Chapter 45 - Chapter 48: The Blink, the Rot, and the Ascending Light

Chapter 48: The Blink, the Rot, and the Ascending Light

The subterranean laboratory beneath Jaku General Hospital had become a crucible of pure, unrelenting kinetic violence.

Tomura Shigaraki was fighting a war on two fronts. Externally, he was locked in a brutal, hypersonic melee against the most terrifyingly synchronized strike team on the planet. Internally, his own body was staging a violent rebellion. The seventy-five percent integration of the original All For One Quirk factor was tearing his cellular structure apart. Deep, jagged fissures split the flesh of his chest and arms, exposing the raw, bio-engineered muscle beneath, only for his hyper-accelerated base regeneration to violently stitch the wounds back together in a gruesome, endless cycle of tearing and healing.

Yet, even without access to his Quirks, the sheer base physical specifications Dr. Ujiko had grafted onto him were apocalyptic.

CLANG!

Kenji's silver-plated fists met Shigaraki's forearm. The shockwave shattered the remaining glass vats in the room. Kenji, utilizing the infinite density of Knight's Vow, was an immovable object, but Shigaraki's raw, monstrous strength was pushing the Quirkless Knight backward, his armored boots carving deep trenches into the reinforced concrete floor.

"You're heavy, silver boy," Shigaraki hissed, a manic, bloody grin stretching across his face. "But you're just a shield!"

Shigaraki twisted his torso, using the leverage to violently throw Kenji aside. He didn't miss a beat. As Giulio Gandini lunged forward, his Crimson Arsenal plasma broadsword humming with lethal intent, Shigaraki simply caught the flat side of the crackling red blade with his bare hands. The plasma seared his flesh, the smell of burning meat filling the air, but Shigaraki just laughed, shattering the energy construct with a brutal squeeze.

"Hawks! Cover him!" Aizawa roared from the back of the room.

A barrage of golden-red Oculus Plumes swarmed Shigaraki, slicing microscopic cuts across his tendons to slow him down. Simultaneously, the one-armed Armored All Might fired his heavy-duty thrusters, slamming a mechanized Detroit Smash directly into Shigaraki's ribs, finally forcing the villain to stagger backward.

Aizawa stood ten yards away, his newly healed eyes glowing with an intense, burning crimson light. His hair floated wildly around his face. Erasure was the only thing keeping the world from ending.

But Shigaraki was a tactical genius forged by the Emperor of the Underworld. He realized he didn't need to overpower the Vanguard. He just needed to blind the teacher.

Shigaraki slammed his foot into the ruined concrete floor. He didn't kick the heroes; he kicked the shattered debris of the supercomputers and the heavy steel grating.

A hurricane of jagged metal, pulverized concrete, and bio-luminescent fluid erupted into the air, creating a massive, chaotic smokescreen of high-velocity shrapnel aimed directly at Shota Aizawa.

"Aizawa!" Nocturne shouted, raising his hand to deploy a localized Aegis Pulse shield.

But the dust was too thick. The shrapnel was too fast. A tiny, microscopic piece of shattered concrete bypassed the forming shield and struck Aizawa directly in the right eye.

The pain was sharp and instantaneous. It was an involuntary, biological reflex honed by millions of years of human evolution.

Shota Aizawa blinked.

It was less than a tenth of a second. A single, microscopic flutter of the eyelids. But against a god of destruction, a fraction of a second is an eternity.

The suppression of Erasure snapped.

The air in the subterranean laboratory didn't just drop in temperature; it felt as though all the oxygen had been violently sucked into a vacuum. The heavy, suffocating aura of a thousand stolen Quirks, spearheaded by the awakened, apocalyptic power of Decay, instantly flooded the room.

Tomura Shigaraki's pupilless white eyes flared with a terrifying, unadulterated malice. The fissures on his body violently ripped open, black blood spraying into the air as the dam holding back his Quirks completely shattered.

"I win," Shigaraki whispered.

He didn't need to touch the floor. The Decay erupted from his body as an omnidirectional, cascading wave of gray death. Simultaneously, his back tore open, and dozens of massive, jagged black-and-red tendrils—the lethal Rivet Stab Quirk—shot outward at supersonic speeds, aimed directly at the hearts of the Vanguard.

"Sovereign!" Giulio yelled, pushing Kenji out of the path of a lethal black tendril.

Rei Arata did not flinch. His Emotion Sight had predicted the biological inevitability of the blink.

The Winged Sovereign threw his arms wide open, his kaleidoscopic eyes burning with absolute, god-tier authority. He commanded the digital, spatial, and conceptual grid of the planet.

"ASTRAL NEXUS: ABSOLUTE DOMAIN!"

The silvery-blue, hard-light data streams of the Sanctuary dimension violently exploded outward from Nocturne's chest. The dimensional barrier didn't just form a dome; it rapidly expanded to envelop the Vanguard, Aizawa, Hawks, and All Might, creating an isolated pocket of perfect reality within the collapsing laboratory.

The gray wave of decay slammed into the shimmering, golden-blue dimensional wall.

The collision was not physical. It was conceptual warfare on a scale never before seen.

Shigaraki's awakened Decay attempted to rot the very fabric of the spatial dimension. The hard-light data streams forming the shield began to turn gray, the digital code literally turning to ash as the decay chewed through the Sovereign's domain.

Inside the domain, Rei gritted his teeth, blood dripping from his nose beneath the silver moth-mask. His civilian DNA screamed as he rapidly, recursively rewrote the spatial algorithm of the Astral Nexus in real-time, infinitely generating new dimensional barriers to replace the ones Shigaraki was decaying. It was an apocalyptic tug-of-war between the erasure of matter and the infinite creation of space.

"He's decaying the dimension itself!" Rin screamed over the comms, her own psychic feedback spiking as she monitored the grid from the Sanctuary. "Sovereign, the structural integrity of the hospital above you is gone! The bedrock is turning to dust! The ceiling is coming down!"

Shigaraki's decay hadn't just hit the Sovereign's shield; it had expanded outward and upward. The massive support columns of the subterranean cavern, the thick lead lining, the sub-basements of Jaku Hospital, and the earth itself were vaporizing into a massive sinkhole.

Millions of tons of concrete, steel, and earth began to collapse directly toward the subterranean lab.

"We are trapped!" Armored All Might roared over the deafening sound of the collapsing earth, his mechanical servos whining as he looked up at the apocalyptic cave-in. "The shield cannot hold the weight of an entire hospital and the decay simultaneously!"

Aizawa, his eye bleeding, desperately tried to pry his eyelids open to lock onto Shigaraki through the swirling gray dust and the shimmering dimensional wall. "I can't see him! The dust is too thick! I can't erase him!"

"We need a vertical extraction!" Hawks yelled, his Oculus Plumes frantically mapping the collapsing debris above them. "GateL0ck! Can you open a portal through falling rubble?!"

"Spatial coordinates are shifting too fast!" Rin panicked over the comms. "If I open a portal and a piece of concrete falls through the event horizon, it will sever the connection!"

"I will clear the sky!"

A brilliant, blinding flash of golden laser light erupted from the ceiling of the collapsing cavern.

High above them, diving headfirst through the falling, decaying wreckage of Jaku Hospital, was Yuga Aoyama.

He didn't wear a dark cloak today. He was clad in his shining, sparkling hero armor, his Prismatic Flight burning with the intensity of a falling star. The flamboyant boy who had once trembled in the shadows of the USJ was plunging directly into the mouth of hell.

Aoyama fired a continuous, sweeping barrage of hyper-concentrated golden lasers from his palms and navel. The Navel Laser didn't just break the falling concrete; it completely vaporized the debris directly above the Vanguard, carving a perfect, temporary, and debris-free vertical tunnel through the collapsing earth.

"Aoyama?!" Midoriya's voice screamed over the comm frequency from the Gunga Villa battlefield, having heard the comms. "Get out of there! The decay!"

"A knight never abandons his King!" Aoyama shouted back, his golden aura flaring as he dropped into the Sovereign's Astral Nexus domain.

Aoyama didn't stop to admire the shield. He glided directly to Shota Aizawa. He grabbed the Underground Hero tightly by the harness of his tactical vest.

"Eraserhead! Keep your eyes open!" Aoyama ordered, his voice devoid of any fear. "I am going to fly you backward! Keep your line of sight on the monster!"

"Do it!" Aizawa roared, manually holding his bleeding right eye open with his fingers, ignoring the agonizing pain.

Aoyama ignited his Prismatic Flight boots to maximum thrust. He shot straight up, carrying Aizawa vertically into the laser-carved tunnel through the collapsing earth.

"Vanguard! Ascend!" Nocturne commanded.

The Winged Sovereign did not drop the shield. He maintained the Astral Nexus barrier, but he began to levitate, pushing the entire massive, protective dome upward through the falling debris like a cosmic elevator.

Hawks swooped down, grabbing the heavy, one-armed chassis of Armored All Might, his red wings beating furiously as he hauled the mechanized behemoth into the air. Giulio and Kenji leaped, using the floating, frictionless Oculus Plumes Hawks left behind as temporary stepping stones, ascending rapidly behind Aoyama and Aizawa.

Down in the decaying cavern, Tomura Shigaraki looked up through the swirling gray dust. He saw the Vanguard retreating. He saw Aizawa, flying backward, desperately trying to lock eyes with him.

"You don't get to leave the stage!" Shigaraki screamed, his voice distorting into a demonic, multi-layered roar as the vestiges of All For One echoed in his throat.

Shigaraki launched himself upward, using a combination of Air Walk and explosive kinetic boosters to propel himself into the vertical tunnel. He was a terrifying, ascending nightmare of ripping flesh, black blood, and expanding gray dust.

Dozens of Rivet Stab tendrils shot upward, aimed directly at Aoyama's golden light.

CLANG!

Giulio Gandini, ascending via the feathers, swung his cybernetic arm backward. His plasma broadsword deflected three black tendrils, the kinetic force nearly knocking the swordsman off his precarious footing.

"He is pursuing!" Giulio yelled, his golden eye tracking the ascending villain.

Kenji dropped straight down, sacrificing his own ascent. He activated Knight's Vow, turning himself into a silver meteor falling directly toward Shigaraki.

"Get back down there!" Kenji roared, throwing a devastating, infinite-density punch at the villain's ascending face.

Shigaraki didn't dodge. He caught Kenji's fist with his own, the collision creating a massive shockwave that further destabilized the collapsing tunnel. Shigaraki's arm bones shattered completely, but the hyper-regeneration instantly snapped them back into place.

"Annoying bug!" Shigaraki snarled, unleashing a localized wave of Decay from his other hand, aimed directly at Kenji's chest.

Before the decay could touch the silver armor, a massive, violet butterfly made of solid cosmic energy slammed into Shigaraki's side.

Nocturne had ascended perfectly to intercept. The Sovereign didn't just block; he unleashed a devastating, concussive blast of pure Prismatic Flight energy infused with Knight's Vow density. The strike hit Shigaraki with the force of a falling asteroid, violently knocking the villain off his ascending trajectory and sending him crashing into the decaying walls of the vertical shaft.

Kenji used the recoil to launch himself back upward, caught effortlessly by one of Hawks's feathers.

Aoyama continued to fly backward, dodging massive chunks of falling rebar and concrete. Aizawa stared downward through the dust. The moment Shigaraki crashed into the wall, the villain's silhouette became visible through the gray storm.

Aizawa's crimson eyes locked onto the Demon King.

Erasure.

The massive, expanding wave of gray decay instantly halted. The black Rivet Stab tendrils went limp and dissolved into the air.

Shigaraki, pinned against the wall of the collapsing shaft, felt the suffocating, heavy silence of his Quirks vanishing once again. He looked up at the ascending, golden light of Aoyama carrying the teacher.

But as Shigaraki prepared to use his raw physical strength to jump again, his own body betrayed him.

The seventy-five percent integration limit had been breached. By forcibly opening the floodgates of All For One and unleashing the massive decay wave, Shigaraki had fundamentally overloaded his bio-engineered cellular structure.

His flesh didn't just fissure; it began to violently rupture.

Massive, gaping wounds tore open across his chest, shoulders, and face. Black blood erupted like geysers. His hyper-regeneration, now erased by Aizawa, could not stitch the wounds back together. The sheer, apocalyptic power of the crown was tearing the King apart from the inside out.

Shigaraki screamed—an agonizing, horrific sound of pure, biological failure. He clutched his own face, his white hair plastered to his skull with blood. He realized with terrifying clarity that if he continued the pursuit without his regeneration Quirk active, his body would literally explode into pieces before he reached the surface.

He was incomplete. He needed to heal. He needed to retreat.

"Sovereign!" Shigaraki's broken, bloody voice echoed up the collapsing shaft, filled with a hatred that transcended reality itself. "This isn't a victory! You're just delaying the rot! I will heal! And when I return... I won't just decay your cities! I will decay your starlit sky!"

With a final, desperate burst of raw physical strength, Shigaraki violently kicked off the wall, plunging downward, diving back into the deepest, un-collapsed subterranean depths of the Nomu network to escape.

The Vanguard did not pursue. The extraction was paramount.

Aoyama's golden lasers carved the final few feet of bedrock.

With a blinding flash of light, Aoyama and Aizawa burst through the surface, flying out into the torrential rain of Jaku City. Hawks followed, carrying the heavy Armored All Might, while Giulio and Kenji vaulted out of the crater, landing safely on the wet asphalt.

A second later, the Winged Sovereign emerged, his black cloak billowing in the storm, the Astral Nexus domain gracefully folding back into his chest.

The Vanguard turned and looked back.

Where Jaku General Hospital had stood just minutes ago, there was now a massive, two-mile-wide crater of perfectly smooth, gray dust. A third of the city had been completely erased from the map in the few seconds Shigaraki's decay had been unleashed.

The rain poured down into the abyss, turning the gray dust into a thick, toxic sludge.

Aizawa collapsed onto his knees, covering his bleeding right eye, panting heavily. Aoyama landed softly beside him, the golden aura fading, his chest heaving from the immense exertion.

Hawks set Armored All Might down. The mechanized suit hissed, venting steam, as Toshinori looked at the apocalyptic crater. The Symbol of Peace had seen destruction, but he had never seen an entire city block simply cease to exist.

"He escaped," Kenji said, his silver armor fading as he stared into the void. "If Aizawa hadn't locked eyes with him during the ascent... we would all be dust right now."

Giulio sheathed his plasma broadsword, his golden eye solemn. "The Demon King is awake, but he is broken. He requires time to repair his vessel. We have won the battle, Vanguard. But the war has officially mutated."

Rei Arata walked to the edge of the crater. His silver moth-mask was streaked with rain. His Emotion Sight could no longer feel Shigaraki's presence; the villain had buried himself too deeply into the earth to track.

The Sovereign looked down at his own gloved hands. He had pushed his conceptual domain to the absolute brink, but even the Astral Nexus had struggled to contain the raw, unadulterated erasure of the fully awakened Decay.

"We struck the King, but we did not claim the crown," Nocturne's dual-toned voice hummed, carrying a heavy, chilling realism over the sound of the storm. He turned to face his battered, exhausted, but surviving Swarm and their Pro Hero allies.

"The board is broken. Hero Society as it was known is buried in that crater," Nocturne declared, looking at the rain-swept ruins of Jaku City. "Shigaraki will heal. He will amass whatever villains survived today, and he will march on the Sanctuary. Prepare yourselves, Vanguard. The shadows are our only shield now."
