Chapter 49 - Golden Hour

The air inside the restaurant had grown thick with an unspoken weight, so the transition back to the Mercedes Sprinter felt like a necessary breath of fresh air.

As the van hummed toward the coast, the sky began its slow transformation, bleeding from a pale blue into bruised violets and deep, liquid golds.

The Sprinter eventually pulled to a stop near a secluded stretch of white sand, far from the bustling crowds of the main tourist beaches.

The door slid open, and the roar of the ocean softer here than at the cliffs—greeted them with a rhythmic, soothing hiss.

Hajun was the first one out, his small feet sinking into the cool sand as he looked out at the vast, shimmering expanse of the Jeju Sea.

"Uncle... the sun is falling into the water," he whispered, pointing a small finger at the glowing orb touching the horizon.

Jin-woo stepped out behind him, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking less like a CEO and more like a man finally finding a moment of peace.

He didn't say anything, but he stood close to Eun-soo, their shoulders nearly brushing as they began to walk slowly along the shoreline.

Eun-soo had taken off her shoes, carrying them in one hand while the other held the hem of her tunic to keep it from the damp sand.

Every time a rogue wave washed over her feet, she let out a small, startled laugh that made Jin-woo's gaze drift toward her instinctively.

He was still thinking about the hallway, and the hairband, and the way her skin had felt like warm silk under his fingertips just an hour ago.

The parents followed a comfortable distance behind, Young-sook leaning into Jin-ho's side as they watched the three figures ahead of them.

"They look like they belong there," Jin-ho remarked quietly, his voice carrying over the wind. "Like a puzzle piece that finally clicked."

Up ahead, Hajun found a particularly smooth seashell and ran back to show it to Eun-soo, his face glowing in the golden hour light.

Eun-soo knelt down in the sand, oblivious to the hem of her cream trousers getting wet, to inspect the treasure with the same gravity she gave his math problems.

Jin-woo stood over them, his shadow long and dark against the gold sand, acting as a silent sentinel for this small, fragile world they had built.

As the sun finally dipped below the horizon, leaving a trail of fire across the water, the temperature dropped, and a sharp chill swept in from the sea.

Without a word, Jin-woo reached out and placed a hand on Eun-soo's shoulder not to tie her hair this time, but to guide her back toward the warmth of the van.

"It's getting cold," he said, his voice steadying after the turbulence of the restaurant. "We should get you and Hajun inside."

Eun-soo looked up at him, the orange light reflecting in her dark eyes, and for a second, the "Teacher" and the "CEO" were gone leaving only two people standing on the edge of the world.

"Thank you, Jin-woo-ssi," she said softly, using his name without a title for the very first time.

Jin-woo's hand tightened slightly on her shoulder before he let go, the ghost of her name on his lips as they walked back toward the waiting lights of the Sprinter.
