her mother what he had tried to do to her?

What if Stephanie finally spoke up about everything she had endured before leaving the house?

He had hoped never to face that day.

But now, she was standing right in front of him.

And for the first time, he wasn't sure what she would do next.

Outside the house, the black car remained parked quietly down the street.

Inside, Maya leaned forward anxiously.

"Should we go now?" she whispered.

Adrian shook his head slightly.

"Not yet."

He kept his eyes on Stephanie.

"This moment belongs to her."

Mr. Larento nodded in agreement.

They understood how much this reunion meant to Stephanie, and they wanted to give her the chance to face her family on her own terms.

But he also knew that sooner or later, they would have to step forward.

Because the past Evelyn had tried so hard to hide, the pain Stephanie had carried for years, and the truth her stepfather feared would finally have to be confronted.

And this time…

Stephanie wasn't going to run away.
