Chapter 10 - A Road With No Direction

The morning air was cold.

Stephanie pulled her small bag closer to her shoulder as she walked slowly along the quiet road. The sun was only beginning to rise, painting the sky with soft shades of orange and pale blue.

Everything felt strange.

For the first time in seventeen years, she had left that house behind.

No shouting.

No cold silence.

No heavy feeling pressing on her chest.

Yet the freedom didn't feel the way she imagined.

It felt lonely.

Stephanie kept walking, her shoes brushing softly against the dusty road. A few cars passed by occasionally, but no one paid attention to the girl walking alone.

She didn't even know where she was going.

All she knew was that she couldn't go back.

Her mind replayed the events of yesterday again and again.

Her birthday.

The silence.

Her mother's cold voice.

Her stepfather's cruel laughter.

Stephanie felt her throat tighten, but she forced herself to keep moving.

"I'm not going back," she whispered quietly to herself.

After a while, she stopped walking and sat down on a low concrete block near the roadside.

Her legs were already tired.

The world suddenly felt much bigger than she had ever imagined.

She opened her bag slowly and took out the small notebook she had hidden inside.

Carefully, she pulled out the photograph.

The old picture was slightly bent at the edges now, but the faces were still clear.

Her mother looked younger in it.

And beside her stood the man she had never met.

Her father.

Stephanie studied his face again.

The same eyes.

The same shape of nose.

Even the way he smiled felt familiar somehow.

"You're the only person I have left," she murmured softly.

A small tear slid down her cheek.

Maybe he was a bad man.

Maybe her mother hated him for a reason.

But right now, he was the only hope she had.

Stephanie wiped her eyes and stood up again.

She didn't know where to find him.

She didn't know if he was alive.

She didn't even know what kind of man he really was.

But one thing had already settled in her heart.

If there was anyone in this world who might understand her…

It would be him.

Clutching the photograph tightly in her hand, Stephanie stepped back onto the road.

And continued walking,

toward a future she couldn't yet see.
